The people who made well-regarded brawler that I haven't played, Streets of Red, are getting a crack at Double Dragon. I'm an easy mark, but it looks fun.

Double Dragon leaned super-deformed as early as the first arcade game--big heads, bigger arms--and certainly did so in its most known, played and liked run on the NES, so this doesn't seem like a huge departure with that context.

The developer's previous game doesn't instill confidence--dreadful aesthetic, conceptually plain, way too "remember this?" nostalgia-indulgent--but Double Dragon as a series is in a position where relative to its historical stature it's probably one of the most boring beat 'em up lineages I can think of... so experimentation with whatever direction is as good a plan as anything. Marian and Matin in this feel like the developers just got done binging City Hunter, so you know... perhaps they're just diversifying the series's fundamental sexism and litany of inspirations.

Apprehensive about it after the trailer but I'll give it a shot.

Only semi-related, but I think Double Dragon Neon is literally the only Switch game I've ever seen that has never once received a discount since it was listed. I may finally bite the bullet and pay 15 bucks again.

I'm not losing any sleep over the art style, but its not my cup of tea.

Shredder's Revenge already has a slightly chibi art style (April and Casey look smaller than usual).

The chibi art style feels like a cheaper (not cheap) way to do art. I assume developing smaller character pixel art is cheaper than making fully proportioned character pixel art. I assume someone will make the argument that this series has roots to Kunio-kun, and therefore its justified or intentional.

My strongest memories of Double Dragon are of the arcade and NES games, which have more realistic character proportions.

That being said, if reviews are good I will likely play it. I play a fair number of coop games with my sister. We have played River City Girls, Shredders Revenge and Dragon's Crown.

Hoping it will be good - it does look like a cheaper version of Shredder's Revenge, but if it plays well it really won't matter.

One thing I noticed on the character art -- not the sprites, but the close-up type stuff...

It's a bonus, but I'll be honest, I like the games where she gets fridged, too.

I hope it comes to Switch Online, just so more people can play it. It's so good.
