I literally have played one match of this game and I'd bet money like 1% of this forum has even touched it, but at least it's getting legendary Halo map Blood Gulch in a new update. And also Master Chief and stuff.

Really I'm just glad Blood Gulch is getting new life, because I consider it one of those legendary game maps like de_dust or Peach's Castle that deserves at least some measure of reverence. I wish Epic would include maps from their former, other blockbuster series Unreal Tournament - that was how they made their name before most of Fortnite's players were born, and I think UT99/UT04 are probably better games to boot.

This sounds like the start of a Blood Gulch thread more than a Fortnite thread :p

As I understand it, the Blood Gulch map was recreated by a player in Creative mode, and Epic is highlighting it in the normal matchmaking options while the Master Chief skin is on sale. So any map could be recreated in Creative mode. The game still has some Facing Worlds posters hidden in buildings here and there; maybe someone has made that.

Fortnite! I like Fortnite! I play it pretty regularly on my Switch (I need Gyro aim to be competent vs. control stick alone) these days, and have for... two and a half years? (That's the problem with seasons, you can track time with them.) The game scratches the same itch that a lot of rogue-likes do for me: dropping into a session with nothing, and scrambling to pick up random equipment to survive, and learning the environment annd how to navigate different situations with the tools you have. You level up!

All my real life friends hate Fortnite. It's the game I'll play but never tell you about. It’s big, dumb fun.

My new favorite thing is being Master Chief and driving along the roads in his lil' warthog like I'm serious, just to see if anyone will find me funny. It's very productive.

Me and some friends have gotten back into Fortnite recently and this season is really solid. Been playing it on and off since late 2017, and I think this might be the best the game has ever been imho.

I feel like things have been improving since last year's Chapter 2 "reboot". Trying to play the game before then felt like trying to catch up with a speeding train on foot. Jumping in as a newcomer with all the zany fluff they added was a little overwhelming. The tweaks with Chapter 2 and beyond have done a lot to make the game feel more balanced and fun.

I'm still terrible at building though. If someone builds a tower right in front of me, all I can do is stand there and keep shooting. But sometimes that tactic actually works!

Oh, people will find you funny:

I heard some fans didn't like the Marvel season, but I played it pretty steadily and really liked it. The looser quest structure of the current season is really good though. I miss my favorite burst rifles, but they've left me my harpoon gun, so I'm still happy.

Some of my co-workers play Apex, and I think Respawn makes really good shooters, but Fortnite is just more... Fun? I've got quests like "Destroy mailboxes" and "Find car parts". I think people who don't play the game don't realize that it's actually a big open world game that a shooter takes place in.

I've been meaning to give this a try for a while now. How much is Master Chief in real money? Or are v-bucks earned in-game? And is he a limited time thing?

Also interested in grabbing Penny, if I wind up sticking with it.

Expect to give Epic $20 USD. The skin is 1,500 V-Bucks, but the package of the skin, glider, hammer and warthog emote is 2,600. $8 gets 1,000 V-Bucks, while 20 gets you 2,800 V-Bucks. (These prices are on PC and Switch, not sure if they changed the prices on other consoles in their Fuck Apple campaign)

Master Chief is a limited offer, but not sure how long. Kratos was in the shop for a week or so, so I imagine MC will be the same. (The shop rotates inventory every day, so there's an 8 hour countdown until the next refresh, but he'll just be in the offerings for the next shop day). Stuff comes back to the shop all of the time, so I imagine MC will be back, but it could be weeks or months before the rotation comes around again.

Almost tempted to boot the game up just to get the Halo stuff if it's limited edition. I still don't play it very often.

From the time of this post, looks like there's still 22 hours left to grab the Master Chief pack.

This is actually the first character pack I've ever bought. I've been able to get by collecting a lot of cool stuff with just the Battle Pass.

Most people are guessing that Master Chief will be in the shop until Thursday (one week after he went up), so don't need to rush to grab it immediately.

The Battle Pass is why I very rarely spend money on skins in the shop, since I have a lot of skins from past Battle Passes, but I did pick up the warthog traversal emote, because it's pretty funny on everybody (especially John Wick with holographic wings)

Is there no way to earn the money in-game? Or would it just take a really long time?

And is Thursday it for good? Or just one of those cycles Lakupo mentioned?

Crap, I haven't even had time to play...

There isn't really a way to earn V-Bucks in-game. There's a couple free battle pass tiers that give V-Bucks, but the majority are paid tiers so they're more of a rebate. Save the World mode still gives free V-Bucks to players, but only people who have bought the founders pack.

I can guarantee that Master Chief will come back to the shop in the future after it leaves Thursday. I don't know when it will be back, could be two months (end of the season), could be 4-5, but the shop has been redesigned to feature more stuff at once, so there are lots of opportunities to feature these kinds of promotions repeatedly.

Don't drop money on a game you don't know if you'll like. Play the game first, the skin will be back. (if anything, the battle pass rewards are the "this stuff will not be back" thing to FOMO over, but it's all a UX dark pattern anyway)

^I agree 100% with Lakupo. I wouldn't worry about the Battle Pass or V-Bucks for your first couple of weeks while you feel out the game (or maybe even months, like me). Any rewards you get for leveling up can be retroactively earned by buying the Battle Pass later on, so you've got nothing to lose! (except when the season ends, then you've got EVERYTHING to lose)

EDIT: LAKUPO you were right! I just watched the Master Chief counter go down to zero then refresh back to 23 hours. What a dirty marketing tactic!

Thinking back on it, Fortnite really does seem like a deviously crafted microtransaction system aimed at sucking up parents' credit cards, grafted to a decent game. Kids being bullied because they don't have any cosmetics is dumb as hell, back in MY day you got what the game shipped with and you LIKED it, but kids are gonna be kids - and at the end of the day it means more purchases made.
