City of Heroes: Further memoirs of an urban vigilante

A few years ago, there was some hubbub going on about various fan-run servers for the discontinued superhero MMORPG City of Heroes (which is technically two games, "City of Heroes" and "City of Villains", though they're set in the same online world). At that time, I wasn't very tempted to start playing it again, because of the drama that was apparently going on, because I wasn't sure which of the competing servers I should choose, and because it seemed a little too complicated to set up. However, there was recently news that one of these fan servers (technically a group of servers), City of Heroes: Homecoming, has recieved the blessing and legal permission of the game's current IP holder, NCSoft. Looking at the Homecoming website, I found that the registration process and installation had now been streamlined, and I couldn't resist the temptation to get back into one of my favorite old games. Especially since it's now completely free to play.

I honestly haven't played that many MMORPGs over the years, but I get the impression that the overall gameplay of CoH is pretty standard fare, with fighting enemies, going on missions, teaming up with other players and creating guilds (sorry, "Super Groups"), etc. As I understand it, there were a few aspects of the game that were considered innovative back in the day, such as the use of instanced areas for missions, but by modern standards it might be considered a little primitive. The graphics are decent but not spectacular, there's no voice acting and no complex, emotionally charged storylines to go through.

What the game does have, however, is one of the best character creators of all time. The main focus is of course on creating costumed superheroes, but it has plenty of options for all kinds of character appearances. Best of all, in Homecoming the various costume pieces that you originally had to unlock through playing are now all available from the start. I'm especially happy that you don't have to get to level 10 to be allowed to wear a cape.

I've spent many hours already just creating different fun-looking characters, watched them run around in the city for a little while, and then went on to create something else. And it's really fun just to hang out at the starting point and look at what other players have come up with. If you want to try out the Homecoming servers, I suggest playing on the one named "Everlasting". It's the unofficial roleplaying server, but even if you're not interested in roleplaying, I find that it's the place where people are the most creative with creating interesting characters with interesting costumes.

I've mostly started this thread to write about interesting experiences in the game and posting fun screenshots, and I encourage everyone else to do the same. To start with, allow me to present my "main" characters, in a somewhat chronological order of creation:

Gargoyle-Girl is my new version of the character ("The Gargoyle") I played on the official servers back in the day. She's got skin made of concrete and hits bad guys fists of stone!

Another one of my old characters I decided to re-create is Kandykane, inspired by acrobatic and "crazy" superheroes such as The Creeper. He mainly fights with martial arts and the occasional flip-kick.

I haven't played much on the villain side yet, but the first character I created there was The Golden Age Gargoyle. He's a rough 1930s vigilante with a mean right hook, who was transported through time to the present and discovered that his conservative views and generally unpleasant personality made him have more in common with the bad guys than the good guys.

The character that I have actually played the most with so far is Princess Pop. It's just so darn fun to run around in a bright, sparkling and colorful costume and defeat enemies with the power of song, especially when I can charm bad guys into attacking each other. The fact that I've gotten lots of compliments from other players for the costume helps too, of course. Sometimes I don't even go out fighting villains, but just stand around and use the various dance emotes, trying to attract as many other players as possible into a dance party.

Go. Hunt. Kill skuls.

Big memories of this one.

In high school my two best friends got hard into MMOs starting with Everquest. I couldn't really get into the genre (and also I didn't get a debit card that I could charge the subscription), but back in 2003-2005, before discord and a lot of social media I remember I'd pick up the games just to sit around and chat with them. It was fun in Star Wars Galaxies, but it was _great_ in city of heroes. The game itself did have some unique structure that I remember, like the activatable buffs during combat (I think they were called inspirations?). IIRC it was the first game to do the sidekick system where you could team up with anyone of any level and it'd bring you somewhat close to theirs so you could play together and still make your own progress.

I remember my friend getting SO pissed at me because he went AFK to watch Justice League so I used the slow ass level 5 hover ability to go to the top of the map and then I teleported him to me where he plummeted into some mobs and to his death. Shortly after they officially made it so you had to opt in to get teleported by a teammate.

I'm sure a lot of the tedium is gone now, but I do remember the XP debt system getting pretty oppressive once you were beyond level 20, I never got much further than that. I also felt the game itself and the setting was pretty awesome. The vhazilok in particular were an awesome enemy group. I never had the patience to get my characters high level, I'd typically reroll once I unlocked the big travel power (level 20?). Too bad champs online just didn't feel close.

I actually got screenshots from back then, March 2005. Eerleeri was a name that came out of a Star Wars name generator when I needed to make a name for a Rodian, but it sounded strange enough to be for this HellGirl type character too.

Glad the homecoming server is working out!

Excellent screenshot!

Yes, the Inspirations is a fun system that allows you to boost yourself to take on otherwise difficult enemies. Since you only have a limited amount of slots for them, and you pick up new ones pretty regularly, you're encouraged to use them often.

The way the game works now, you can actually get a fast travel power (flight, high jumping, teleportation or super speed) as early as level 4 or thereabouts.

Anyway, here's the funniest gimmick character I've encountered so far:

He was just sitting still in Atlas Park and banging the drum the whole time. One of my favorite memes:

One slightly awkward aspect of the game is that when you're a high enough level, you don't get any notable experience by beating up enemies that are too weak. The awkward part of this is due to the superhero theme of the game. Your hero will be running past citizens having their purses stolen, getting kidnapped by crazy doctors to be turned into zombies, or being the victims of strange magical rituals by evil wizards, and after a while you just start ignoring them because it just takes up valuable time with no reward to constantly fight them all, when you're on your way to an important mission with opponents that actually pose a challenge. Which doesn't feel very heroic to me.

On the other hand, the low-level bad guys ignore you just as much as you ignore them, no matter how close you get to them, which reminded me of this panel from a Batman comic:

So I just had to reproduce it with Gargoyle-Girl:

Oh, and Kandykane made a new friend yesterday:

Princess Pop reached level 15 recently, which means that she gets to choose a title to have above her name:

I wanted something alliterative, but unfortunately "popular" or "pugnacious" weren't available, so I had to settle for "powerful".

To be honest, I'm getting a little bored with playing with her, mainly because even at level 15 she's still mainly fighting against street gangs in office buildings or warehouses. I want to get to the fun stuff, like the robots, ninjas, wizards, aliens, or sinister government conspiracies! Also, using her powers is getting a little repetitive, with most fights feeling like doing the same thing over and over again. Though it's still fun to make big beefy enemies cringe in fear.

I've got some ideas for other characters I should probably try out to get some variety. Or maybe I should actually try to team up with other players, instead of going at things solo. Princess Pop's powers are of the kind that I suspect would be especially useful for supporting other characters, instead of using them to fight everyone on her own.

It's been a while since I've posted here, but I can assure you that I've kept playing City of Heroes with great enthusiasm. Princess Pop has been fighting all kinds of enemies, including more zombies. She even managed to get one of them to do the splits!

When not fighting crime, she's been relaxing in various ways, including sitting by the dock and looking at the giant octopus.

Of course, the most fun part of the game is still to see what characters other players have come up with. Sometimes, you run into some familiar faces:

But the absolute best moment was when I encountered none other than the man who is the meanest, the prettiest, the baddest mofo low down around this town. Yes, I'm talking about the Shogun of Harlem himself:
