If you want to know how to recruit Byleth-

I don't know for certain how the Blue Lions route goes since it's the one I haven't played, but I assume recruiting them works the same as Deer and Eagles- in the mission against them where you are warned that your actions will heavily impact the story, you need to ignore Arval when he tells you to attack Byleth and instead leave them alone. You must complete the mission before Byleth returns to the level's boss. If you do so and Byleth is still on the field, the mission will end immediately afterward and you wont' fight Jeralt, and instead both of them will join your army.

Thanks! I think I just had bad luck on the Blue Lions route, the second the ambush thing was announced they'd found Byleth so I must have had a character inconveniently located in that stronghold. Apparently each route is a little different and you do have to have certain strategies enabled.

I wish I'd realized that the characters you have the option to unlock with reknown are only for the auxiliary battles, that's disappointing even though it wouldn't make sense for them to be around story-wise. Oh well I have more reknown than I know what to do with anyway.

Beat Golden Deer. I really didn't like that path at all story-wise and the characters didn't really get any better. I did recruit Byleth and enjoyed that aside which explained a bit more but still not a lot.

I'm going to do Edelgard's just to see how it plays out but think I might just drop it down to easy and barrel through all the non-plot battles with Vanguard whistles.

And triple post because all three paths down. I'm so lucky this game came out when I was recovering from surgery, it needed just enough brainpower that it kept me entertained and feeling like I was doing things.

The gameplay is great, the main character is good, but there was essentially no resolution of what Arval is or why any of it matters. I did the like the Paralogue where you get to play as them back in the past but thought there would be some actual plot or something... nope. It's kind of a bummer that this game is overall a "bad ending" for Fodlan, I saw an article that said the developers didn't want this game to overshadow the main one so no one's ending had a better outcome than in the main game by design.

Still, tons of fun and highly recommended.
