Last we left him, our hero was battling with a tragic case of amnesia. After a week and a half of struggle he gave up. Looking at the wall of the king’s chamber he found a single map of the state of Texas. Unfortunately the king’s minister had spilled some white out and what our hero saw was a map of the state of Tex.

with my wish? My wish is nothing but... for you to participate and win the tournament of the Starry Night. What you say you would rather find your kidnapped sister? Didn’t you come here to comply with my request? ........ hm........hmmmmm.....! However, there is an easier way than searching for her. Win the tournament of the Starry Night! Legend has it that the one who is victorious in the tournament of the Starry Night will be granted a wish. Your wish to find your sister will be granted! That way we both win... Meanwhile, search for your sister while you prepare for the tournament! Here I shall give you some monsters. Without any monsters, you cannot serve as a master! The monster farm is on the upper level. Go and ask Pulio for your monsters.

Tex gives the king his name and is answered with a request to go of and win some tournament. All he wants to do is get his sister and go home before his parents ground him for staying up past his bedtime! The king takes a bit to think it over and decides that Tex should still go win the tournament. Apparently he can wish for his sister back. Well, that isn’t much better than finding her all on his own.

Time to head off to the farm and get our first monster.

Tex: Well yes of course we came here to steal your monsters!

Pulio: C’mon, I’ll give you a beating. Sniff, sniff... Oh, you are a monster master. I know by your scent. You have the makings of a great master. I’m Pulio I take care of this farm. I heard about you from the King. Take your monsters. Well, actually, I only have one monster... It’s Slib. It was the favorite of our last king.

Tex procures his monster and gets ready to roll out.

Here is the stat page for our new slimy friend. All of the stats are fairly straight-forward.

Lv: umm... Yah, I shouldn’t need to explain this one

ATK: Determines how much damage the monster will do with a normal attack. This also modifies some skills such as evil slash, the elemental slashes, and giga slash (I’m not 100% on this one though)

DEF: Modifies how much damage the monster takes from attacks

AGL: Determines the order monsters will attack in, highest goes first followed by the next highest and so on.

INT: This skill is a little strange. It determines when monster’s skills will “level up” I will get into this more at the end of the update

WLD: This is also a little odd, and I personally hate it. When you leave monsters on the farm, they gain WLD over time. The higher the WLD stat, the more likely a monster is to not do what you wanted it to do or do nothing at all! This stat goes down when you walk around with them in your party or when you feed them meat. All bred monsters start at 0 WLD. Most monsters we find will start with a low WLD stat, or a 0 stat (see Slib)

HP: It’s HP

MP: MP is used up when monsters use skills. There are some items that restore it, but it also restores as we walk around in a travelers’ gate.

There are three other pages to the stats menu, but we won’t worry about those for now, as Slib here has nothing on them!

former king’s...Tex! Why did you adopt that monster? Huh? This is the only one left? That Pulio!!! He must’ve let the other monster’s escape! Pulio! Pulio! Bring Pulio here!

*Jester goes off to grab Pulio*

forgive me.
King: Pulio, Did Hale escape as well?
Pulio: Your Majesty please forgive me! Hale escaped too.
King: Arrgh! You! You let my precious Hale escape too! This is unforgivable! Throw him in the dungeon!!

It seems our green friend from the farm wasn’t so innocent...

You have something to say?! What? You will catch Hale to free Pulio? You say you will catch Hale? Ummm... Sounds interesting. You may try Tex.
Pulio: Majesty, hale escaped through the Travelers’ Gate.
King: I see. Now, Tex, proceed to the Travelers’ Gate. If you bring Hale back, I will pardon Pulio. The treasure chest in the next room is now yours. You are dismissed. Busy! Busy! Busy!

*King heads off to his back room*

Tex, as a proper hero, stands up for Pulio [ironically word decided that this should auto-correct to polio]

The King doesn’t have to tell Tex twice. He heads off into the next room and nabs the two herbs out of the two (apparently the king can’t count...) chests.

(That blue swirl is the entrance to the travelers’ gate)

The dungeon is now open, so Tex skips merrily down the stairs to the waiting gate.

Tex emerges in a strange land with little hills and trees no taller than himself (not shown is slib following behind us. Your monsters in your party follow behind you and when the *die* they turn into little floating coffins). As we move around there is a chance we will be attacked by monsters everywhere, a la true RPGs.

Here is the map of the current floor we are on. Dragon Warrior Monsters uses a floor system in its dungeons travelers’ gates. The 1 / 4 at the top means that Tex is currently on the first of 4 dungeon floors. There are actually 5 floors to this gate, but the map doesn’t count the final boss floor of each gate as a floor because you can’t be attacked by monsters there.

The quill is Tex and that black circle is the “magic hole” (insert innuendo here). Magic holes serve as the stairs between floors, except they are one way, and are the objective for each floor. Here the game was kind enough to spawn Tex on the same screen.

Tex promptly goes down the rabbit hole and moves on to floor two of the gate. He gets about two feet though and is attack by a slime monster!

The slime actually gets Slib down pretty low, but he prevails in the end. For his effort all of Tex’s party, all one of them :P, gets some experience points, well an experience point.

A bit later Tex runs into a dracky monster which is much more dangerous than a lowly slime. It takes Slib down to about 1/3 health before it goes down, but once it does something off happens...

It gets back up and wants to join our party. Obviously, Tex welcomes in with open arms. But what to name it?

Tex thinks back to the map that helped him in the past and remembers a big star with the word A st n on it (more whit out accidents). He names his new pet dracky and goes on.

Astn here has a bit more going for him than Slib. He has much higher ATK, INT, AGL and MP. Unfortunately with a DEF of 3 and only 12(!) HP he will be a bit of a glass cannon for a bit. That is okay though, because he can take out most of the monsters Tex will run into in just a few hits.

Unlike Slib, Astn has a skill!

Skills are the magic system in Dragon Warrior Monsters and cost a certain amount of MP to use. Some can be used anywhere and others can only be used in battle. Every monster learns exactly three skills naturally (dracky here will learn sleep and heal in addition to antidote). Three skills for the entire life of a monster may not sound like much, but they is a bit more to it than just that. As a monster’s INT stat goes up its skills will “level up” For example, heal becomes heal more, which becomes heal all. This way no monster starts out with a ridiculously overpowered skill, but the skills don’t become obsolete.

The other way to get skills is through breeding which I will get into later.

After the next battle, Astm gains a level! His DEF gets a much needed boost and his AGI stats gets even higher.

This is an example of why these floors can sometimes take for ever in the beginning. After a few gates Tex will be able to buy an item called a beasttail which will point towards the magic hole. Tex ventures off to the left and finds something very interesting.

That golden wing on the map is an item, specifically a warpwing. Warpwings are very special items because they are the only way to exit a gate other than getting to the final floor or dying, which is not a good thing.

Dying in Dragon Warrior Monsters is not a good thing. If all your monsters die, then you are warped back to Great Tree and you lose all of your money and items.

A bit later, Tex finds another new monster!

This guy is actually quite dangerous

Here he takes off half of Slib’s HP in one hit. Luckily, having a 2 to 1 advantage, Tex and his pets pull through. Slib and Astn both actually gain a level out of it.

You may have noticed that in the time it took for Slib to gain a single level, Astn has already gained two. This is just one of the many reasons why Slib is terrible. Ideally, I can swap him out for an anteater, a dracky and Hale after this gate (unfortunately the RNG gods hated me and didn’t have any of the anteaters I killed join me). Slib has good DEF and AGI, but he has terrible ATK and INT stats. On top of that, he learns some nearly useless skills at absurdly high levels and gains levels about as fast as a fly on glue paper. Unfortunately for me, I have to catch 4 more of these guys . I’m not gonna bother with that until I can breed them though.

