Death Stranding: if Spirits Within was about carrying boxes

I'm playing for the first time and finished the cutscene with Guillermo del Toro. This is Kojima's best looking game on a technical level. It's also his artiest game by far. The atmosphere reminds me of Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within of all things.

I'm playing this on PC and it's playable, usually the frame rate is pretty good, but I'm getting a lot of stuttering. If anyone's interested I can give a list of specs and settings.

I completed the first delivery that had me make use of ladders and ropes, so that's fun.

I discovered the stuttering was caused by turning on FreeSync, which is really disappointing because FreeSync is supposed to reduce stutter! This is the only PC game I've played that works this way. I posted about this in the game's Steam forum and in a message to 505 Games. Still waiting for a reply. The stutter is tolerable without FreeSync but it's definitely better in games with similar frame rates that work well with it.

I stopped playing a few hours after starting many months ago. But I wanted to see everything in this game so I watched this Let's Play. I sped through most of the gameplay at 16X (with a plugin that lets Chrome play videos that fast) and watched the cutscenes at 1.5X to 2X.

My impressions haven't changed much. It's Kojima's strangest game, very well produced, but not super fun. Glad I caught my glimpses, anyway.

I liked Death Stranding a lot. I also like Sprits Within a lot. For me a lot of the joy was derived in setting up zip lines to create efficient delivery routes. Setting up routes that previously took a long time turned into quick trips once the network was setup. I particularly liked setting up zip lines in mountainous areas.

I also like the zen activity of returning to a base, taking a shower and listening to Asylums for the Feeling.

I thought the boss battles with Cliff were pretty good as well. I found them to be very tense.

My biggest problem with the game came from the combat. There is a story line reason that you don't kill people because it creates and or attracts BTs. In MGS games you have the option of going for a no kill run. In DS its practically a requirement.

However the combat in MGS is so good and so fun, that I found myself missing the MGS sniping and firefights in DS.

Also was it me or did the map that crosses the entire United States feel smaller than what it would actually take to cross the US?

Its a game I think about after I put it down; which to me is the sign of a great game.
