Share your Shame of Rebuying a Game

I think Sonic the Hedgehog is the one I’ve rebought the most:

Original Genesis version that came with my brother’s Genesis
PS2 Genesis Collection I bought because it had Phantasy Star IV and I only ever rented it for the Genesis
PS3 Genesis Collection on sale
PC Genesis Collection for a legal copy of the rom
Switch Genesis Collection because I want everything on the Switch
3DS Port with 3D effects
Android Christian Whitehead Port with widescreen
Mega Drive Mini I bought as a souvenir from my Tokyo trip edit: Correction that was Sonic 2 on the Japan Mega Drive Mini, so my list is slightly less embarrassing...

Man, I don’t even like Sonic the Hedgehog that much, it just keeps popping up in compilations I buy.

Discuss rebuying games here.

Long ago, I found the Collector's Edition of Morrowind on Ebay, so I snapped it up, even though I owned the GOTY edition. I had to have that sweet art book, Ordinator miniature, and soundtrack, you know.

I basically don't buy video game merch but I definitely looked at prices for collector's editions and/or just the art book after playing it and loving it for the first time this year. Seems like a pretty cool art book!

I *think* I own every release of Space Channel 5:
-JP Dreamcast
-US Dreamcast
-JP PS2
-US PS2 (bundled with Part 2)
-Game Boy Advance

And it’s still not the game I bought the most times, which is certainly Final Fantasy IV.

Here's something you all might fun and/or horrifying to do - compare how many times you have bought a game to how many times you have played it.

The two games I've bought the most times:

Final Fantasy IV: SNES original, FF Chronicles on PSX, Advance on GBA, and Complete on PSP (though technically I bought it on Vita)
Okami: PS2, Wii, PS3, PS4, Switch.

Hm. I'll have to ponder this one, haha.

Going to exclude Minis, comps and Switch Online Apps here or else I'll be here a while.

Resident Evil 4 - GC, PS2, Wii (luckily I stopped there)
Resident Evil (remake) - GC, Switch
Resident Evil: Code Veronica - DC (twice)
Skies of Arcadia - DC, GC, DC (again)
Legend of Zelda - NES (stolen), GBA, Wii, Wii U, NES (again)
Dragon Quest VII - 3DS, PS1
Dragon Quest IV - DS, NES (twice)
Dragon Quest II - NES, Famicom, NES
Dragon Quest III - NES, Switch
The Last Blade II - DC, Wii, Switch
Street Fighter Alpha 3 - DC, GBA
Gris - Switch (digital and collector's edition)
Blaster Master Zero - 3DS, Switch (collector's)
Blaster Master Zero 2 - Switch (digital and collector's)
Super Mario 3D World - Wii U, Switch
Xenoblade Chronicles - Wii, Switch
Bomberman 64 - N64, Wii U
Blades of Steel - NES, Wii
EarthBound - SNES, Wii U
Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - N64, 3DS
Final Fantasy VII - PS3, Switch (and yet I can't get into it lol)
Final Fantasy VI - SNES, GBA, Wii
Chrono Trigger - SNES, Super Famicom, DS, Wii
Banjo-Kazooie - N64 (twice)
Blast Corps - N64 (twice)
Bioshock - PS3 twice (second was the duo with the sequel)
Mirror's Edge - PS3 three times (physical, then digital, then physical again)
Vandal Hearts - PS1 (twice, disc rot the first time)

There's more, but those are what leap to mind at the moment.

I'm actually fairly proud of the fact that I haven't done this much. Most duplicates I have were either free/gifts or replaced a broken/lost system/version.

I did buy Puzzle Quest twice, I had it (and beat it) on 3DS and then bought it (and beat it) again on Switch. But the 3DS one had a sound glitch so I never actually heard a single song all the way through. I also don't remember the Switch one having so much art.

Also Shenmue, had the first one on Dreamcast and the bought the 1 and 2 collection for Xbox One.

Here's something you all might fun and/or horrifying to do - compare how many times you have bought a game to how many times you have played it.

I've bought Super Mario World every time I've been able to, which is, let's see:

SNES (twice - regular cart, and Super Mario All-Stars w/Super Mario World)
GBA
Wii
Wii U
New 3DS
SNES Classic

I have 100%-ed all of the above versions. I also have it on the SNES Switch online service, but haven't 100%-ed it (though I have played it through, iirc, Vanilla Dome. I will probably 100% it there, too, eventually). I've also 100%-ed it on emulator back in the early 2000s, on PSP, and on Vita.

I really, really like Super Mario World.

I've bought Final Fantasy X and X-2 a bunch of times - their original releases on PS2, then the remasters on PS3, PS4, Vita, PC, and Switch, though I didn't play through X-2 until those last two. I love those games, but I hope to never have to buy them again.

