TRIUMPH OR DIE!: The Street Fighter Thread

What better time than now to start up the Street Fighter franchise thread, as the series most revered entry, STREET FIGHTER II: The World Warrior, turns THIRTY today! As it revitalized the arcade market, it also revolutionized the entirety of the Fighting Game genre, and pretty much every fighting game you like after 1991 owes its entire existence to Street Fighter. In the meantime, we're currently waiting on the final crop of Street Fighter V: Champion Edition characters to drop, which includes Dan, Rose, Oro, Akira (from the Rival Schools games) and "Someone brand spankin' new". What's your favorite Street Fighter? Who're your favorite characters? Let's talk about it!

My favourite Street Fighter is either Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting or Alpha 2. The whole series is just great, but those are special to me. Favourite characters: Blanka, Rose, Rolento, Cammy and G.

I'm fascinated to see what they do with Akira. You know the Rival Schools mechanics will find their way into the game.

My favourite Street Fighter is probably Bison. Dude just loves what he does.

Ken and Sakura are the ones I use the most often however

Hey, @Riot.EXE - is the thread sub-title a reference to the announcer from Alpha 3?
That's EXACTLY what it is.

Two very strong entries, indeed. Rolento is so fun to use in most games. Excited to see how Rose will play in SFV? Or cautiously optimistic? ('cause boy did they fuck up Juri...) I agree about Akira, but she felt WEIRD in her native games, so who knows. Maybe I'll like her better here? More excited about the BRAND NEW CHARACTER because god damn I love to see BRAND NEW CHARACTERS in fighting games.

Ken and Sakura are dope, though, but yeah, Bison is like, the happiest motherfucker in the franchise. I guess villainy is exhilirating?

As for myself, I'm partial to Alpha 3 Upper. SFII:WW was my first "modern fighting game" right when it came out, and Guile was the first character I learned. A nearby gas station had a cabinet and some older kids taught him to me (I was like, 7 at the time. I'm 37 now) so I will ALWAYS have a soft spot in my heart for him. Since then, there's been so many characters that entered the fray that I enjoy using...Rolento, Elena, Juri, Cody, Adon, Kolin, Rashid...there's some real winners in the greater roster. I'd love to see some of the Saturday Night Slam Masters characters make it into the series, but that'd require Capcom paying Mr. Fist of the North Star some bank to use those characters in anything else. Ugh.

I think Alpha 3 and Capcom vs. SNK 2 are my favorites, and yes, I know the latter isn't technically a true Street Fighter game.

I pretty much always use Ken as my main. I change that rule a bit for SFII, though, where in some ways I think I'm a bit better with Ryu instead. I want to love Guile, and back in the early days before I could actually pull off dragon punches, I did, but once I got them down I never went back. Anyway, I love how they continually kept diversifying Ken's moveset from Ryu's, particularly the various kicks that he got.

My best memories were taking on a friend of mine in Alpha 3. We'd usually split our matches, with me using Ken and him... uh, using Shin Akuma because he knew how to pull the Raging Demon really well. (Honestly, I'm pretty proud I managed to split matches under those circumstances.)

3rd Strike is the only Street Fighter game. My favorite character is the worst character, but I will power bomb you

Oh yeah, I'm really excited for SFV Rose. I hope they don't reinvent the wheel too much here, she's already unique.

I hope SFVI brings Juri back to how she was. I think hers was the worst reinvention SFV had to offer.

That's what I thought but I wanted to verify. I think the SF Alpha 3 announcer is the best announcer in any fighting game - I like to refer to him as the Perfect Machine of Hype.

Heh. Reminds of this afternoon I spent playing Street Fighter 2 Turbo on the Super NES with a friend. I was playing Zangief and he was playing Bison. Know you might think that was a lopsided series of matches and you would be correct - but not in the way you think. I owned the game and he didn't (since he had a Genesis) so I was far more familiar with every character so I was trouncing him.

Ha, yeah, I also remember the same friend visiting, and taking me on in Capcom vs. SNK 2. I proceeded to trounce him in the first match, and perfected the second. He decided he was never playing me in that again. Which is fair, considering I quit on him in a round of Tiger Woods golf where he was nailing eagles and holes-in-one. (He later confessed to me that he'd never, ever had a match where he played that well, so I guess that assuaged my feelings somewhat.)

Phantoon

Yeah, I used to play my friend all the time at Turbo and the realisation that people like Balrog and Dhalsim were pretty handy when you got used to them was great (we were young and Balrog had no obviously flashy moves).

