I wonder what a cockatrice tastes like? Let's Play NetHack!
Ladies and gentlemen, I am relatively new to the world of roguelikes. This time last year, I had never played one, and my only exposure to them was by way of Netbrian's (just recently finished) LP.
Come today, I have played very far in Angband, and have run multiple Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup games to completion. I have a bit of experience under my belt, but I've only ever dabbled lightly in NetHack, which, to many people, is probably the roguelike. Fellow Tyrants, this ends now. I intend to win this game, and I'm taking you along for the ride. I will be posting here the life and times of every character I roll until I finally win. First things first. We need to vote on tiles vs. ASCII. When I start playing, I'll check this thread and count how many votes there are for ASCII. The number of votes for tiles will be summarily ignored divided by two likewise counted, and I will play with the winner. I shall cast the first vote for ASCII. For those not in the know: NetHack is a spinoff of an old role-playing game called Rogue, intended to be played in terminals (with your player's location represented by an @ sign, monsters as various letters, and so on). Since then, it has been traditional for every roguelike to have a mode that can be played in a terminal, with ASCII characters instead of graphics. Second, I need race/role/gender/alignment/name suggestions. I was initially going to put this to a vote, but this has the problem of there being too many options to vote for, so I'll just be handling this Boojum-style (taking the first suggestion, running with it, and then the second, and so on). Finally, I would like to direct your attention to page three of the Not Worth Its Own Thread thread, where I have posted a trial LP run of a different game. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for improvement; remember, it is your own reading experience you will be improving! Well, that's it for now. Let me know your preferences, and I might get this started as soon as a few days from now. May $DEITY have mercy upon my soul. Would you like to play along? Download the game here for free! Just be warned that the controls are... complicated. Split the difference and use Geoduck's tiles. Mostly looks like ASCII, but a lot easier to parse.

This. Also, ASCII. And a Neutral Human Archaeologist, if you will.

I'm partial to ASCII as well, but that's because I consider it the only True Way (tm) to play the game.

And of course, a Tourist named Twoflower, if you please. |

I'm so noobish I don't even know what races are in this game, much less jobs, hell I hardly know how the game works.

I'll vote for ASCII, with a lawful gnome healer.
Looking forward to the LP! |

I'll go for the Geoduck tileset, because the other tilesets are ugly as sin but that one makes me laugh every time.

I'm looking forward to this LP; Stiv and Boojum's LPs have gotten me into Angband and DC:SS, and I'm currently dabbling in DoomRL, but I've always been too intimidated by Nethack's nuances to try it out.
Oh, and I vote for Geoduck's tiles. Last edited by Gerad; 02-15-2010 at 08:12 AM. Reason: Forgot to vote |

Vote: ASCII
How many ascensions do you have under your belt, to take on this LP? I've got a few (Valk/Wiz/Ranger) and I'll be watching you.. o.O Role Suggestion: (Chaotic) Elvish Wizard (but feel free to reroll scum a few times to get an interesting combination of starting items, they're hard to play the first few levels) 2nd Suggestion: Lawful Dwarven Valkyrie, and be sure to get Excalibur and Mojo ASAP, plus a dagger throwing machine till you get 25 strength! |

I figured that me being a novice to this game (but not roguelikes in general) would make for nice LP material. What will happen in a perfect world is this: I'll die pretty quickly the first few times, you guys will be able to tell me how I'm Doing it Wrong and make suggestions for improvement, and I'll gradually be able to get further and further until I finally ascend, with all of my adventures and deaths chronicled here. This LP will also be highly interactive, as a result. EDIT: And when you give me suggestions, keep my newbie status in mind. Don't just tell me to go make some holy water, tell me to make holy water by putting water on an aligned altar and #praying when it is safe to do so. Quote:

My first ever ascension was with a Lawful Human Archaeologist, so I'll vote for that. Also ASCII.

Roles: Archaeologist Barbarian Cave[wo]man Healer Knight Monk Priest[ess] Rogue Ranger Samurai Tourist Valkyrie Wizard Races: Human Dwarf Gnome Orc Elf Alignment is Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic. (Also, you guys sure do like your Archaeologists!) |

If you want to ascend, I vote Valkyrie as it seems to be easiest class. I had all but ascended as one until my save game got corrupted. Man, that bummed me out so much I haven't played Nethack since. Had an ascension kit together and everything and was heading through Gehennom. |

Vote: Geoduck
Name everyone after Tyrants, try to show off a variety of classes and races until you settle on the one you can most easily ascend, and try to do the more interesting parts on viddler if you have the equipment. |

Actually that Geoduck set looks pretty swank. Use that one.

Geoduck. I'm curious what somebody who has played a lot of Angband and DCSS will think of Nethack's mid/endgame.

Gotta agree with the general consensus: the tiles named after strangely shaped clams (Geoduck) seem to be the best bet here.

That's easy. You just pronounce the g, then the o, then the e, then the duck, just like it's spelled.

You know, I think I'm just going to call it in favor of the Geoduck tileset. It's currently a tie, but I'll resolve that by changing my vote. In all honesty, it's kind of the way to go; novices will be able to recognize things like doors, easily, while experts will (probably) still be able to recognize the dangerous monsters.
EDIT: That was written before StriderDL had cast his vote. Anyway, coming soon: Keep the race/role suggestions coming! And once your character dies, submit more and I'll put you back in the queue. I'll probably be able to go through all of them. |
