Also, since I'm just catching up on this thread and the game itself...

The blocks in Snake Man's stage were at least interesting during the fight, but moving the clouds didn't seem all that important, since you don't need to maneuver them around the floor and you barely need to move them at all in the last segment.

The Met being held up by the magnet is just wonderful, and I like that this game used them in places where the player couldn't easily kill them, especially that one following you along the spikes.

Placing top platforms in front of the cat was a great idea.

Everything about Bubble Man and the redesign of Gemini Man's stage was fantastic.

The falling rocks during the Hard Man fight were fun and I dearly wish more boss fights had moving or changing terrain like that.

EDIT: And I vote for round 2 of Hard Man, as I haven't finished the game yet because this one has the last shiny thing and I can't find it.

Wait. Wait wait. The Doc Robots in Mega Man 3 take the form of MM2 robot masters.

But you're PLAYING AS the MM2 robot masters.

My mind is blown.

A giant snake factory is an odd sight. A ruined Giant Snake Factory is a metaphor for the troubled times we live in.

I still think that it's really neat that they made the original boss order work with the MM2 RMs as the weapons. It's not perfect (how does Heat Man work against Hard Man, anyhow?) but some of them, like Wood Man vs. Magnet Man, are brilliant.

Thankfully, Mega Lime 2 lets you go back to the pre-destroyed version of a Robot Master's stage if you missed a shiny there. It also helps you learn that yes, the new versions of the stages will also have shinies.

BUT WHO IS THIS MYSTERIOUS ROBOT MASTER WREATHED IN MENACE AND ILLUSION?

Hell if Wood Man knows.

Since, at this stage, you have access to all eight Robot Masters, it's honestly up to personal preference who you use. I'll try to give all eight a fair shake, but I find playing as Crash, Flash, and Heat most fun.

Indeed, at some points, the Robot Master of your choice simply cannot continue onwards. This happens a lot for Wood Man.

The first part of Snake Man 2: Revenge of Snake Man is pretty much the same as the outdoor segments of the original, save for that it is night time now.

Further on, we find something different. Through holes in the robot snakes, jets of flame spray out! These can be temporarily disabled with the Bubble Lead, so I switch to Bubble Man.

This turns out to be a good idea.

A very, very good idea.

Y'know how water usually makes Mega Man jump super-high? That same logic applies to the enemies here, which makes this area dangerous even for Bubble Man.

Additionally, flame jets that are underwater instead turn to constant sprays of steam, which not even the Bubble Lead can handle.

There's a few ways of getting that powerup up there. You can try (like I did) to go up there using the Bubble Lead to disarm the traps, you can show off your grade-A timing by running through with Quick Man, or...

You can freeze the whole damn thing with Flash Man.

However, the Time Stopper doesn't halt the steam jets.

So we use Heat Man. While he's not invulnerable to poisonous Dr. Pepper lavaballs, he does retain full usage of his weaponry underwater.

Looks like some of the water snakes survived Air Man's initial attack. Of course there are water snakes. WHAT MADE YOU THINK OTHERWISE?

Past that segment, we have to switch to Bubble Man (or Quick or Air, I guess) to get out of that vertical shaft.

By taking this side route, we get ourselves a new shiny!

And this takes us right to the boss doors. Wow, that was a short stage. SHOW YOUR FACE, NE'ER-DO-WELL!

Oh. That's different.

So, this is Doc Robot. In Mega Man 3, he showed up in the ruined versions of Gemini, Needle, Shadow, and Spark Man's stages, and took on the abilities of Mega Man 2 Robot Masters. As you can see, Mega Lime takes this in a different direction.

Doc Robot has Fire Man's weapon now, the Fire Storm. His main form of attack is to spam it forwards, jumping up a level each time. Thankfully, he both takes extra damage from the Bubble Lead AND it destroys his Fire Storm outright, so Bubble Man is definitely the way to go for this fight.

However, the fight changes up a bit after he gets to the top. He fires a super-concentrated, indestructible ball of fire, which lets me showcase Bubble Man's goofy injury sprite.

