Default Space Quest 3: The Endgame

Soon the screen in front of Roger beeps and he again has something to do!

We head on over to the weapons screen and activate the rear shields

Now begins a boring "action" sequence in which a 3 fighters will approach from the front firing on the mallard and then one will shoot from the rear before Roger will have a chance to fire at it. We'll have to shift the shields back and forth from the front to the back and then to the front. Before he is shot again. If the ship is shot more than 3 times the shields will be depleted and the ship destroyed (and the game will end.) The sequence repeats three times.

The last ship in the three ship frontal wave

Roger's chance to destroy one of the ships after its shot at him from behind

targeting is done using the movement keys (this is very difficult) or moving the mouse cursor over the ship, once the ship is targeted you'll get a lock and then must shoot it before it escapes.

the weapons system has locked on

We go through this 3 times before the ships give up

The rest of the game is cutscenes folks! We've beat Space Quest 3, again with a perfect score. Now the ending:

You can't tell from the screen below but those bits of light are being sucked into the blackness in the center of the screen

After landing the Two Guys from Andromeda and Roger disembark and talk to the single man who's walked out of the building Roger has just parked his ship in front of

The two guys mention Astro Chicken of which Ken has never heard

EDIT: I found the missing bits

I found my SQ III manual the other day, and the green-tinted Two Guys cardboard visor-glasses. I remember it also had a pig nose-thing that attached to the bridge of the visor, but I seem to have lost the nose somewhere along the way. =/

Thanks for the LP, falselogic!

So Space Quest III ends with a fourth wall break of the Two Guys From Andromeda, who were already fourth wall breakers, getting jobs at Sierra to make the Space Quest games? Heh, love how Roger Wilco gets turned down for a janitor job there. Looking forward to the stuff from SQ1's remake now.

Anyway, are there any worthwhile undocumented deaths from that whole Scummsoft segment to show off? I still love those avvy-sized pics of your demise.

Of course! Tomorrow's update will be the rest of the deaths in the game!

Wait until SQ4, where they break the fourth wall and then jump up and down on its fragments. It's glorious.

Please tell me there will be an SQ4 LP. Because that was the first one I didn't play, and I don't remember SQ3 being so.. short. The other ones are definitely brief too, but they somehow feel more epic in scope.

But these have been excellent!

There had better be a Space Quest IV LP. That's about the only Sierra game besides SQ6 I'd want to have a video LP of, just to enjoy Gary Owens as the snarky narrator.

Sorry to interrupt the death montage, but I've finally figured out where I've seen the Space Quest 3 logo's III before. It looks like a mock-up version of the old Atari logo. Gosh, a jab at another game company in Space Quest 3? How unlikely that is!

Leisure Suit Larry 3 ended with the same device of the characters from the game becoming computer programmers at Sierra.

Great LP, falselogic! I loved it.

I've been reading both the current posts and starting from the beginning. Oh man. If I can convince myself to get past time-based puzzles I ought to give these games a shot. I should probably quit reading to avoid spoilers but.. anyway, a fine Let's play indeed.

Monkey Island 1 made fun of Sierra more overtly than that line from the ending (which I always thought was LucasArts making fun of themselves) There's a cliff on Monkey Island that you can fall off, and a menu pops up that looks exactly like the Sierra death menu. But then Guybrush bounces back on a "rubber tree" somehow.

I remember that scene and how awesome it was. I also know that for as much as The Secret of Monkey Island avoids killing the player, there is one death in the game. You can drown if you stay underwater for longer than ten minutes when LeChuck Sheriff Shinetop dumps you into the water tied to the idol. Your commands even switch to what a drowned corpse would do.

Sierra's idiotic programing of SQ4's timing puzzles is making me leery too. I can't believe they didn't realize that at some time in the future, computers might get faster.

I don't think it even qualifies as that. Lots of programmers in the 80s and 90s were taught how to code for fixed hardware platforms. Largely because most hardware was fixed at the time (video game consoles and business machines alike were built to strict standards), or close enough to it (the 33MHz processor was extraordinarily popular for a very long time; people were still buying them in the earlier part of the Pentium era).

So in a way, the processor speed was a bit of a "blind spot" of sorts for software developers for a very long time, even well after it was apparent that processor speeds would eventually start going up again.