Tex makes it to the final floor of the dungeon with little trouble, most of the later gates will have 20+ levels to them. This floor is absolutely tiny, measuring a whole two screens across.

Tex grinds a bit hoping for an anteater to join him but after a bit decides to just go ahead and finish up. Here is the final floor of the dungeon.

I know you are here to catch me. But you can forget it. The farm is boring. I don’t wanna go back!

Hale strikes up some dialogue with Tex, Hale is an oddly courteous monster, before brutally attacking his pets.

Here is the interface if you choose command on the battle screen. Charge tells the monster to attack/use an offensive skill. Mixed tells the monster to use a support skill. Cautious tells the monster to defend/use a defensive skill (healing magic etc.). Command lets you specifically attack, defend, or use a specific skill. You may wonder why the first three commands are even there, but you will see.

So my plan against Hale was to put him to sleep with Astn and attack with Slib. This keeps him from doing anything, but unfortunately, I wasn’t doing enough damage. I switched to just all out attacking and it was going pretty well until...

Hale completely heals himself to full health...

and then does it again

and again.

This is why this boss can actually be fairly difficult. He doesn’t attack for a whole lot, but he is fairly high level and can completely heal himself many times. As a result he can slowly wear your team down. Thankfully Tex had the mind to fully explore all of the floors and grab a bunch of herbs, the basic healing items. He actually used about 5 herbs during this battle.

After a while, though, Tex defeats the mighty Hale!

He even offers to come with us.

I didn’t want to change his name because it’s a big nostalgia thing for me. Say hello to Tex’s newest pet Hale

After the battle Hale gives a little speech.

Tex

I’ll take you back to the castle!

And with that Tex heads back to the castle with his task complete.

I was going to keep going, but this is already quite long I think this is actually a better place to stop. What does everyone think about using cities in Texas to name monsters? Leave your feedback.

From here I plan to do an update for each arena battle/gate. That would be ~30 more updates, so I may lump some of the early gates together. There won’t be as much talking from here on out, so the updates should get shorter. I also want to do an update of a walk through of a travelers’ gate. The first few gates aren’t very good examples of this though so it will come later.

Hey, that was a great first update. I thought the LP would be a little dry but your writeup was funny and the pace was good. I liked the part where the king had a single map of just Texas. I like the naming scheme for now but I think you should use some names you like, too.

Let’s Play Dragon Warrior Monsters!
Episode 2: Dungeons and Dragons!

After battling through the depths of his first travelers’ gate, Tex emerges victorious gripping the writhing body of a magical healing jellyfish! And then he realized that if he hurt it the king would kill him; so, Tex put the monster down and bought it some ice cream so it would stop crying. Anyways, Watabou teleported him to the king’s receiving room.

back hale!? What? Hale said he doesn’t want to come back to me? ... But he said he would rather join you? Hmm. I see.. Hmm... You sure are good with monsters. Well done! I’m pleased with your performance! I will let Pulio go!
Pulio: Thank you Tex! Now I can go back to my farm!
(exit Pulio)
King: Tex. Go to the arena. Your rivals are waiting for you at the arena. You can compete in the tournament if you defeat all of them. You are dismissed. Busy! Busy! Busy!

(exit King)

Tex the power of GreatTree! To get to the arena, go straight out of the castle and go down. If you survive in the arena, you can compete in the tournament.

Before Tex has a chance to call MPS (Monster Protective Services) the king lets Tex keep Hale and sends him off on his next quest, conquering the arena!

It’s so ubiquitous that I almost used it as the byline for the thread, but the Master Monster Tamer won out because I like him better

Back to Tex’s quest. The minister heals his monsters, hands him an herb, and points Tex in the direction of the arena.

Oh, No!

A tragic scene greets Tex as he exits the royal court. Fed up with having apples all day long, a servant of the king attempts suicide by jumping. Tex shouts after him
But apple pies are so delicious!?!?
It is no use and the man disappears from sight. Tex dives down the cliff in hopes of saving the man’s life (magical jellyfish make for a soft landing).

And he finds that the man has only fallen a single story. Reaffirmed of his role and enjoying a slice of pie, the man refuses to budge and Tex begrudgingly observes the area around him.

Tex: Is that a piece of...
Woman: Oh no, that’s the arena
Tex: But why does it look like...
Woman: That’s a slime! Get your mind out of the gutter!
Tex: But it’s brown and... (trails off)

Confused by the signage, Tex gives up and wanders through the massive doorway.

A giant rock monster greets him with a toothy grin. Utterly confounded by this peculiar village (where do they all live?), Tex asks a receptionist for directions to the arena.

Huh? Me? I’m famous here. Everyone likes me. Hee Hee Hee. So you want to become the champ to find your sister? To do that, you must survive here to represent our kingdom. There are classes in the arena. They go all the way up to D. There are higher classes than D, but you’re not ready for them yet. What do you think? Ready to fight? G class if free.

Never one to back off from a challenge, Tex accepts the famous(?) receptionist’s challenge.

She directs him through the monster(?) and a huge cheering crowd greets Tex as he comes on stage.

arena! A new challenger [approaches]! Ladies & Gents! Please welcome tex! Now [let’s get ready to rumble!].

After the announcer’s speech tex is expecting Hulk Hogan to come out and punch his face in. Instead an old fat man rolls onto stage with two bats and an anteater.

Here is probably the hardest part of the arena. You can’t expressly pick what skill you want your monsters to use (it isn’t a big deal now, but once all of them have a full list of skills it will be). You can only choose charge, mixed or cautious.

Tex simply rushes through these guys and they go down in no time.

goes to the challenger! Now we begin the 2nd match!

Bolstered by his easy victory, Tex faces down the next challenger in a fight to the death!

This stubsuck could be a real problem because it can do decent damage and put Tex’s monsters to sleep.

Astn is faster than it though and quickly puts it to sleep. The slimes are picked off and the stump is put back to sleep whenever it wakes up. Finally all that is left is the stump.

FATALITY!

Slib quickly solves the problem though...

The announcer moves tex onto the third and final match against the Principal of the Master School!

Tex checks his blackberry and makes sure that it isn’t Halloween as the principal comes out onto the stage.

The too ghosts on the outside are spookies and the zombie in the center is a hork. Tex simply sets slib to charge, Astn to mixed and Hale to cautious. This will have slib attack, Astn attack or put something to sleep and hale heal or defend. He runs into a problem though...

If a monster gets licked there is a good chance that it won’t do anything for the next few turns.

Tex pulls out his trust crucifix though and axes one of the ghosts Belmont style (actually slib just got another lucky crit here)

The battle continues on for a while and one of my favorite things happens, Hale gets a crit heal. Dragon Warrior Monsters is awesome and instead of just saying critical hit it says “___ shouts a battlecry” for skills, “___ attacks with fullforce” for attacks and “A celestial light covers ___” for healing.

The battle continues with few interruptions afterwards and Tex gets a fairly easy victory.

winner! Give a round of applause for Master Tex!

I’ll leave our hero here for today. Next, Tex braves the perils of the gate of villager! Yah, it's a two part update.

I've never really understood why the Zombies are called 'Horks'. Maybe it's some kind of pun that I'm not thinking of, but it seems like an odd translation move.

I'm kind of used to poor DQ translations though, since DQ7 is what finally cemented that series as one of my favorites and that game has a really sketchy translation.

I'm quite liking this so far. I'm considering playing it myself, or getting a hold of Joker! Perhaps.

A question though: how does the breeding system compare to the SMT games, if you've played them, and how does skill inheritance for breeding work (I assume you lose all parent monsters right? I read that in Joker you do)?