To follow up on Becksworth's Sonic post, I've done the same, except with Shining Force II - released far fewer times than Sonic, but I've bought it every time I've been able to, in nearly every collection it's been in. Which means I've also bought like all the Sonic games probably a dozen times, too.

To give a counter example, I buy Secret of Mana over and over again and the farthest I ever got was about five hours into the Switch version on the collection. I really need to stop buying that game.

It's not the most I've bought a game, but I am always ashamed of buying Hoshigami on DS after buying and hating it on PS1.

Despite owning the Megaman Zero collection for the DS, and both ZX and ZX Advent, I still bought the Megaman ZX collection for the switch. Because being portable on one handheld wasnt enough apparently!

Pokemon Red w/ 1 Nidoran
I've bought WarCraft II three seperate times for myself (and once as a gift) and the original StarCraft three times. It would be 4 but the most recent version of StarCraft is free.

Most of the ones I can think of are only bought twice, so here's the ones that are more times than that.

FF4: SNES, SFC, GBA, PSX, DS
FF5: SFC, PSX, GBA
DQ1: GBC, Phone, Switch
DQ3: GBC, SFC, Phone, Switch
Secret of Mana: SFC, SNES, Switch, technically I didn't buy the 2018 remake but we all 3 played through it together so it kind of counts

However, I don't regret any of these, even though the Super Famicom buys have almost entirely been for aesthetic purposes.

Okay, there is one special regret shout out for Dragon Quest 11. I bought it twice because I pre-ordered the special edition from the SE store and took the entire week off work, but when I found out the game wouldn't arrive on-time, I went out to Gamestop and also bought it then so I could start playing right away during my vacation. I got the SE store shipment the very next day.

Well, what comes to mind for me is KH1- the original, an imported copy of Final Mix, 1.5 Remix, 1.5+2.5 Remix. Other than that... MM1-6 three times (Mega Man Anniversary Collection, individually for the 3DS, Mega Man Legacy Collection), then a ton of things twice, but that's it.

Most of my duplicates have since been rehomed, including some Zeldas and the first four Dragon Quests.

Still got:
The first GBA Fire Emblem on cart and Wii U VC.
Dragon Quest VIII on PS2 and 3DS.
Katamari Damacy on PS2 (twice over) and Switch.
Smash 64 on N64 and Wii VC.

Did I buy the Pokemon Virtual Console releases even though I have my carts? Yes. (Red, Blue, and Silver.)

As an incredibly impulsive child I got my hands on Megaman Legends, then sold it to get a few dollars for a new game and regretted it because MML was more fun. Then I bought it again some time later and repeated the exact same crap and had the exact same regret. This time I couldn't buy it the same way again because new copies weren't being produced or shipped anymore, but I managed to nab one from a friend that was offloading their N64 stuff as they moved up to the PS2. That one I left, along with the N64 and a bunch of other games, with the kids of an ex years and years ago.

Probably wouldn't have been able to track down another copy for a reasonable price if it didn't go up digitally on PSN. This is the one I feel actual shame for letting go of twice as a child (not that last time though).

Far more shamelessly I've bought nearly every version of Dragon's Dogma that has ever released, including an extra physical copy on PS3 (because the digital copy was from the month it was free from PS+). So I think it goes like

Dragon's Dogma PS3
DD: Dark Arisen PS3 (digital)
DD: Dark Arisen PS3 (physical)
DD vanilla 360
DD Dark Arisen PC
DD Dark Arisen Switch
AND THEY'RE ALL MINE YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM

games i bought multiple copies of to give or loan to friends: nier geststalt, breath of fire: dragon quarter

games i've owned off and on, and sold for money reasons or because i was annoyed with them: star ocean: the last hope (each rerelease :/), mushihimesama (i had the ps2 le and sold it for about what i paid, maybe a little more. then i had the 360 version and sold it for a little less (it probably would've cost that much in the first place if the exchange rate hadn't been abysmal when it released). then i got the steam version, so i've probably spent about $30 net on the game), final fantasy xii (english launch version, ps2 izjs, switch zodiac age). there's probably others in this category which don't come to mind at the moment (at least 2/3 of my games are on a shelf at my parents' house i can't see right now)

fighting games i bought "the same version of" (that is, not multiple updates ala blazblue or sf4) repeatedly to have more chances to play with people: vampire savior (ps1 (well, that was just a "it's $6 and i love this game so..."), xbox 360 darkstalkers resurrection download, ps3 DR disc; want to get a copy of the japanese ps2 release (similar to the SFA/SF2 collections of that era) and a cps2 board sometime...), guilty gear accent core plus(/r) (ps2, 360 ps3 steam downloads...so every version but wii)

games i've bought repeatedly to have newer, older, or fancier versions of ("vanity copies", if you will) even though i already had one: knights in the nightmare, star ocean 1 & 2 (actually, i also just have two sets of discs for ps1 second story now as well, since the original one i got was disc only...), valkyrie profile 2: silmeria (jp limited edition)

games it seems i will likely buy vanity copies of eventually: valkyrie profile 1 (jp limited edition box), money idol exchanger and puchi carat (ps1 discs), g-darius and darius gaiden

games i would've gotten vanity copies of but happened to receive as gifts from friends who know my tastes very well and are super nice: puchi carat (gameboy color), drakengard 3 (english LE)

I would have to check, but I don't think I have any such shame. If I rebuy a game, it's usually with a carefully-considered purpose in mind.

