Create The Ultimate Monsters! Let’s Play Dragon Warrior Monsters
I've switched over to a video LP!
Episode 1 Episode 2 Episode 3 Episode 4 Episode 5 Episode 6 Hey everybody, and welcome to Let's play Dragon Warrior Monsters. This is one of my favorite games from my childhood. I spent countless trips down to Tuscon playing this on my gameboy color. Hopefully this will be a fun ride for all of us. I am open to any commentary on the format/content of the LP. If you guys want more pictures I can oblige, if you guys want more battle scenes no problem. I'm even thinking of doing the boss fights as videos so people can see how the combat actually plays out. Your feedback is greatly appreciated! Dragon Warrior Monsters is one of the dozens of pokemon clones that came out at the end of the ‘90s, but unlike most of them Dragon Warrior Monsters tweaked the gameplay enough to, in my opinion, improve the game. The biggest difference is the party system. In pokemon you have six “party members,” but only one can fight at a time; Dragon Warrior Monsters harkens back to its root by giving the player a three member party who all fight at the same time. Next up on the differences is the combat. Dragon Warrior Monsters uses the traditional RPG attack/magic/defend combat system. There are not weaknesses/resistances but some monsters have inherent resistances which reduce damage they take from certain attacks or make them completely immune to them, goldslime being the best example of this. Alone this sounds like your average RPG, but the real flavor for Dragon Warrior Monsters is collecting the monsters. As the player you get fight with all the monsters that you previously murdered in the series, even the end-bosses. Almost every monster you meet in the wild you can get to join your team. The method though is a little unfortunate. During the battle you throw food at them and after you beat them there is a chance, based on how much and what type of food you throw at them, that they will join you. There have been many times that I have loaded a certain rare beast full of sirloins, the best meat, only to see them walk away after the battle. I will probably run into a few instances of this so I will try to convey the dismay as best I can for all of you readers out there. Now Dragon Warrior Monsters has a lot of monsters in it, 250 to be exact, and cramming all of them into dungeons would be nearly impossible. So, Dragon Warrior Monster has a ridiculously complex breeding system. The monsters we’ll be finding in the traveler’s gates, the dungeons, are only the ingredients. Almost all of the best monsters in the game can ONLY obtained through lots and lots of breeding. For example here is what it takes to breed a gold slime 2x plant family member 2x devil family member 2x dragon family member 5x slime 1x healer 1x spotking Normally though, it won’t require this many monsters for stuff. I will go into more depth once we get to the point where we will be doing it a lot. Just keep in mind that levels aren’t nearly as important as skills and stats. (here is the breeding guide I will be using to help with a few things) Okay so that’s enough blabbering, let’s get to the game! (for best effect loop this or this through the entire LP) The game opens up with our protagonist chasing after his sister. for bed! Did you forget what Mom and Dad told us? Stay up too late and you will be carried away by monsters. What? You wanna meet monsters? don’t be silly, go to bed! Well after getting a good chewing out by our sister we decide to do what every kid would do; pretend to go to. Well seems the sis’ is out cold. Our hero gets hungry and decides to check out the pantry for some cookies... We get about two steps in and the drawer(?) opens mysteriously. A quick aside about this room: I don’t get what it is suppose to be? Is it the kitchen? Why do they have a dresser in the corner randomly? I think it was just lazy design because if you look at this room and the previous, the bookshelves and one of the dressers is in the exact same place. Anyhow... Hm, you don’t look like her. Milayou’s a girl. Your name is Terry? You’re not the one. I’m Warubou from the Kingdom of GreatLog. Don’t you forget it! Out of the drawer pops a grey monster (honestly I don’t know what he is) who comes and yells at us too! Terry is not having a good night! Like any good villain, he kicks us out of the way and proceeds to steal out sister. They escape through the still open drawer and it closes behind them. Terry recovers from his shock and remembers how hungry he is. He gets about half way across the room when the drawer/portal opens up again... happened? Where is Milayou? Out pops another monster(?) this one is white and blue though. don’t you? Where is Milayou? Taken away!? Oh no, I was too late! Warubou? I’m not Warubou. I am Watabou. What you wanna know where your sister is? Well, follow me. Maybe you can find her. I hope you’re a skilled master? You don’t understand what I’m talking about? You’ll find out if you follow me. He notices Terry finally and frantically asks Terry where our sister went. Why do all these strange things what to steal Terry’s sister? First Watabou goes back through the portal... And then Terry follows him. Last edited by Mr. J; 06-30-2010 at 06:24 PM. |