SFV season 5 details are coming on the 11th, they said Dan and Rose are gonna be there for sure. I "can't" wait to see how they mess up Rose.

Legitimate question: does anyone prefer the Street Fighter 5 version of a character to their earlier incarnations? Zombie Charlie feels good, and I kinda like Dhalsim better, but the rest I have personally found to "feel" universally worse. This isn't to say SF5 is somehow bad in and of that fact, simply that I find a lot of "Changed" fighters to feel changed for the worse.

And, conversely, I really like some of the newbies, for the record.

G is a really fun take on Q, and also EXTREMELY an SFV character, so if that counts that's probably the only one.

FAVE CHARACTERS

E. honda - he is my IV main, and i love him forever
Rolento - my Alpha main. In 2 especially he is a beast. Also I love final fight
Cody - see above, plus dumb thumb nose portrait
Fei Long - In SSF2 he is so boss
Adon - rooster boy!
Hakan - this character is so weird, i love it
Rufus - Guy Fieri
Urien - Part of my sf3 trifecta of rad
Alex - Looks like 80s hair metal. I dont care, screw you
Oro - Has one arm.
DAN - MVP

I did enjoy Bison and Ken more, but Ken isn't especially different from his earlier incarnations

Favorite Game
I enjoy watching SFIV and SFV Tournament Play. SFV is probably my favorite (although that is probably because of recency bias).
The SF game I've played the most is Super Street Fighter II.

Favorite Characters
Ken - When I was briefly good at Street Fighter (SFII era) I would play as Ken.
Rose - I'm always reminded of the Evo won with a PS1 Controller. I like her character design as well.
Sagat - I love his character design and imposing frame.
Cammy with the Fiona Costume - I like that Capcom has not forgotten about Haunting Ground. As an aside I would love to see a new Haunting Ground or Clock Tower game.

Why I Like SF
I really like the lore of SF. Every character has a backstory and their stories are intertwined. I think the SF is pretty fun. I also like that Final Fight and Street Fighter are related.

My favorite competitive game to watch is SF. I like the simplicity and play style the game allows. I've been following SF coverage long enough to know some of the players. I watch EVO, Capcom Cup and SF League.

I also feel like the artwork and music for the series have been consistently stellar.

This thread is reminding me that I should pick up SFV at some point.

It's wild to think of how many wildly different Capcom series can be traced to Street Fighter;
Final Fight is explicitly a spin-off
Captain Commando takes place in Final Fights Metro City, just in the far future
Section Z stars Captain Commando, so it counts too
One of the guys in SFV (whose name I forget) originated the Strider Clan, that Hiryu belongs to
And Street Fighter 2010 is... divorced enough form every other game that, sure, I guess it's also a spinoff.

Sarge

There's a reason I haven't touched SFV, and it's because I got so burned with SFIV. "Here's the first version. Oh, here's another version. Oh, here's another version, but we absolutely promise, this is the last one."

Finally buy the last one...

"Haha, sucker, here's one more for you."

This is why I still don't own Ultra SFIV, either.

Phantoon

I cuss you bad
Yeah, but at least after the first one it was £20 to upgrade. In the past it was full price for every upgrade. With SFV I think there was one upgrade you had to pay for, and that may have been optional too

DEEP LORE NONSENSE: That's Zeku, and he's Guy's master/predecessor in the whole ninja master lineage thing, and he/that was established way back in (if memory serves) Guy's arcade story in Street Fighter Alpha 2. So it's Strider-Final Fight connections all the way down.

Come to think of it, considering that era and how everything winds up tangentially connected, kind of surprised there hasn't been an overt (not crossover game) connection between Bionic Commando/Super Joe and Street Fighter.

Phantoon

I cuss you bad
Yeah, his gimmick is his old style is Bushin-style ninjitsu and he's created a new style he can freely switch to which is Strider-style. So Zeku is the first Strider. It's a really cool callback.

Street Fighter V has really cool newcomers. They're all much better than IV managed and I can see more of them sticking around.

Nash was sent to steal the ultimate weapon prototype from Shadowloo. That weapon is rumored to be grappling hook that could stop bullets.

Radd/Ladd Spencer for Smash MvC.

Also want to call out Chun Li - she is so rad. Was my main back in OG SF2 days. That air throw was boss. Oh and wall jumps, oh and bouncing off heads. I love her Alpha redesign.

CHUN LI!

If you're going by cameos, then it gets even crazier thanks to Ken's Stage in Alpha 2. You got Darkstalkers, Forgotten Worlds, AvP...
