The dog's meow: it's The Good Life

Long since announced and Kickstarted, Hidetaka Suehiro's newest is finally on the cusp of release, launching on most current platforms on October 15th. It has been such a long time coming that Swery put out two other games in the interim, in fact. I would say that I'm "hyped" for it except that's never what I feel about his games; I dread them instead. I have never enjoyed a single one, as they consistently let me down in the same ways. Still, I'm always interested in them because they're equally on the verge of landing on something really worthwhile, invoking a real desire of wanting them to be good. Swery always goes to the same well in settings, themes and tone, and doesn't look to break from precedent here either and some of those wearying staples seem as present as ever, so the question also remains: can we take him and the game at face value and at its titular word?

What's Shenmue?
I've never been particularly interested in SWERY's games, as they always seemed too self-consciously eccentric to me; but The Good Life nevertheless caught my eye. Compared to his earlier games, it seems relatively grounded: the mystery is massively downplayed in all the marketing, treating it more like a life-sim game in rural England, and even the thing where the townsfolk turn into animals doesn't seem to be treated as particularly odd. I find that mundane approach to be, ironically, a lot more interesting than something that calls attention to itself. So I'm cautiously optimistic.

I actually backed this on Kickstarter, but I haven't kept up with its development, so I'm as surprised as anyone to learn it's just around the corner. Guess I'll be playing this sooner than later.

I kickstarted this one and have just been waiting around to see how it turns out since then. I have few preconceptions and fewer expectations of any sort at this point, so at least if it's no good I won't be particularly disappointed. I do hope it's good, though! What I remember about this from the original trailers and bits and pieces from kickstarter updates makes it seem pretty charming.