After a blur/fade-out Terry finds himself in a strange shrine surrounded by roots. You must have had a long trip here. What? You don’t know where you are? You’re in the kingdom of GreatTree. Watabou brought you here. Let’s get going. We have to visit the castle to pay our respects to the king. A strange man in grey greets Terry and beckons Terry to follow him. At this point Terry is beginning to wonder if all he is going to do for the rest of his life is have people show up and boss him around. He takes Terry through two strange tiled rooms to a staircase (not shown: the staircase). a big tree. We are at the bottom. The castle is at the top. Terry emerges from what was apparently a subterranean chamber, explains the roots, to the base of a tree. The man explains to Terry that the Kingdom of GreatTree is *gasp* a tree. Watabou brought here? Strange Man: Yes indeed, I am taking him to see the King. Knight: Good luck at the Starry Night Tournament! Terry goes up the stairs to the left and is greeted by a knight from the arena, that hole in the wall. He says something about a tournament? Terry begins to wonder what he’s getting into. Terry reaches the top of the tree and heads into to meet with this King. Are you the new master? His majesty has a favor to ask you. Please comply with his request! He is met by a strangely dressed man who claims to be the minister for the kingdom. More ordering around etc. kingdom. Identify yourself, my child. Terry is greeted by the king and his two jesters, they are cut off by the text box here but they are the two guys to the king’s right and left. Terry is asked to identify himself and is suddenly struck by amnesia! What shall we call our hero? I’m leaving it open to anything but it can only be a maximum of 5 letters. The letters in the screenshot are what you can use. I will leave this open until next Sunday as I am going to Texas next week and won’t have time to do the next update. If you are feeling really adventurous I could also use the names for a dracky, healer and anteater monster. |

In my infinite wisdom, its 1:45 in the morning here >.<, I forgot to mention how I wanted to do the party. There are three slots available so I figure I will leave two of them up to the masses and I'll fill one of them to make sure the LP actually gets through the traveler's gates in good shape. Breeding will be dealt with once we get there and will depend upon how the party system goes. Right now I want to leave all the breeding up to people to get the authentic experience out of this. I got almost 3/4 of the way through my game by just randomly breeding stuff together. I had an ungodly powerful picky, that was hilarious to watch.

I like 'Wumpy'
'Wumpy' is a good name for the protagonist of a Pokemon-based Dragon Quest game. |

Yay! I can hardly wait. Maybe I'll try playing this on my DS again.
"Mr." is an okay name for the hero, as it leads to things like 'Thanks for saving the kingdom Mr.'. "You", "Him", "Guy", "Persn", "Genki", and "BOSS" are all good alternatives. I guess "Percy" would be okay too, but that would be a better name for your healer. Especially if Terry was named Boss. |

I really love this screenshot! Also: I think I played this like 4 years ago for 10 minutes. It looks good!

I'm sure it's common knowledge at this point, but I just wanted to say that "Milayou" from this game is supposed to be Muriel from Dragon Quest 6. Terry is also an important character in that game as well. Also, Kiefer from Dragon Quest 7 also got the same treatment in Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Heart.
I just thought this was an interesting bit of trivia. Look forward to reading this LP Mr.J! |

Man, I need to go back and play some DQ games.

I am fairly illiterate as far as DQ/DW games go so people will have to fill me in on the translational errors. I know that there are a whole bunch of them in the game, but I don't know the exact ones. We'll becoming up on a good example in episode 3.
Edit the first few hours don't really do justice to the game. It isn't until you get about halfway through the traveler's gates and you get access to most of what you'll need for breeding. |

Now don't come to a consensus just yet guys >.< I'm gonna be away for a week. If everyone seems happy with Texas I might be able to do a quick update on the first traveler's gate.

Option 2: Waiting until next Sunday for the first real gameplay and instead doing a mechanics piece.
-Update- Unfortunately I don't have quite enough time to do another update before I go. So we will return to our regularly scheduled programing Sunday March 7th. We'll delve head long into our first travelers gate, meet our first monster, proceed to abandon said monster on top of a giant tree city, get some new monsters, talk about a whole bunch of mechanics, complain about poor design and finally we'll kick F class' butt. It's gonna be fun so hang on for the ride Last edited by Mr. J; 03-07-2010 at 09:45 PM. |

Oh wow I played this game way more than I ever did Pokemon. My favorite parts are all of the little send offs to other Dragon Quest games like rooms and such.

I'm looking forward to this LP - DWM brought me back into gaming after the demise of the SNES. I spent hours playing it at my work-study job in college...
Although I think DWM2 is superior in almost every way. |

So, I'm back and I started working on the next update and realized that I kinda messed up here [sorry boss]. Turns out we only have 4 letters for the name. We could go for Tex as a stand in for Texas or we could do something else.
