If in doubt, write down how many views your thread has before you update, then compare the numbers after a day. I mean... I try to make an effort to comment on the ones I enjoy to encourage the writer but if it's not asking for party choices or names or whether or not to execute someone, it's kinda tough after a while.

Maybe that needs to go in the FAQ, then. Like,

Q) What kind of a response can I expect?
A) This depends on the game you choose, how you present it, how many active LP threads are open, and the level of interaction the game demands from the peanut gallery. Generally speaking, though, you should try and commit to completing the LP even if you don't get the level of response you want.

Really, the biggest complaint about the LP subforum from people who aren't frequenting it is that there are too many of them, and many of the ones that get started don't finish anyway. Maybe if more of them were being finished people wouldn't be so skittish about picking a couple to follow, instead of just writing off the whole kit'n'kaboodle.

Yeah, to repeat: The forum lists keep track of number of comments and number of views in a given thread. Ignore the comments and go on views. Sometimes there's just not much for readers to say -- but that doesn't mean they're not reading.

Also - I end up lurking in a lot of LP threads for a kind of stupid reason. Since the threads often have huge updates that take a while to read, I often end up opening several in new tabs to read later while I'm actually interacting with the forums. Then, when I finish reading them much later, I'm reluctant to add comments because the forum will notice I'm here and reset my "last read" times. Yeah, like I said, it's kinda dumb, but I really hate messing up my "jump to unread post" thingers.

I was watching the number of views because I know I've read LPs and gone, 'huh, well that was fun' and not posted a comment.

I got disheartened when I said, okay guys, decision time! what's next? and then there's tumbleweeds. So I guess that should be in the FAQ too?