Also, I assume breeded monsters start at level 1, right? That must get kind of annoying when trying to breed stronger monsters.

The interface, from what I've seen, is fairly similar. You simply select 1 male monster and 1 female monster and breed. Yes you lose both parents but generally a bred monster will gain more stats than its parents as it levels up. There is a system that restricts this though, if you breed a monster too much it will take forever to level up. I'll get into that more later. By later I mean in 1 more update.

Sorry I haven't forgotten about this, just been really busy and all.

edit

and cause I'm a sucker for teasers

Oh about the grindy part, yes it does get kind of grindy. You won't be doing mass breeding type stuff for most of the game though. There is one really great place to lvl monsters but unfortunately it is part of the postgame content... I will not be showing all the grinding I will be doing for the LP when it comes around to breeding.

Welcome back to Let’s Play Dragon Warrior Monsters

your victory in G class. The king summons you. Come this way!

Revealing in his victory, Tex parades through the town. The townspeople stare in awe at the might that defeated a couple slimes and a zombie! Now it is time for Tex to get rolling into the real travelers’ gates.

survived G class! Well done! You’re not b... Never mind!
*enter purple king*

Purple King: I realized that you are the host this time. As the host, I hope you will fight with honor! Oh, what a cute little child. Were you playing with the king? I am the King of GreatLog. King of GreatTree, it’s going to be a quick battle. Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!
*exit King of GreatLog*

King of GreatTree: Argh, we will see who has the last laugh! Tex! You must win! I’ll open the Room and Villager and Talisman as a reward. It’ll be useful for you. There are stronger monsters there. You’re dismissed! Busy! Busy! Busy!

Whew, Tex is met with a long “cut-scene” on his return to the castle. The rival town/plant/castle’s leader comes and does the required evil-villain-taunting, our good king retorts in anger etc. The upside though is that we now have access to the travelers’ gates of villager and talisman. The first gate was the tutorial one and these two are the real “first” traveler’s gates.

Down in the dungeon another door is open, the one on the left, and all of the guards have moved around so Tex can go to about 3 other screens, but all of the rooms are closed.

Here we have the two travelers’ gates. Tex can go to them in any order and actually skip them completely if he wants to, but they will be good experience points so he head over to the gate of villager, because it has a frickin’ dragon.

As I said earlier I will try to record the levels for the first few levels so everyone gets a feel for the level generating algorithms. Every floor of every dungeon (well not quite all of them but I’ll deal with that in a bit) is randomly generated by a level generating algorithm. It changes as Tex progresses through the travelers’ gates, but only in size; so, developing an instinctual feeling for which way will get you where helps a lot. Some of the floors can get massive and will take forever to finish, others will spawn you 1 tile away from the magic hole. Hopefully these few images will give you guys a feel for the levels. Also, after the next gate Tex will get an item that makes it so he doesn’t have to explore the entire level to find the magic hole.

Tex found 1 pokeball!

So here we have DWM’s pokeballs (that piece of meat on the ground). This one is a piece of beef jerky and is all Tex will get for a bit. Eventually he will run into some porkchops and the occasional rib.

Our first new monster in this gate is the GoHopper. It really doesn’t do anything. It attacks for moderate damage and that’s it. Tex will murder many of these before he gets through the gate.

Floor 2! This level has a different theme and a different algorithm for its level. There are no paths wider than 2 tiles so these levels will go very quickly.

We’ve already seen these before at the arena, but I just thought I’d note that they show up here too and are just as annoying.

Tex is still upset over being ripped off earlier and not getting an anteater; so, he’s gonna try and get one right here. To catch a monster first you need to throw food at it.

This will make the monsters like Tex more and eventually...

Once knocked, join him... Except there is no way to tell if you have thrown enough food at them. In pokemon you see if the ‘mon is caught or it broke free. Here you get nothing. With random wandering monsters it is okay, but with boss monsters that you only get to fight once it makes catching some monsters VERY ANNOYING. This is the worst part of DWM, but its okay because I still love it <3.

