The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom - Breath Wilder

Olli

This was being discussed in the Nintendo thread, but given that it's probably going to be my GotY, I figured it's about time for a thread of its own. Here's the recent Mr. Aonuma gameplay video, with spoilers:

My wife and I are currently debating whether we’re going to try to share a save (we’ve been wanting to play something together but I have trouble relinquishing control of long games I’ve already gotten into by myself), have separate saves, or maybe have *three* saves for all of the above, lol.

Meanwhile I STILL need to actually play the endgame of the original.

I think it's very funny for a game with the word "tear" the title to have fuse as a main gameplay verb.

oops i forgor this thread existed

the key narrative stuff i feel ambivalent towards, but woooowwweeeee this looks like it's gonna have a bunch of that Weird Stuff i crave

Violentvixen

True, but that's fine, they can battle over magic apostrophes or whatever that was and punch each other. In the meantime scholar Zelda and I will roam the countryside cataloguing wildlife and making weird monstrosities with the fuse power and cook weird meals.

I guess I kind of don't care at all about Ganon after playing Breath of the Wild 1? Oops!

The trailer showed excerpts from scenes where Zelda is talking and Link clearly isn't there, whereas in Breath of the Wild (except for the very last memory and the end of Champions' Ballad) every cutscene was from Link's perspective. That suggests she will have a larger role in the story.

My mom continues to give me shit because I haven't "finished" (read: 100% completed) botw, unlike her retired and hyperfocused ass. I'm replaying it now, but I'm not sure if I'll have enough time to get everything done before Tears comes out.

I like Zorldo. I like this trailer. I want to play it.

I'm also trying to temper my enthusiasm and hype. Because Zelda means so much to me, and I love everything I'm seeing from this. But this trailer is also implying a stronger narrative than will probably happen. Which will only leave me disappointed. I love narrative driven stories. I wish Zelda would embrace those more. I don't think that's in the cards.

There's going to be four escort missions where link and one of the guys from botw go through a thing.

Yeah I think 3-4 years are supposed to have passed between games.

Teba's kid looks much bigger too.

I've been replaying BOTW to prepare myself spiritually, and I gotta say it's a very good game.

Looks like a keychain-sized thing that holds two Switch cartridges.

If impressions are to be believed, Fuse lets you extend the life of a weapon considerably, and if you unfuse and refuse a weapon you can effectively reset its durability. The trade off is that the item you fused it with will be destroyed when unfused. This feels like a good compromise to me, because it maintains the scrappy, scrambling nature of the combat while feeling like you’re investing in your weapons instead of constantly discarding them. I’ll probably actually use rare weapons this time.

Review copies have been distributed and there is no embargo. Good luck if you're trying to dodge spoilers.

That being said, anyone looking to avoid even basic information at all about the game probably should already be doing so, given the video in the OP.

I am hearing about Gatcha Day 1 Microtransaction bullshit because we live in purgatory and nothing good can be allowed to remain that way.

Fuck you if you even try to defend that shit in any way shape or form.

It is my sincere and earnest belief that any system where actual money can, not must, CAN be entered in for a chance at the thing actually desired, with no guarantee of getting it is a system maliciously and cruelly designed to take advantage of people at risk of gambling addiction.

It does not matter if "it's OPTIONAL." The option to throw away good money after bad for the POSSIBLITY of something you want, but not way to just fucking buy the thing you want is a cruel psychological trick with it's targeting laser directly pointed at the brains of people who have that weakness. It doesn't matter if YOU are willing to grind for it. It's a nakedly cruel attempt to bleed dry the people without your mental fortitude, while erasing as much blame from the corporation doing the cutting.

It is a truly disgusting business practice and I am truly disgusted by it. It's disgusting in Mobile Gatchas. It's disgusting in Genshin Impact. It's disgusting in every single Blizzard lootbox game, and if it is indeed in Tears of the Kingdom, it will be disgusting there as well.

I look at this absolutely despicable trend, and all I can think about is how it wasn't that long ago when we were all genuinely heated about games trying to sell on-disk DLC and 5 dollar horse armors. How did we go from screaming in outrage about having to pay an extra 5 bucks for somehting that's very much in the game already, to blithely accepting paying for slot machine chances for said on disk items?

FUCK YOU IF YOU TRY TO RATIONALIZE THIS.

Where are you seeing microtransactions? From what I can find it looks like it’s all in-game currency, which is just typical random drops at that point. The question is whether the drop rates are egregious.

yeah i read and skimmed a handful of previews and saw no mention of anything like this

my guess is that this is a miscommunication based on the term "gacha" now sometimes being used to mean both "this game has paid gambling" and "this game has drop rates" these days

(also, botw already had drop rates for rare items, it was fine. my guess is it will be fine here too, and no one will notice who isn't doing power grinding for its own sake)
