I'm near the end of Digimon Story: Cybersleuth, the first game of the complete edition on Steam. Before that one, I had played World 3 and a DS game (Dawn or Dusk, I think). CS is clearly my favourite from the three.

I'm at the end of chapter 19 now, and just doing all the jobs, before going into what looks like the finale dungeon. My team is Lilithmon (one-shots everything), Rosemon BM (one-shots everything that isn't killed by Lilithmon) and Beelzemon. I love Rosemons design since I saw it in World 3, so that one was clear. And I fell in love with Beelzemon through the Tamers TV show. Then I learned that there is a Digimon with the name Lilith, which settled that. That said, I put Beelzemon on the bank, until I can develop him into his BM form, his regular form is clearly way weaker than my other two mons. Probably because his signature move isn't piercing. For now, the third place in my team is taken by Omnimon Zwart, Omnimons black counterpart. Just 12 more level, and maybe a bit training, Beelzemon.

I'm honestly not sure if Rosemon BM and Lilithmon are overpowered, or if I am supposed to have these pierching moves. The bosses are mostly trivial, accept that Lilithmon isn't very robust, and can easily be oneshotted by a strong attack. No big deal, I have more than enough items, and Rosemon can heal all the damage, but still. Looks like my team is mainly made out of glass cannons. And it's no complaint, I like that the game is easy.

I do have two complaints. First, the dungeon design is really bad and boring. Everything looks the same and is just a confusing teleportation dungeon. Or they would be confusing, if they were not so small. I just wished they would have used the fact that this is the internet, and had designed something that is at all memorable. It looks cool, but all so lame and samey.

My second complaint is that every female character, human or human-shaped Digimon, is drawn for maximum grossness. It's really irritating and annoying, and I wished this otherwise great game hadn't this problem.

To end on a positive note, I like that many of the quests are just about a Digimon wanting to take care of their humans, who behave weird. Like the girl that is on a diet, so her Digimon gives me a job to get a bone, so he can make some ramen. Adorable.

I'm in the earlier stages of Cybersleuth and agreed on everything you've said that isn't end-of-game specific. The dungeons are boring and the girls'/women's character designs are at best eyeroll-worthy (including the girl MC, sadly). It isn't a new thing to integrate the internet, mythology and urban legends, but I like how it's done in this game.

There's the usual weird monster-collecting game disconnect: in the story you love and respect your 'mons, but the gameplay gives you the ability to destroy them to level up other ones.

I think I have a PS2 version of Digimon (one of the Digimon Worlds maybe?). I'll have to see if that's still around here.

did their best!
I think almost everyone playing Cybersleuth is going to stumble into a Digimon with piercing moves, honestly, especially since a lot of the top-tier anime Digimon have them. WarGreymon and BlackWarGreymon both have a piercing move, for instance.

taxonomically dubious.
digimon games.

the anime side of the digimon franchise looked promising for a moment there back at the beginning of the year, when the first episode of the adventure reboot came out Pretty Okay, but the rest so far has not really grabbed me. v-pets are cool as always, but cost $$$. i am currently lying despondent on the floor, making big ol soulful eyes vaguely westward and hoping my vibes will reach director habu somehow and bring his crew good luck in the making of digimon survive, which is basically going to own even if it falls a bit flat.

And, after nearly 50 hours, the final boss has fallen. My main team was completely overpowered, non of the endgame bosses were any threat. On normal, anyway, no idea how that would have turned out on hard. Also had a bunch of very strong mons on the side of the team, Omnimon Zwart and Seraphimon being pretty powerful too.

The superbosses from the endgame quests were a different matter. Most of them have attacks that just dealt damage that one-shotted most of my mons. But the simple solution was to just revive the fallen ones while the bench mons would take the next attacks. I guess there is also strategy that you could employ, with stat-ups and -downs? I don't know, because I never used these abilities. The battle system seems pretty weak - either I dominated battles or was dominated - but it's very possible that this is due to me playing on normal and having a super-strong team.

I feel the urge to fill up that digi-dex thing, so I guess I will do some more training and grinding - shouldn't be too bad, now that I can grind against mega-level digimon. But I will probably soon switch to something else.

Also, digimon survive looks pretty interesting. Digimon looks pretty much perfect for a strategy-rpg, being able to bring more than three digimon into a fight that way.

Yeah, it's strange, and feels more like an SMT thing. Which is probably the inspiration, in some way, like other parts of the game seem to be too? That said, I completely ignored it, and didn't even remember it, until this post.

I'm, of course, curious: What's your team at the moment, and do you have a team for the endgame in mind?

Since I'm on ch. 6 or so, I'm not at the point of needing to take my decisions very seriously. I divvy up my party as evenly as possible between cube, virus, and droplet (yeah, I know that isn't what they're called). Preference to 'mons that look like animals or dinosaurs, and don't look like poo.... Maybe in a couple dozen hours I'll be able to give you a less slipshod answer. My favorite so far is an armored tyrannosaur, just 'cause it looks cool.

Okay, now that I'm a little further in: Birdramon and Leomon! Birdramon is cool looking and super fast (comparatively), and Leomon is a great melee attacker. No clue what my endgame team might look like, but I suspect that one of them will be a birb

I haven't used them, but I know them from the anime. If you like Leomon, he seems to be one of the more popular ones, and has quite a few megaforms. I don't know much about Birdramon, but it looks really cool. Badass birds are always a nice choice.

BTW, if you are ever looking for future forms, evolution conditions or similar stuff, grindosaur.com has a ton of info about all the cyber sleuth digimon. Ignore it, as long as you have fun with trying random stuff, I just mention it in case you need something like it.

Yeah, I'm definitely of the "try random stuff as long as it works, and if it stops working, THEN go to online resources for help" school. I did look up how to build CAM and ABI a chapter or two in, since they're a not-uncommon requirement even for some early digivolutions (sp?). Sometimes it's hard to tell if they expect you to have played several of these games before and know all the basic mechanics, or if they think they're straightforward enough that they don't need to be tutoralized. Incorrect in my case, either way...
