The issue of music being removed/changed in videogames is unnacceptable.

It's not just videogames actually. I am, through a combination of OCD and sheer stubbornness, unable to watch House MD anymore, and I fucking love House. Here's the thing though, every single episode of House ABSOLUTELY MUST open with Teardrop by Massive Attack or I actually, quite literally, consider it completely unwatchable. That song is perfect. Flawless. Iconic. It sets the tone of every episode with absolute purity. I love it. It is part of the experience.

But because of stupid big business lawyer bullshit I am practically denied that experience. At best I can track down a rare and increasingly expensive set of DVDs.

In similar vibes I now regret little in my life more than selling my PS2 copies of the GTA 3 trilogy. Not just because the PS4 versions I downloaded are god awful buggy messes with voice lines and music cutting out constantly, but because they literally have songs from the soundtrack missing. Because of more big business lawyer bullshit. Even if I try to play GTA5, the songs you hear on the radio (at least in the online mode) are no longer the songs I heard in the game when I first played it. I can't remember the last time I heard that Bobby Brown song from the Ghostbusters 2 soundtrack.

I hate it. I hate it so much. When you make art involving music, that music should be a part of the art forever. I don't care that MTV played fast and loose with rights for the soundtrack to Daria. That music was as much a part of the experience as the writing and characters. And now that experience is gone. Denied to the world. Why? Because of stupid big business lawyer bullshit.

While I'm spitting impotent hot takes I might as well mention that while I love the Mandalorian it is inexcusable for Disney to well, be what it is and it should have been roasted by anti-trust and monopoly laws decades ago. And Mickey Mouse should be in the public domain. I say that as a theoretic creative who wants to make money off his art. Fuck'em. I'm tired of selfishness and greed driving art just because society somehow decided for all of us that pursuing money is the only thing that matters by necessity.

I'm not even a GTA superfan, but loading up the Vice City "Definitive Edition" and not hearing Billy Jean when I got in the first car just felt wrong on many, many levels. Also doesn't take long driving around to realize how many songs are missing because you were used to hearing them in a certain order. And they didn't replace them with any new songs...just cut them out entirely.

It's particularly frustrating because it's not just songs that were popular at the time. Often they're songs that in some way thematically fit the game, establish the tone and characterization of it all. It's not gangsta rap but taking Killing In The Name Of out of the absolute fuck the police energy of San Andreas is gutwrenching.

And am I correct in that they completely gutted the soundtrack of Sonic 3? Enjoy another piece of your past being irretrievably destroyed for no good reason at all. It's like Alzheimer's, but it's affecting the literal material world.

Kazin

did i do all of that?

It's stuff like this that I'm glad I've largely moved to PC as my gaming platform of choice, because I can at least usually mod songs and stuff back in (did it with Sonic Origins on release date for Sonic 3 lol). It's super, super annoying that you have to do that, but at least it makes the "definitive" edition feel right.

What?! What song did they put in its place?

The DVD or Blu-Ray version of Daria is just not worth watching as none of the music from the original run of the show is there. I don't even know if you can find a version of the show as-aired. Made me so mad when I realized it.

Ironically House in Europe had a different theme for season 1, so for me Teardrop is out of place

But yeah. Get the original soundtrack in its entirety or don't bother

It took a really long time for Quantum Leap fans to get a version with the correct music, the first digital releases all had stock music in place of Ray Charles, etc.

But the real offender here is Crazy Taxi. Any Crazy Taxi port without the Epitaph Records soundtrack is a false prophet.

If a musician can't afford the best lawyers then they didn't want those royalties anyway.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade games.

Incidentally, things aren't sounding good on that front for the Cowabunga Collection, but I guess we'll see.

What always got me there is that most of the music was made specifically for those games. Might have arranged some stuff from the cartoon, but it wasn't the same tracks.

Oof. Shredder's Revenge has great music but their version of the cartoon theme tune surely pleases nobody

I found this on Internet Archive, if it helps.

The picture looks too good to be home recordings of the originals, but anyone want to confirm if this worth watching? I don't know much about the show to say myself.

I’m hoping modern stuff is more future proofed for this kind of thing. Like, surely FFXV will keep its Florence and the Machine songs?

I’m in awe of whoever did the legal footwork needed to get The Muppet Show on Disney+ with like 95% of the music intact.
