Scars Above: a modern Metroid (alien planet 'em up)

Saw this gameplay trailer and thought it looked cool. Reminds me of what Metroid might have looked like if it was conceived today.

Scars Above stars Kate Ward, a mission specialist and astrobiologist with a background in engineering. She’s a part of the SCAR team (Sentient Contact Assessment and Response) in the game.

Game Director Ivan Zorkic at Mad Head Games talked about the setting of the game, saying: “an alien object appears near-earth and a team of astronauts are sent to explore it. However for some reason this results in an event which causes them to be transported to an alien planet.”

I remember seeing this gameplay showcase earlier this week and being completely distracted by that janky world premiere chyron. I thought there may be something wrong with my TV after moving it…

Strong resemblance to Returnal. Gun play looks more like Dead Space, and there's no roguelike elements (that I can see), but yeah... very reminiscent of Returnal.

I think I would prefer something like this. As much as I love Returnal, the RNG stuff on each run was heavy-handed - it could make or break you early - and the difficulty is a tad too rich for my blood. I've said before that I wish Returnal was a little more traditional Metroidvania and this game looks more like what I was talking about.

Yeah, the themeing of the world and starting situation very much brings to mind Returnal. But its a normal game that lets you explore a world and collect stuff.

As an audio engineer, I was immediately bothered by how the main character makes the same footstep sounds on the spaceship as on the planet.

As a video game player, this has a lot of ingredients that I like, so I'll have to keep an eye on it!