I don't know anything about SQ4 (that's not true I've beat it at least twice) but I don't know anything about a SQ4 LP... I haven't signed up for it thats for sure...

expect bonus Space Quest 1 VGA to begin trickling in the next week or so... no promises though because the holidays can be busy.

Felicitations! Also, is there any particular reason why you have Quohog getting nose-slammed into the bar of the Kick Stand by Ben from Full Throttle as your avatar?

What Merus said... But if you head over to the explain my avatar thread you'll see where I asked TT for new ideas for an avatar. I was getting tired of Fester and they told me to stick with the sleazy behind the counter guy... So, Quohog!

Default Bumping the thread!

Sorry, there hasn't been any SQ1VGA here folks... That's been because of the Holidays and such. I'm hoping to log some time over the break and start posting it up...

Thanks for waiting!

Default Sorry for the Wait but here it is! Bonus, Space Quest VGA!

Sorry about the wait! I had the holidays to deal with and then w/ emulation issues with SQVGA! But all that is done!

Okay, so Space Quest VGA was released in 1991 and took advantage of VGA graphics and Sound Blaster! From what I've been told the original intent was to re-release 2 and 3 as well with the new graphics and interface but the sales of this one weren't up to snuff

Since this is a bonus I'm just going to point out the big differences and then show you all the deaths, which is what you came here for anyway.

A lot of the text is the same, and the lick and smell commands aren't worth the time the programmers spent put them in there...

Anyway let's go with Space Quest VGA! (first the title screen music)

Then there is a great deal of credits, which is strikingly different from the original SQ that had 4 people worked on, then we see:

This image included solely so you can see an original Romulan Bird of Prey (it can pop up later too!)

As you can see the Arcada and the Deltour have undergone a serious visual overhaul, also note that the Arcada looks like a chicken. We're then introduced to our hero (ignore the robot screaming by) :

This time the self destruct thing gets a fancy counter!

It moves around the 4 different corners of the screen depending on Roger's location! Wow, the technology of 1991. So, I make my way through the Arcada just like last time. I loot a body, talk to a dying scientist, encounter the shitty copy protection scheme and then enter the screen where in the original game the Star Generator was stored, in this game Roger staggers and the music gets ominous, also not the pixely item at the base, this isn't a required item but it does make things much simpler later

Making his way down to the lower levels of the game, we come to what SkyRender has been calling Sierra Dick Moves (TM) and this is one of the few I can see in this game:

There is no way to make it to the next screen before these guys show up and blast you. You have to hide behind this bulkhead here, right next to the part of the ship that looks like a giant mouse

Once they leave you can now continue on with the rest of the game!

PS I don't know why Photobucket decided to size those last two images much larger than the rest of them...

I actually found that a lot of the text on the critical path changed. SQ1 EGA's critical path was surprisingly dry.

Default Leaving the Arcade

So we open the bay doors, grab a space suit, and a universal translator and make our way to an escape pod, you no longer have to raise it up though

Roger launches himself into Infinity and Beyond and the Arcade blows up

We all know what that means! Roger pushes

Rewind and we're back to heading towards Kerona:

With that Roger finds himself on a strange world with no idea how to get off of it! Next time Arcada Deaths and then Kerona Adventures

I just replayed it and except for some little expounding on surroundings (when altered), the Droids B Us store, and the Sarien conversations it all sounded the same to me . Oh and the Sarien Gun Droid, early HK-47 there...

The Deaths have been re-done though

I think a lot of the dialogue's the same, but I remember in the EGA version there was a lot of 'taken' and 'done' when you did things, which I think in the VGA version are either animated, or have actual jokes. I remember the description of the alarm as being different and actually funny as well.

Default SQ1VGA: Arcada Deaths

I'm back, and hoping the LP won't experience any more delays until it is all wrapped up! Ok, so we left off with Roger getting off the Arcada and landing on the now hi-def, color rich planet of Kerona. Before we continue with his adventures though it's time for all the entertaining ways Roger figured out to help ventilate his internal organs while on the Arcada!

Roger manages to avoid detection but fails to escape the Arcada:

"Interacting" with Guests:

After getting into the spacesuit returning to the main section of the Arcada:

Entering the ship bay without the spacesuit:

Falling of the platform in the ship bay:
