So this trailer dropped a couple hours ago:

Honestly I still haven't played the second but I'll probably get around to it sooner or later. Despite a few hiccups I really liked the first BMZ, especially how it seamlessly (?) blended the lovably weird localization of the first NES game with the anime nonsense of its original version.

The NES game is something I still haven't finished, actually, I remember getting to one of the later bosses that required shooting and strafing and holding down the buttons in that position for as long as you needed to gave me a thumb-cramp and I never made it past it.

Or maybe I'm thinking of the Overdrive WiiWare game? It was a giant crab boss. Whichever game had that.

The giant crab boss is a Blaster Master tradition. BMZ2 is more...setpiece-y I want to say? Features a lot of refinements to the gameplay without losing the flavor from either the original BM or BMZ, but the level structure is more broken down and segregated than in BMZ1.

If you're trying to narrow down which Blaster Master is which, "Giant Crab Monster Boss" is not the best option.

I think there are fewer Blaster Master games with jumping tanks than those.

Blaster Master Zero 1 and 2 are on sale at Steam right now until March 8th. They're good.

I really liked Zero 1, but there's at least one character design in Zero 2 that I found super off-putting in an anime cheesecake way. Does that happen a lot in that game? I'd consider getting it, but I played the last one with my son, so...

It’s just that one cutscene image of one character, if that helps.

Eve also got a somewhat hornier redesign, but she is also half slime monster. YMMV on that one.

Zero 2 is oddly pervy, and imo a step backwards from the original Zero, but it's still good. Probably not the best game to play with your son tho.

I enjoy both of these games. 2 broke things up with separate planets, but with reasons to backtrack. I liked the other tanks you had to battle. The "counter-attack" thing in the over-head stages I'm kind of "eh" about. I'd like a bigger, unified world like the first game.

As long as they keep making these I'll keep getting them. It took a long time but I feel like this series has finally made Blaster Master click in a lot of ways it didn't before.

Judging by the artwork at the end of the trailer, I think there's about a 2/3rds chance that BMZ3 will end up being less horny than its predecessor (here's hoping).

If you ever try beating the original Blaster Master, feel no shame in using savestates for the final area. The rest of the game can be pretty tough in places, but a reasonably cautious and patient player should be able to handle it. Area 8, on the other hand, just feels like it throws everything you thought you knew into the garbage. I don't know how anybody completed it before savestates or the Game Genie were a thing.

I got sidetracked and never finished 2, but I remember liking better how it handled the top down segments by giving you dodge move to help with mobility.

I feel like games with the "parallel world" conceit tend to be tedious. I liked the first two Zero games a lot though, particularly the second for its copious fan service (and, more obviously, original content).