This is another time of item, money! For some reason the first gate doesn’t have any money in it, but this one does? Tex will be trying to get as much money as possible because it actually matters in this, and he needs 400g (this is 17).

Here we have another one of the issues with the catching system. Tex can’t feed meat to a single monster, he either feeds it to all of his guys or all of the enemies. Then once they are all knocked out, the last monster knocked out, and only that one, has a chance to join you. To get around this I simply kill all of the other monsters first and then give them food.

A bit later, Tex finds the magic hole and finds himself somewhere completely different

A special floor! Whenever Tex goes to the next floor there is a chance that it will be a special level like this. They range from arenas to shops to a church, which this one is. They are nice because they break up the constant similar floors, but they only pop up 1-2 in an 8 floor gate. This one heals all of Tex’s monsters completely and give him a chance to save. You aren’t allowed to save in the travelers’ gates, except for on a few special floors, so this one is a nice mid-way point on the longer gates. I’ll explain the rest as I go along.

Here’s the fourth and final floor of the dungeon. It’s fairly similar to the rest of the floors except for one little tile all the way in the top left corner.

This is a foreign master and they are awesome. They are randomly spawned on normal floors and have 3 random monsters. You can fight them for a lot of experience and 1 bonus. This guy is a warrior and will give us 2 items for defeating him; others are wizards who warp you to the magic hole and priests who heal your team.

The most important part of foreign masters, though, is that you can tame their monsters! It works exactly like with normal monsters you randomly encounter except these are much much rarer. Often running into a foreign master with the right monsters can save you hours of breeding and training. Almost all of the monsters they have can’t be found in the travelers’ gates or are only found in the later/postgame gates. For example, finding a master with a lava man early in the game can net you a gold golem, the BEST monster in the materials family who will only have a +1. That probably sounds like a bunch of nonsense, but I’ll explain it once we get there so just don’t worry about it for now.

Before Tex challenges this one he wants to go make sure he has all of the beef jerky he can find because it is going to take a lot of it to get one of this guy’s monsters to go with him.

While he was looking around he found one of these guys, a gremlin. Gremlins are really great early game monsters for two reasons. 1: they learn heal and offensive magic so they can fill two rolls with 1 monster. 2: they are resistant to fire (maybe all) attacks. This one is a bit random, but the two most common moves any monster learns are fireair and firebal. Both of those hit all of your party members for decent damage. If your healer can resist one, it can heal the rest of your party up without having to worry about getting 1 shotted the next turn.

Also, gremlins do solid damage as seen here

It just took half the hp off all of Tex’s monsters with 1 attack! Luckily, heavy use of herbs keeps tex’s monsters from being knocked out.

This is Tex’s big mistake. He should not have tried to get this gremlin and should have saved that beefjerky for the foreign master. Foreign masters are quite rare and finding another one would probably take several runthroughs of this gate. Meanwhile, gremlins are fairly common on this floor and getting another one would only take going back through the gate once.

The gamble doesn’t work out in tex’s favor and he is left with a single piece of beef jerk left. A bit more exploration nets him 1 more, but that is fairly pitiful if he wants to get a monster off the master.

Oh well, time to try and see if tex can nab anything.

Before he gets there though, Tex runs into this little trio. This is incredibly dangerous for him. Fighting both of those gremlins would be a very bad move because if they both used fireair, they will KO Tex’s entire party at worst or take out everyone but slib at best.

Tex employs the run command here and gets away though.

Back to the foreign master.

spotking/lizardfly/gasgon

Because this is the second gate his monsters are nothing special, except for that spot king. They won’t show up in gates for a long time and tex just happens to need exactly 1 spotking for his goldslime. Catching this spotking would save Tex a lot of hassle and would net him a really useful skill for his Goldslime.

