I Tried To Play:

Battle length as noted by Poster above for Bravely Default comes to mind, for me. I want to finish Octopath 1 but the time commitment of the minor fights is asking more than I'd prefer.

I'm ashamed to say I tried to play Tunic and dropped it after a couple hours. I know, I know! There's SO much to like there, from the charming aesthetics to the "oh shit, I can do THAT?" realizations as you uncover more pages of the manual. But I need a little more structure than that in my games, and being set loose in a world where I don't even know what the rules are was kind of overwhelming. Too many times I was left wondering if I was making slow progress or just futilely bashing my head against a dead end or an area I wasn't supposed to be in yet. It felt a little draining to play rather than exciting.

It seems like a rare gem and a gaming experience I'd like to be able to enjoy, so I do intend to circle back to it at some point and give it another shot. Maybe something will click the second time around.

Octopath is one that I kind of bounced off of. I must have just chosen the wrong time to try it, because I was enjoying the 4-5 hours I put into it alright, but when I looked at how long each of the chapters was taking and how many chapters there were, the time commitment kind of boggled my mind and I ended up putting it down (at the time, the idea was to go back and finish it later... Maybe I still will, but realistically, probably not).

Bravely Default was one I enjoyed and played the hell out of - you can make the random battles pretty snappy if you take full advantage of the titular brave/default systems, and it gives you so many tools for tweaking difficulty and frequency of encounters.

But I started in on the immediate sequel (the un-numbered one) and just kind of petered out a short way in, and then never picked up 2 at all. Partly this is just me making less time for long games, but I dunno, despite loving it originally I just haven't felt the urge to go back.

Throw me under the Tried To Play Bravely Default bus too because I also fizzled out. In spite of it on paper being everything I want from a Jrpg. I don't think I even got very far.

There are better games to play under both the Bravely and Octopath banners at this point. Namely, the ones with "2" in the title.

In the same boat. I liked what I played of it but then I sat it down one day and never came back to it. And now it's been long enough I feel like I need to restart to make sure I didn't miss anything or whatever.

hard for me to think of a game i disliked more strongly than bravely for the sequel, to the point that i've not really come very close to even considering trying to play anything later associated with asano, lol. i'm sure there's stuff that's bored me more but nothing that's left the same sting of permanent annoyance. i liked agnes. that's about my whole list. i feel like the oft praised "0 encounter rate" feature wouldn't feel so revelatory to people if aspects of the game like random battles and dungeons were better designed in the first place

i'm a huge yasunori nishiki fan and for now i continue to stick to just listening to the octopath music. suits me fine

I have gotten bogged down at some point in all three Bravelys (though I did eventually complete II at least) but find the Octopaths much snappier. Maybe some of it comes down to audio/visual presentation, but the break + boost system just feels so much more satisfying than brave + default. The glass shattering on a boss followed by Castti growling "No mercy, only pain!" It speaks to my lizard brain.
