I'm curious--how long is a TAS for a game like Legend of Legaia expected to run? For a 50 hour game, is a good speedrun 20 hours?

And I'm caught up! And I didn't remember most of the time-travel events or the fight with Rogue, so I'm now waiting with bated breath to see how we get to the stuff I _do_ remember!

For comparison, FF8 is the longest recorded speed run, clocking in at 8 hours. Speed runners usually don't bother with RPGs unless there is some way to break the game in a way that dramatically shortens game length. For instance, FF8 has obvious exploits, FF6 has Setzer's Slot command and Dragon Warrior uses the Sleep spell to permalock the final boss. It also really, really helps if there's a way around random encounters.

(edit) Actual human players have beaten NetHack in just over 2000 turns and within two minutes (see, for example, this ttyrec). I can only imagine what a TAS could come up with

Before we head back to the present, what do you say we have another chat with the townspeople? It'll be neat to see the differences in what they say in the past and present. Not to mention that this will be the last time we can talk to Zeto, Dohati, Zora, and the Delilases, what with them being dead in the present and all.

In the castle
Guard: Did you meet with the Queen?
{No, but that's a good idea now that you mention it.} She should be in the back room. Why don't you go see her?
Guard: The Queen is beyond this point. You may pass.
King Nebular: Ruby... You there. Your name is Ruby, right? A nice name...
Guard: After the Mist, a strange type of Seru was invented below here, they say.
Guard: Prince Cort is in the underground laboratory.

Puera can't instantly kill enemies, but that is still a hell of a lot of damage. It's expensive to use (at 110 MP), but if you ever wanna just kill everything in a battle, this is the spell to use. It also has a unique magic effect at higher levels, in that it drains enemies' MP. Which is admittedly rather situationally useful, but it's pretty cool nonetheless.

I'm pretty sure that Barra is the most powerful single-target spell we have now, definitely so in the hands of Ruby. Could come in handy during a boss fight. At 85 MP, it's even kind of cheap for how powerful it is; for thirteen more MP than Kemaro we get almost a thousand more points of damage. Like the other Wind Seru, it'll even lower an enemy's SPD at higher levels, assuming it actually survives being dropped out of the sky.

And last but not least...

For slightly less MP than Puera, Slippery deals slightly less damage than it. It shares other Water Seru's AGL-lowering effects at higher levels, assuming they live through the attack, but if you've been training your attack magic you might just want to use a less-expensive-to-cast Water Seru, like Freed.

We're not quite done yet - Umber's Spirited action bar is finally high enough to let him use his final Super Art, and his Miracle Art as well. How's about we learn them both?

Used by combining Back Punch, Guillotine, and Neo Raising, Neo Static Raising is pretty damn powerful - it's almost, but not quite as long as Super Tempest, and deals around the same damage. Ending in a leaping uppercut just makes it better.

This is it - the final Art we'll be learning in the LP.

The first and most important difference between him and other bosses is that his attacks completely ignore Spirit. That's right, for the first (and only, I might add) time in the game, Spirit isn't going to do anything to help absorb damage, aside from the added chance to block.

He's really fast, too; if Umber didn't have the Speed Chain equipped, Jette would definitely get a turn before everyone else. On top of that, his combos are pretty long; I've seen him go up to nine hits once or twice, and five is the minimum he usually goes for. Due to all this nonsense, it's pretty important to keep your HP pretty high, especially in preparation for his hit-all attack.

If you manage to block Shadow Break, it'll only deal around 350 damage or so. Unblocked? We're looking at somewhere around eleven to twelve hundred. The good news is that, like Zora before him, Jette will use Shadow Break every other turn (or sometimes not just to screw with you, also like Zora).

Thanks to his somewhat definite pattern, you should be able to block Shadow Break as long as you pay attention to what Jette is doing. But the fight isn't quite so simple as that; you see...

That cloning trick in the cutscene wasn't just for show; Jette can and will clone himself at random. This isn't as bad as it sounds, though, for one simple reason:

A Jette clone can do precisely jack to harm you.

They also only have enough HP to take a character's third Hyper Art to the face before keeling over, so they won't be around long.

The real purpose of the Jette clones is to distract you from attacking the real thing. Because of this, it's really important to pay attention to where the real Jette is at all times, so you can keep piling on the damage while the clones tap you ineffectually.

If you want, you can delegate someone to clone-killing duty; this will make keeping track of the real Jette easier, as well as leave your other characters free to beat the crap out of him.

You'll need to give him everything you've got; Jette has almost 35,000 HP, so you'll want to end the fight as quickly as you can. You only have so many resources, after all.

As always, you'll know you're close when you start knocking Jette down. Something I couldn't quite screenshot is that Jette's block animation is quite strange; he breaks his body into pieces and quickly reforms it. You'll see what I mean in the video.

Just keep your cool and pay attention to what Jette is doing, and you'll succeed.

Umber's right - we've got to hurry and get to the Mist Generator as soon as we can. We'll do that later, however; I'm stopping the update here, so we can take on the other half of the Fortress next time.

Next time: Hopefully reaching the Mist Generator!

Haha wow, I'm dumb. That wasn't a two-minute run, that was a two hour run.

Anyway, this one is 2185. (Reader's digest: he stumbled on the bones floor of a pudding farmer.) TAS can't use bones files, but it can manipulate. To what degree you can manipulate is really going to determine the speed of the run.

You'd expect on the order of 10 hours for a PS1-era JRPG; I'm not sure if Legaia will be more or less than that. (A significant proportion will generally be cutscenes.)

Meanwhile, Mogri's NetHack speedrunning data is out of date; the current realtime record is 1 hour 3 minutes, and the current gametime records are 2135 with stuffed bones, and 2596 turns with no bones. (I strongly recommend watching the ttyrec for the realtime and no-bones gametime runs, if you like NetHack; you can use Jettyplay to watch ttyrecs (fun fact: I originally developed it specifically for the purpose of allowing Talking Time readers to watch NetHack games)).

And that 2185 run wasn't exactly "stumbling on" the bones of a pudding farmer; someone mentioned in #nethack that a pudding farmer had died and probably left bones, and nht actively went and sought the bones out. The life of a speedrunner…

This update is another huge one. How do you guys feel about that, by the way? I'm slightly worried I might be driving people away with how long these updates have been lately. Let me know if I could change something about how I'm presenting the events in this game to make it better-looking!

I hope you'll get used to these cave passages - we'll be going through a fair few of them in this update.

That pipe is huge... it must run to the Mist Generator at the top.

As you might have guessed, the second half of the Fortress is all about steadily climbing to the top.

The pipe-structure turns transparent while you're walking past it, so you don't have to worry about seeing where you're going.

Just how high up are we, I wonder? At this rate it'll take quite a while to get back to the entrace once we destroy the Mist Generator...

It's around here that Iosa Lv2's show up. They don't last very long, but they do have a pretty annoying attack:

It works pretty often, too! Kind of annoying.

Ah, a fork. We'll want to head to the right first.

Another one of these, huh? Eh, I'll probably just sell it again.

Ah, Puera Lv2's. Their Death Game attack is slightly more worrisome, since there's a higher chance for "X Character Dies" cards to show up, and lower chances for friendly cards; hell, "Both Recover HP" cards might not show up at all.

Rockin'.

At least we're making progress.

Let's hope this elevator leads to the top of this place; all this climbing is making me dizzy.

Wherever we are, I think we're close to the Mist Generator. We'll have to press onward to find out for sure.