Once the fireball get into the walls, they start shooting out spurts of fire in a wave pattern. This means the longer you take to bring down Fire Doc, the harder it gets. After launching such a fireball, he walks to the other side and repeats his pattern.

I find that the best way to fight is to position Bubble Man closer to Fire Doc the higher up he gets, which does mean you trade hits with the concentrated fireball when he shoots it, but it also keeps you safe from everything else and does loads of damage.

Good job, Bubble Man!

However, the stage continues. And we find a grayish snake beyond. Is it a dead robot snake, or merely the shedded skin of a robot snake?

Metal Man really doesn't care because he can destroy it and that is fun.

A good chunk of the second half of Snake Man Returns is full of these snakes that can be damaged. However, stuff that interacts heavily with terrain, like Atomic Fire or Bubble Lead, won't destroy it when it touches the ground. For this reason, I go with Metal Man, since that lets me destroy only the parts I find necessary.

The cloud platforms are also here, which might hint some people to use Air Man. But I don't FEEL like it right now!

I mean, I'll still totally use them.

Because most of the enemies here are invincible, it's usually easier to just abuse the terrain to get around them, rather than fight them head-on.

I'm pretty sure taking a cloud up there doesn't get you anything.

So, as before, I ignore the enemies and just cut my way through.

Yeah, that ledge doesn't go anywhere or have anything on it. WHY NOT.

Okay fine I'll use Air Man now.

This area is loaded with boxes, but as their gray color might indicate, they are totally destructible.

Like before, the Hammer Joes aren't worth fighting with the terrain as is.

Unlike the earlier section, the Air Shooter is actually really useful for keeping those nut-and-bolt enemies out of the way.

THE NEFARIOUS BLOCK PUZZLE! IT WAS YOU ALL ALONG!

Since I'm full on E Tanks, I just top my health up before going for this one.

The puzzle itself is easy, but the trick is that the blocks are destructible, so you need to position Air Man so his Air Shooter won't destroy the blocks you want.

Just stack two blocks on top of each other...

And laugh because only Heat Man can actually jump up to the platform.

DOC ROBOT STRIKES AGAIN

The fight with Cut Doc takes place with him way the hell up over there, while cloud platforms constantly rise from the ground, and he throws the Rolling Cutter at you nonstop. He can only have one shot of it out at a time, but it hurts like crazy.

On top of that, the Rolling Cutter will also bisect the cloud platforms, sending them each a different direction.

Unsurprisingly, given the arena, Cut Doc is weak to the Air Shooter, but those destructible blocks under him are a problem for Air Man. Once they're gone, you have to get a lot closer to hit him, which means you have less time to dodge the Rolling Cutter and he gets it back faster.

The solution is to send a cloud platform under him, elevating him into your ideal range and out of his. This is actually pretty clever, I think.

So. We've got Mega Man 2 Robot Masters, fighting in Mega Man 3 stages, against a Doc Robot using Mega Man 1 weapons.

But there are only six Mega Man 1 Robot Masters normally. What is that Doc Robot up to?
  • Spark Man: Wood Man
  • Snake Man?: Air Man
  • Needle Man: Metal Man
  • Hard Man?: Crash Man, 1 vote?
  • Top Man?: Flash Man
  • Gemini Man: Bubble Man
  • Magnet Man?: Heat Man
  • Shadow Man: Quick Man

Apparently post-apocalyptic greenhouses are a thing people want to see. Okay!

Huh, it doesn't look that post-apocalyptic.

In fact, the early segments of the stage are just as pedestrian as before, with giant springy mans, dragonflies, and hopping robots all over. Although I guess dragonflies weren't a staple of Top Man's stage earlier, so maybe it's only apocalyptic for the plants?

Well, maybe something interesting will happen once we climb this ladder.

That's different. That lamp appears to be overheating.

Oh no, sparks!

While the Leaf Shield can be a good idea for stopping sparks, as is often the case with him, you have to switch to other Robot Masters for getting from point A to point C.

As for the lamps, they take a while to shoot sparks everywhere, and said sparks travel slowly, so just time it right for these areas and you'll be fine.

