The USB connector doesn't actually work for playing on the PC. It sends no data, only power for charging. You need one of the XBox Wireless Controller USB dongles to use the wireless controllers with a PC.

I think. At least, that's what the OS X drivers claim.

Awesome job, Octopus Prime.

...I also request the Second Quest. I know the first quest like the back of my hand, but I never made much progress in the second.

Great job, brother of Optimus. I think your problem is less playing with the keyboard and more going into lvl 6 with only 6 hearts.

I can basically make it all the way through the 1st quest, and until lvl 4 or such of the 2nd one with the keyboard, but red bubbles make me QQ.

This is what I use (and recommend) to play old games on my PC.

That might have had something to do with it, yes.

Half the images are Photobucket error messages, the other half don't correspond to the text beneath them.

I saw everything fine the first time through, but now that I'm looking again, everything on the first page and a half is all messed up.

Let this be a warning against trying to rearrange the contents of your photo bucket account, I guess.

It looks like everything is copasetic now, though.

This brought back great memories. Since Zelda was among the games I lent to a friend who took it with him when moving, I haven't beaten it or played it since I was 10 or so.

I remember the level 9 dungeon seeming like such an impossible to comprehend maze to me. The first time I beat it, a babysitter was over and she knew where to go to get the red ring and the silver arrow. After that time, every other time I beat the game, I could never figure out where the red ring was, so I would always beat it with only a blue ring.

I also managed to beat the second quest once, but have no clue how I did that. I can only guess that I used Nintendo Power.

I used GameFAQs just to push through and beat it for the first time a couple years ago, but really I think as kids we could have solved it on our own if we just had an indication -- any indication -- that walking through dungeon walls was possible. It's not like those phantom rocks on the overworld you just walk through, you actually have to push against the wall for a couple seconds before you'll move through it. There's just no way to know such a thing is even possible, and it's required as early as Level 2 (which we found on our own).

A fine run-through, Octopus. Your tips and screens have given me the fortitude to keep pushing on. Currently, I only have Levels 6 and 8 (and their treasures) left to complete and one more overworld heart container to fine. I also still need to grab the bomb upgrade from Level 7.

I... I think I'll go ahead and save Level 6 for last. I just went in there and got the crap beat out of me. At least I got through with my Magic Shield still in my possession.

Well, since the fight with Ganon has been shown, I think this is a good time to link to this little story. I've only written two pieces of fanfiction, and they're both technically game-play accurate!

When my sister and I played the game the first time, we named our character "Zelda" (hey, the name was right there in the box). My friends got treated with funny stories about the game's difficulty being too steep and magic dungeon walls you could go through if you pushed long enough.

Playing the game again many years later, I still can't believe we finished the game, either. Our second quest, the one we got by naming our character Link, was a cakewalk in comparison

That's the best Zelda story I've heard in a while.

In hindsight, that was a really stupid way to unlock the second quest.

You have to tell me how you kids knew where to find the Dungeons that involved 1-Whistling in the desert and 2-Bombing the cliffside from the ladder as rocks fall on your head. Not that I don't believe you, but goddamn. Madness!

Remember Milon Secret Castle and how shooting everything in sight still wasn't reviled as a design mistake? I didn't have any reason to think, at the time, that a game should have intuitive solutions to everything. Heck, at the time I didn't even have reason to think the game had clues for any solution.

We were much younger, had much time, and I remember bombing every wall, burning every tree and whistling in every single screen in that game. (also, pushing every dungeon wall, which was how we found the invisible doors). I don't know how we got past the Lost Woods...

Great run! I humbly request The Dude take on the second quest.

For some reason I never could find the Red Ring in the first quest as a kid. I honestly thought that it was a second-quest exclusive for years.

I was inspired to play Zelda over the past couple days. I would just like to say: Fuck level 6, fuck it right in the ear.
