Glazed and confused: The cartoon chaos of Donut Dodo

ArugulaZ

Fearful asymmetry
Lately I've been spending a lot of time with a recent Steam release called Donut Dodo. It's a fixed screen platformer that borrows liberally from the arcade hits of the early 1980s... principally Donkey Kong, but other titles like Pac-Man, Bomb Jack, and Popeye as well. The key difference is that while many pre-crash platform games are on the sluggish side, Donut Dodo is fast and frantic, with the hero sprinting up ladders in a split second and the titular dodo nervously pacing at the top of the screen, spitting fireballs and laying eggs to hamper your progress.

There's a lot that stands out about Donut Dodo. The animation is excellent, with mice enthusiastically bouncing along the floor like Slinkies, and the music is better still, a collection of kinetic cartoon melodies that are a perfect match for the game's frantic action. Best of all, unlike a lot of arcade throwbacks, Donut Dodo sticks the landing, with smart level designs that make good use of the lead character's athleticism and encourage you to lead onscreen threats into dead ends, giving you just enough time to grab that elusive donut hanging in a tricky corner of the playfield.

In short, if you're a fan of old-school arcade games and the dozens of lesser-known titles on MAME still aren't enough to satisfy that hunger, give Donut Dodo a spin... you're sure to enjoy it.