Up here, though, enemies are all the hell over the place as well as sparks, so having a Leaf Shield up can make this much more doable. You can also get by via Time Stopper.

Sadly, this is the end of the line for Wood Man. One of my only complaints about this game is that Wood Man, in particular, has to swap out so often to other Robot Masters. I get that the Leaf Shield is really strong, but it makes him feel so limited.

Well, that was quick. What form does the Doc Robot take today?

Wait, what exactly am I looking at here?

Okay, so someone asked if there was a catch to this romhack. The catch is that it isn't a romhack, but this fight feels like it came from one. As you can already see from the arena, this place is a mess, with the orbiting blocks moving up and down the pipe, forcing you to avoid them. Further complicating matters is the Ice Slasher, which, as you can see, destroys all projectiles that come in contact with it.

Ice Doc will jump up to the platform above once the orbiting blocks head lower, and will drop back down once they get higher.

While the other Doc Robot fights are easier with the "wrong" Robot Master, here you really do have to suck it up and use Metal Man. Fortunately, narrowing him down as not only the only feasible option, but Ice Doc's weakness, is easy to do.

For starters, the room has a ladder, which you pretty much have to use to fight him (and you really should, what with the safe spot near the base). This cuts your potential options in half. Quick Boomerangs can't shoot far enough to hit from the ladder, Crash Bombs can't hit far enough when jumping on the ground, and the Flash Buster can't abuse the holes in the Ice Slasher's trajectory.

The Metal Blade has an additional advantage on the ground, in that you can throw it diagonally downwards to bypass the Ice Slasher, though this of course only works when Ice Doc is on the ground. But yeah, this is probably one of my least favorite fights in the game.

Well, that was disappointing. Moving on.

Oh no, spiders! Or are those supposed to be ladybugs? Either way, they crawl out of the pipes and down the ladders.

Once again, the intent of the area here is foiled by using Heat Man. I will not freeze your blocks to make the jumps, sir!

You may want to, though, because this can be tricky. Heat Man or Quick Man also has an easyish time of it, though.

Personally, I save my Time Stopper for Dio Brando impersonations ONLY.

Oh, and these things. What does that counter mean?

It means explosions. These go by roughly the same increments of time as Super Mario World number platforms, save for that 0 means instasplode.

By insisting on the high road despite the top-belly robot, I get an E Tanks. Cool?

Okay enough waiting for the Time Stopper to recharge. I DEMAND SATISFACTION.

And this I get!

...Yeah okay hell no.

That part is totally doable if you're careful, but it seems like far more trouble than its worth.

Here, though, a trio of platforms that instantly explode if stepped on rise up. I also think these spikes, unlike most others, ignore mercy invincibility.

You pretty much have to Time Stopper past these.

Hey there boss door, don't mind me.

Now this is just silly. Oh well, another shiny for me!

And yeah, I'm just going to stick with Heat Man.

We fall down into the pre-boss area afterwards.

Thinking about it, Bomb Doc sounds like some kind of comic a 6 year old might ask their 20-something older brother to draw. "I will blow up your legs and you will feel better!"

Anyhow, Bomb Doc hops around a few times for giggles before jumping to one side or the other and lobbing Hyper Bombs everywhere. In both Mega Lime games, the Hyper Bomb was given a significant and necessary buff to enable it to explode on contact with a surface or enemy. Oddly enough, this made Bomb Man more effective than Elec Man.

After another bout of random hopping, bomb tops will come up from the floor. The first array has a 2-second timer, while a second set of 3 with 1 second timers arises shortly after. You quickly need to make your way to ground level, or risk taking a lot of damage.

As with Mega Man 1, Bomb Doc is vulnerable to fire attacks, namely the Atomic Fire. You have some opportunity to charge the Heat Wave during his random hopping between attacks, but while he's attacking you should stick with the Atomic Fire.

So that was Top Man Strikes Back. Kind of underwhelming, honestly. But only two Robot Masters remain, yet we have four encounters with Doc Robot to go. WHAT CAN HAPEN?

disclaimer: voting tallies are not updated because I am in between two days of working from 11 AM to midnight with about two hours free in between and also I'm pretty sure there's only one vote for each option anyway