This attack calls for a hidden 4th monster to join your battle. At the first levels it is really weak and almost not worth the effort, but at higher levels it effectively adds a 4th member to your party. It has its own hp, mp and skills. Monsters can attack it, instead of your actual monsters. This skill is awesome and I love it.

So, Tex starts picking off the rest of the foreign master’s party by putting 1 to sleep and attacking the other. The spotking actually isn’t a threat here at all.

The lizardfly goes down and then

the gasgon goes down shortly there after.

Tex chucks two pieces of beefjerky at the spotking and prays.

Unfortunately, Tex already wasted his one prayer on that 3rd floor and gets zip here. The spotking does not join his party, but all of his monsters gain a level and ASTN actually gains 2 monsters.

Being a warrior, he hands over his goods to Tex, which are surprisingly good. That warpwing is meh, but the seed is great!

That is a huge boost at this point in the game and goes immediately to Hale.

Depressed after his fateful match with the warrior, Tex heads down to the final floor.

Um sure... *chooses Yes*
*blush* Oh please carry me back to the castle!
Narrator: Tex tries to pick up the princess...
In vain!

Princess: I’ll wait for a stronger hero to save me.

After failing to save a princess Tex decides to try his luck at something else heroic.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a guest.

Slaying Dragons!

Say hello to the boss, Dragon! He’s a fairly mean boss and hats much harder than Hale. He attacks for about half of our guys hp, has a fire slash attack this would probably kill ASTN in 1 hit (he never did though thankfully) and this

Fireair (I told you it was common) is the biggest threat in this fight, so healing is a top priority after it. Keeping Hale on cautious for the fight will allow you to use an herb on him and have Hale heal someone in the same turn.

Tex fights through and slowly breaks the dragon down. Finally, Slib pulls out his lucky sword (I swear he’s been getting a ridiculous amount of crits.) and slays the mighty dragon.

Like most early bosses, the dragon actually joins our party!

Tex is still unable to think up any good names so he just sticks with his lucky map.

And here is dlas the dragon. I haven’t showed you guys that second screen there because, well it hasn’t mattered yet. At the top are his name, gender and level. Below that is his “nature,” this matters for the charge/mixed/cautious choices but I won’t worry about it too much. Next is the monster, family, master and total exp. Family is important but I’ll deal with that once we get to breeding (at this rate I think I’m going to have to do an entire update on how to breed). At the bottom is the exp, to next level.

Well that’s the end of this update. I’ve started getting into a rhythm for writing these things so hopefully the next one will be sooner for you guys.

Geez, I've forgotten a lot about this game. I was really confused when I saw all the uppertier monsters in the preview. I only played about seven or eight gates into the game, so I guess that might explain why I don't remember much.

All these bosses are references to other Dragon Quests. The cave in which you find that HealSlime is also the cave where you find him in Dragon Quest IV, and of course the dragon and princess here are just as they were in Dragon Quest I.

I knew that many of them were, but I wasn't aware that all of them were. I'm curious where the fangslime boss room comes from (he's a while off, at least I think he is right now).

So I'm officially putting this thread on hiatus. Hopefully it will return in 2-3 weeks after I finish up my IB tests. I am planning on switching to a video format and will most likely restart. Thank you

Good luck on your tests man. It's a sad thing that Tex's adventure has ended here.

Nice job J, a pretty good start to a good game. I've always found it interesting to see the parallels between the early Pokemon games and their clones and I think this one may be my favorite.

You're back! A dinosaur story...
I like the video format so far. Will you need to do any grinding, and would it be on or offscreen?

I'm either going to speed up the emulator or just pause the recording until something interesting comes up for the long boring parts.

Episode II for your enjoyment.

A trip through the first travelers gate. A little on the combat system and the travelers' gates themselves.

Unfortunately I am going to have to redo the travelers' gate because my emulator crashed, but I will start from the boss fight (where I left off on this video).