That purpose usually being "but I don't feel like hooking up the old console."

I bought a standalone physical copy of Guilty Gear Xrd Rev2 when it came out, instead of the much cheaper upgrade from Revelator, because I failed at navigating the PSN store.

My top offenders.

Mega Man X x3. SNES, GC (MMX collection) and PS4 (MMX collection).
Resident Evil Remake x3. GC, PS3*, and PS4*.
Super Mario Bros x5. SNES, GBA, Wii (Virtual Console), Wii (Mario All-Stars), and Game and Watch.
Super Mario Bros 3 x3. NES, SNES, and Wii (Mario All-Stars).
Super Mario World x3. SNES, Wii (Virtual Console), and SNES Classic.

*I think I had to buy this 2x on PSN. A PS3 copy did not give you a PS4 copy IIRC.

Symphony of the Night tops it off for me, probably, but there is no shame involved.
  • PS1 PAL release
  • Saturn release
  • Dracula X Chronicles release
  • PSN PS3/PSP/Vita release
  • PS4 Castlevania Requiem release
My first time playing the game was emulated on an Xbox, so that was a bit weird, and I played through the 360 XBLA release once as well when I had access to it.

conchobhar

What's Shenmue?
I don't actually do this very much; when I rebuy games there tends to be a good, or at least justifiable reason to double-dip. So I bought both Mega Man Anniversary Collection (PS2) and Mega Man Legacy Collection (3DS), but there was approximately a decade between those releases, and Legacy is a better port (and with added convenience of being on a handheld system). And Shenmue I & II may have netted me another copy of the second game, but I don't have the means to play my first copy (Xbox) release anymore, so there was a practical consideration there.

I think the most I've purchased a single title is Shadow of the Colossus: PS2 original, PS3 via Ico/Shadow of the Colossus Collection, and PS4 graphical remake. Fewer than that, but closer to the spirit of this thread, I recently bought a Dreamcast copy of Shenmue despite owning the (much more convenient) Shenmue I & II— an acquisition that was purely for the novelty. I also bought Toki Tori 2 a second time more or less on a whim.

Only ones I’m missing is the PAL PS1 release I think.

I’d buy it on switch too if Konami would ever fuckin’ port it!

I want all the IGAvanias on Switch. All of them. What is the holdup?! I want to buy all your games again, Konami!

IGAvanias and Silent Hill collections would be high sellers for the Talking Time community. Its the general public that is the problem.

I know there has been documented issues with the SH games (lost source code).

I'm looking forward to the game awards on Thursday specifically because new Silent Hill(s) have been heavily rumored.

You're assuming that I actually feel shame at doing so. I tend to buy duplicates when I feel they are a good value compared to their current worth, so I've definitely got quite a few. Of course, why I need four copies of Sonic 2 or three copies each of the first two Zelda games, I don't know. I guess I figure I'll resell some eventually? The only time I can think of that I've actually done that was a swap of one of my three copies of Castlevania III for Crash Bandicoot on PSX.

Anyway, for games I've rebought, I saw Final Fantasy IV listed, and yeah, I've got that in a lot of forms: SNES, PSX, GBA, PSP, DS. Symphony of the Night is another: 2x PSX, PSP via Dracula X Chronicles, and a digital version of DXC. Dragon Warrior/Quest III also goes in the bucket, with the original NES game, the GBC port, and the SNES remake.

Ignoring the Darius games, for I will brook no criticism for my gollum-like coveting of those, a couple of years ago something snapped and I got massively into the King's Field series, having admired it from afar for some time. Within a few months I had every available regional version of every entry in the series (although the rare KF3 demo/prequel Pilot Style evades my grasp), so that's two completely needless purchases per game in most cases, and every time I see copies for sale I have to put a concerted effort into not buying further duplicates.

Despite efforts to generally prune and 'curate' my games, I've somehow managed to do the same with most of the Mr. Driller ports more recently, and it's happening with first and second generation Armored Core as we speak.

Edit: the KF obsession could actually be a lot worse - you may have noticed there are many different pressings of the US King's Field, distinguishable by minor changes to the cover art, such as the colouring of the swords, etc.

I still need to get a copy of King's Field (actually the second game, but you know that!) one of these days. I also wish Shadow Tower wasn't so expensive.
