Alright, sorry.

Unrelatedly, are there any fan projects to make a FF3 remake that's more true to the original than the DS version?

Not that I'm personally aware of. The closest I've seen is the original Wonder Swan Color take on the remake that never saw the light of day even in Japan.

The Invincible might be the best airship Square's ever made. Okay, the ships in VI were pretty badass, sure. I love how this calls to mind the original airship while being so damned big.

FF3 has the best airships in the series, no contest. I love the little animation where the Enterprise's sails come down and the props go up, and the Invincible is the only ship with an attack outside of SaGa/FF Legend 3.

It also has the worst airships in the series too, like that one that can't fly over mountains and explodes when it touches a boulder!

Also, FFIII's the only RPG I can think of that has a field map obstacle that'll instakill you if you try crossing it without the proper MacGuffins, even on safe means of travel. Zande could probably keep your guys out for good if he had made more than four pairs of those Game Over statues.

Or kept the fangs in the Crystal Tower. But then the WoL would have drilled in or something.

Actually, that would have been much, much better. "The Excavator lies on the southern continent! Go!"

9/20/2010 - Now With 95% Less Splitting!

Previously our warriors thought about venturing into the Cave of Darkness to confront the second splitting dungeon. But this isn't where we begin our journey!

Southwest of Salonia is the town of Fargabaad that can only be reached using the airship jump.

This is also where we can purchase the swords for the M.Knight class. Using these we can prevent the splitting monsters from splitting altogether.

Might as well be thorough and switch everyone but Katie to M.Knight to prevent unnecessary splitting. It did take a bit of grinding to get the gear, but it'll be worth it in the end.

After a quick nap aboard the ship we're ready to make the trek down toward the final fang.

Just in case you miss Fargabaad entirely there's an NPC here that will give you a dark sword for free. Kotetsu is actually stronger than the ones from the store, so we toss it on SL and continue to push forward.

Monsters in this dungeon are pretty much the same set from the previous splitting dungeon.

The cave of darkness is comprised of a series of secret passageways and dead ends that is really hard to convey in a static image LP. Much of the time spent in this dungeon was in seemingly solid walls like this third image here.

One of the more notable chests contained a Genji Glove which goes on SL since he's at the head of the party.

It really is quite a maze down here.

Another dark sword, Kiku, is hidden in the walls of B5F.

Really just floors and floors of stuff like this...

Just in case you were wondering what kind of damage these sword do to the splitting monsters. And remember, this was with the weaker set of swords that I bought from the shop.

There's a Genji helmet just to the right of the B7F entrance.

I don't know about anyone else, but I'm kind of sick of walking through walls.

B8F has the Genji armor, completing the set for SL.

Finally we find ourselves at the Earth Fang. I guess this one will be easy; doesn't seem like anyone is around to guard it.

Not so lucky. Hekaton is guarding the fang, though there's nothing really notable about him. He's fairly resistant to physical attacks compared to the monsters of this dungeon, but he doesn't do a whole lot outside of hitting one person per round with a physical attack as well. This is just a war of attrition that I will come out ahead of thanks to Katie's white magic.

After 3 or 4 rounds of wailing on him Hekaton falls and we're the proud new owners of an Earth Fang. Time to head back to Dorga's house to report our victory!

A quick cast of exit and we're back to the surface.

And that's where I'll end it for today.

Next time: Betrayal?!

...Did you seriously get all three pieces of the Genji Armor there?

...I'm not actually sure if that's still in the DS version or not.

That is such a terrible dungeon.
It ranks with the dungeons from FFII and FFVIII's "same screen over and over" dungeon.

You can't help but love FF3s gimmick dungeons.

Well... not "love", but some other strong emotion.

Guh, the moment when the novelty of using 2d games to obscure chests and cover paths of movement became so over-loved that it became a dungeon in-and-of itself. I like tot hink of the horrible world where moderation didn't follow, and we instead had a dungeon consisting of nothing but wall tiles. Also, am I the only one that thought "Metroid RPG" at some of those screens?

Monster.

Closets.

Even in the DoS version, which I kinda like, the dungeons are terrible. A row of doors, one with an exit, NONE with a treasure, all with a fight. Terrible.

Also, the magic system is still broken. You get fucking ULTIMA near endgame ... but then you have to level it up to make it worth a damn? And it has some moon logic way of calculating damage which means you have to grind up every magic (I think). WTF?

If someone wanted to make a not-awful version of that game, it would need a simplified leveling. Attack raises attack. Magic raises magic. screw the separate weapons (okay, maybe split them into thee classes?) and separate magics (again, maybe split them up white/black, but not individual).

And redesign the dungeons.

/rant.

Ultima's damage calculations are based on how much you've mastered the other magic on your character.

In other words, to get it to full, you need a character to learn as many spells possible, master them all, then master Ultima.

And I think you need high Spirit as well.

Yeah, just go with Flare. Or with just mashing attack.

And I think the game would be a lot better if they significantly reduced the amount of XP you need to increase each stat.

Alternatively, make it so you can gain more than one level per battle.

Except, in DoS, the random encounters aren't generally that hard.

On the other hand, if you take the time to level it up, it's fucking kick-ass. It's like the Magikarp of spells.

I'll agree with the point on magic, but weapon leveling isn't that bad, since most of the weapon classes have an ultimate weapon (except staffs, but if you level up staffs, you have nobody but yourself to blame).

Alright, fine, I get it.

Magikarp again.

Except Flare doesn't even have the epic damage at full level that Ultima does. Your statement on mashing Attack is true, though.

Like in the remakes?

Hey, take it to the "not worth its own thread thread" if you're going to talk about bad Final Fantasy games.

Ah, but this is how we pass the time between updates.

Which is to say, we really like your LP.

But I'll let it die.

(Most of this is just repeated from the Spite Club, anyhow)
