Are all JRPG bats the Worst?

FelixSH

(He/Him)
Are there any that are fine?* Any that are not "Damn, more of these jerks, incapable of killing me, but trying their best to kill my patience?"

Or maybe the more relevant question: Which are the worst? Pokemons Zubat? The bats in FF IV?

Don't even TRY to defend these horrible, horrible creatures.

Real-life bats are likely totally cool and chill. It's a crime, how they are always portrayed as the most obnoxious of creatures in JRPGs.

JRPG bats are pretty bad but what about bats in platformers?
Now that you mention it, isn't it weird that some 250-pound slab of beef with a whip gets thrown in the opposite direction when a 3-pound bat flies into him mid-jump? That's like if you got hit by a car and it bounced off you.

Zubat in Pokemon Let’s Go! Pikachu is the only shiny ‘mon I’ve ever caught/had. I have respect for that, although of course they just stayed in a box because even fancy and only among 151 critters, not a top six choice.

The bats in World of Final Fantasy can be promoted into vampires, and the vampires kind of look like Power Rangers bad guys.

This is as close to Good as Video Game Bats get

Bats in Final Fantasy have about the same encounter rate as Zubats, but Zubats will, at worst, make your pet hit itself in its confusion, while bats in FF spend ten minutes draining your blood every turn they get. Clearly they're the bats of choice for a chaos god.

I just remembered that there are the bat "NPCs" in Final Fantasy 1 but they tend to get in your way while you're trying to get through the Earth Cave or into the final dungeon. So I guess that might be as non-annoying as they can get.

The bats in the Temple of Fiends are the original Sky Warriors, thus transformed by... Tiamat, IIRC? But yeah, I think I remember other NPC bats blocking your way elsewhere.

And the Earth Cave is absolutely not the kind of place where you want to be taking any more steps than are strictly necessary

The wiki says that the Sky Warriors were "cursed by the Fiends" and I can't remember the in-game text so I don't know for sure.

Perhaps the same could be said of all religions every dungeon in FF1.

Zubats were the only bats on Talking Time's Top 60 Video Game Enemies, so clearly they were notable!

That’s the popular line, but can you prove it?

Well, take a look at this excellent li'l batski:

latest

Note that it only has four limbs, rather than six. Note that its wings (of which it has only two, not four) have developed from its forelimbs, rather than being a whole separate dealio. Note that it has two camera-type eyes, rather than a whole bunch of compound eyes. Finally, note that its skeleton is inside the ball of fluff that is its body rather than on the outside. To me, all of that says "tetrapod" rather than "insect."

Bats backwards is Stab. That is why JRPG bats wield swords. Or, alternatively, [insert obscure Pokemon joke here]

Consider:
Bats typically eat nocturnal insects. And furthermore, as proven in all medical textbooks, you are what you eat.

Therefor, bats are insects. And Insects are Bugs
