Because everybody makes mistakes. Sometimes hilarious ones.

No Safe Passage spell, no healing items, no prayer ring, and the only MP left were a few of Cannock's to Evac the heck out of dodge. But noooo, there's treasure right there and I must have it!

Share your own hilarious screw-ups.

As a kid I overwrote my Link to the Past save when I had managed to get to Ganon's Tower. Was not a happy 9 nine year old.

Sort of similarly, I restarted Link’s Awakening when I got stuck in like the sixth or seventh dungeon because I thought I must have done something wrong somewhere and made the game impossible (I grew up on a diet of Sierra adventure games). Turned out I needed to bomb a wall I hadn’t bombed, I think.

Oh! Was it the one that the hint it was bomb-able was a L shape of tiles going from a door to it? Grade school me was stuck on that one too.

Never finished Da Minish Cap because there's this one area with a broken bridge. It turns out you're supposed to throw a bomb over it, or something. It's like the shortest Zelda ever made and I never finished it because of that one thing.

A lot of mine are just goofing off intentionally. Trying to jump over/go through barriers I know shouldn't, giving the wrong item to someone just to see what they'd say, nudging NPCs into dumb spots, trying to trick enemies into dumb traps/situations I've set up, etc.

I've told this story before, but on my first playthrough of Final Fantasy IV I somehow managed to accidentally unequip and then discard Cecil's sword on the way to the Mist Cave. Rather than just start over and re-do the ~45 minutes of progress I'd made, ten year old me decided it was smarter to press on and Final Fight my way through every encounter until I found his next sword in the waterfall caves. You've never been so happy to open a treasure chest as I was that day.

When playing the original X-Wing, I was somehow unaware that there is a key you can press to immediately redirect weapon energy into your shields, and thought that the shields could only be slowly charged by themselves over time. This made some of the missions exceptionally difficult, but I pressed on until I reached the Death Star trench run, which seemed damn near impossible. After many frustrating failures, I happened to press the previously mentioned key by accident, and suddenly everything became clear.

On the one hand, it made me feel stupid, but on the other it made me feel like a skilled player for getting this far in an unintentional Hard Mode.

in breath of the wild i fucked off to explore instead of going in the direction the game told me to at the beginning, so i ended up missing the inventory upgrade guy and the camera for a long time

I have one for BotW too: I didn't figure out the clues to the right path in the Lost Woods and just got through it by trial and error.

Got up to the 98th level of Mt. Battle in Pokémon Colosseum as a kid and then suddenly got an irresistible impulse to reset the Gamecube. I don't even have a good reason for it, I just did.

I'm pretty sure I lucked into the right path in The Lost Woods too, lol

I was playing a third person shooter, I think Spec Ops: The Line, and I didn’t realise that when you went into a turret you could hold a button to zoom in. As a result, the turret bits were super hard until I got totally stuck on one, looked up a video online of someone doing it, and learned I could aim.

In the first level of Dishonored, I decided that I wanted to play the game stealthily. I clobbered the (maybe?) first guard and pushed him into an open sewer to cover my tracks. Knocking him unconscious would have been enough, but dropping the poor guy into water caused him to drown and die (which I only realized much later). That one guard remained the only one I killed on my playthrough, so I didn't get the fully murderless ending. Oops!
