Nier-er To Me: The Nier Thread

The only thing that matters is that you play it. You're lucky I didn't know you hadn't played it yet or I would've yelled at you. Also if you like 9S you're a criminal, sorry but them's the rules

The internet's collective adoration of him makes me incredibly uncomfortable.

Maybe they all didn't get far enough? Cuz early on you're SUPPOSED to like him. He's like hey gang it's me Goku I mean Nines, let's all have fun hahaha and then you get to know him and it's like OH MY. But if you didn't get that far...ya know? I hope, anyway, shit.

He's definitely an interesting character study, what with coming off as the kind soul to 2B's militarism early on, and then as you delve further into his psyche there's some truly terrifying pathos in there and 2B turns out to be the kinder soul. 9S ends up being pitiable and pathetic, but also really awful and you can't just write it off as "he's programmed that way". Interesting to note, though, that on my second playthrough I noticed hints very early on that he was not the greatest, so great writing on Yoko's part there. So yeah, great character, terrible person.

I can see where angry cishet white dudes on the internet would find him sympathetic though.

Not unless you want to learn more about the characters' personalities, the state of the world, and how these two concepts relate to each other.

There are some really strong sidequests in the game, and just blazing through the main story and ignoring them would be doing yourself a disservice. There are some great character moments and worldbuilding, and some funny moments as well.

So I killed Adam and Eve. And this time when the credits roll they didn't blitz by. I'm guessing this is the first real ending people were talking about?

Yes, that is Ending A. Keep playing, you aren't done yet.

I'm not into the game itself (Drakengard was remarkable for how misanthropic it is in every way, which makes consuming an LP a better option than playing it) but the backstory is wild (because of its connection to Drakengard) and I'm here for it.

idk, I think if we want to believe games can tell a story through the gameplay, then you have to be willing to "suffer" through drakengard. You can get a lot out of an LP, but the game leverages the actual process of playing it better than most everything else out there, and I know I wouldn't care nierly as much for it if I didn't actually go through all that grinding for the weapon stories.

True. I can understand, in the abstract, that Yoko Taro deliberately challenged the "100% completion" idea by way of ridiculous, soul-killing, frustrating weapon quests, which only make the endings worse and worse as you get closer to 100%, and have someone (coughcoughDarkIdcough) play through that and share their experience. I get the point he's trying to make, and this level of trolling/subversion is the reason I believe Drakengard is a very deliberate piece of art, however flawed the execution may be. But if I'm not playing it myself, I'm not really engaging with the art, I'm only engaging with other people's interpretations of it.

Disclaimer: I bought Drakengard 1 about eight years ago and I am no closer to cracking open the case :p

Nier Remake Gameplay Trailer

As someone with no experience of the original, this looks pretty good, no?

Looks like Nier moves faster than i remember in the original. Combat looks smoother too.

Well, he IS 20 to 30 years younger here.

Kidding aside, it feels like they switched out the old combat engine for Automata's, and revised his combos. I'm still conflicted about getting this version, but if I do, I hope I can still rely on my trusty Phoenix Spear to slide through and dive-bomb hordes of enemies.

I've already accepted that, for better or worse, this won't be the same experience as the original game and so I'm willing to play and judge this remake on its own merits.

Still gonna be a bit salty about hearing people refer to this as a "prequel" to Automata though.

yea it's gonna feel very weird playing regular nier with automata combat (if that's what it is). Also kinda feels antithetical, but probably not to a degree that matters (and that was more of a point for automata i think).

Any indication about whether they’ll have dad Nier as DLC? I have zero interest in bishi Nier and feel a little bad that I don’t want to get this remake because of that.

My favorite bit in OG Nier was some trolling Cavia/Yoko Taro did against the Trophy/Achievement culture of the time, and I hope they either keep it or do something similar in the remaster. Spoilers obviously, the game is broken into two halves, and there's a break of no return where you can't complete earlier sidequests. Sidequest completion is tracked in the game menu, so you'd think that after you hit 50% done, you're safe to move on to the next half. If you move on and complete all the sidequests in the second half, you'll end up with only a 99% completion rating.

The developers had hidden a secret quest in the first half that is a little hard to get to, and doesn't show up on your map. In order to get the 100% rating, you have to talk to a guy in one area three times on three separate visits, not just three times overall. Then, you'll get 51% completion in the first half, and be on your way to get 100% in-game. Also, getting that completion doesn't actually give you that sweet trophy/achievement you were chasing, it does nothing at all.
