Default Can he swing from a thread? Let's Play Questprobe Featuring Spider-Man

Questprobe featuring Spider-Man #0

And Lo, There Shall Come A Spider-Man...

Hey, I'm doing another one of these. If you remember last time, I did my first and somehow not last ever Let's Play of Questprobe Featuring the Hulk, a graphic adventure (that could also be played as a text adventure) game about Hulk doing what he does best: wandering around a dome-filled landscape, biting his tongue and getting murdered by ants. You know, the Hulk.

I don't know much about what to expect this time, but I am hoping it somewhat resembles a real plot. Spider-Man seems definitely more suited to a puzzle solving game than the Hulk. True, he's known for victories that involve punching and quips, Spider-Man's real skills are in science and problem solving. But I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's begin with...

[b]What is Questprobe?[/b}

In the event that you didn't catch my last one of these, the Questprobe games were a series of graphic adventure games about the adventures of various Marvel superheroes. The first released was a game about the Incredible Hulk and three total were released of a proposed 12 (the fourth game would have been an X-Men game.) That first one mostly involved wandering around, collecting gems and solving puzzles and felt more like some previously programmed game with Marvel IP slapped onto it. The Questprobe games were designed by Text Adventure Game pioneer Scott Adams?

Who is Scott Adams?

Don't worry, he isn't the Dilbert guy. Granted, this Scott Adams tends to make me mad, too, but that's less the content of his character/worldview and more that some of the puzzles he makes for the game requites lateral thinking. Which is to say lateral to rational though and sure as heck doesn't intersect with it. He's made a number of text adventures, the last one being in 2013, a Bible-based adventure game called the Inheritence. I don't know if that means it is a Christian game or if it just takes place during a bible story, but it doesn't even have a wikipedia page. He also made a Buckaroo Banzai game, which sounds fascinating and is probably as impenetrable as the movie?

Who is Spider-Man?

Really? Well, I'm sure everyone reading this has at least the VAGUEST idea of one of the world's most recognizable superhero. Peter Parker was a shy science-loving teen and "professional wallflower" who is one day bitten by a radioactive spider. The spider's bite gives him incredible powers. Peter also makes a cool device to make him shoot webs. But instead of fighting crime, he initially uses his powers to gain fame and fortune, anonymously as the performer Spider-Man. After a performance, a burglar runs by him and Peter decides not to stop him. When the cops tell him he could have at least slowed him down with no risk to himself (probably not a thing a cop should say, even if he's right), Peter shrugs and is all like "Not my problem jack."

Later on, Peter returns home to find that a criminal killed his beloved father figure Uncle Ben (not the rice guy). As Spider-Man, Peter finds and captures the criminal, only to discover (dun dun DUN) it was the guy he didn't capture before. I BET YOU THOUGHT I WAS JUST GIVING UNNECESSARY DETAILS BUT HE WAS IN FACT KEY TO THIS STORY!

Realizing that his failure to take action cost him a loved one, Peter decided to always be responsible and fight crime as Spider-Man. While living with his loving but frail Aunt, he tries to balance school, crime fighting and making ends meet for his poor family. Part of that involves his work as a freelance photographer, making money off the very man who hates Spider-Man, irascible publisher and lovable old curmudgeon/jerkface J. Jonah Jameson.

I love Jameson.

Spider-Man was created by writer Stan Lee who wanted to create a superhero about the age of a teen sidekick (and also added the spider part because spiders are creepy and cool) and Steve Ditko, the famously Randian creator who recently passed away. Ditko gave the book a look different than the lantern-jawed powerhouses of Jack Kirby (Marvel's more famous artist), making Peter look scrawny and Spider-Man look lean and agile.

The appeal of the book was many. In many ways, it was a conventional story of a superhero who fights crime while hiding a duel identity, it also was very much a soap opera, with serialized subplots and intrigue in Peter's life as well as Spider-Man's. In some other books, the duel identity was an inconvenience, but here, it really felt like Peter was really struggling with his secrets, as well as with money and romance. In addition, Peter is a very imperfect hero. Though he has many admirable traits, it's not uncommon for him to not only make mistakes but behave in a petty manner or have a bit of a temper that gets him into trouble. At the end of the day, he's a good guy, but it tends to be a bumpy road, with many learning curves and errors on the way. Also, Spider-Man is funny.

But the biggest appeal is that he's supposed to be the everyman. There's no greater destiny (which is why I hate whenever they try to add that stuff, like the dumb idea that his real parents were SHIELD agents) or higher calling, there's just a guy trying to help people in his own, somewhat flawed way. His heroism often comes in the form of a lack of some big cosmic thanks for his good work, for the most part. Sometimes nice stuff happens to him and we are happy. But sometimes he can have a big victory only to come home to find that his heroism has accidentally made trouble for himself. He's a hero because he just keeps doing it, even when he's given tempting excuses not to.

So that's about it. It's a fun action-packed soap opera about a well-meaning science nerd who's only reward is action. There are a lot of great heroes to choose from, but he's still my favourite.

So what do you want out of a Spider-Man Graphic Adventure?

Graphics. And I will get them, but I might have to use the term loosely. Unlike the Hulk, delivering a beatdown isn't something I NEED this time around. Spider-Man often defeats enemies with his wits and science nerdery. So lateral thinking puzzles to defeat classic Spider-foes would be cool. I do want some classic Spider-foes too. Doctor Octopus, Mysterio (who is in the game, according to the box), Electro. Any of those. That said, I hope this game remembers that Spider-Man can a) web people up and b) sense danger. Those are important. Other than that, maybe a game where if I have to collect gems, at least give me a good reason. Thanks.

Next issue: We finally begin.

Questprobe featuring Spider-Man #1

In the Hall of the Spider-King

Finally, let's begin...

I think I shall go with... pictures. 40 it is.

Wow, blue and a form of purple that could be red if you imagine hard enough with your heart. I'm down. Oh, and Mr. Cosmic Business Man is back. I really hope this time he's just hanging around in by a water cooler, talking about Knot's Landing or whatever aired the night before in 1984.

Wow. This one actually has 10 Marvel character in it. Please note that this includes The Chief Examiner, who is probably due for a comeback. I've spoilered the info for those who want to be surprised, but it's a nice mix of A, B and C listers, which is always fun.

Blah, blah, blah, more legal stuff and oh, the game just started. I really hope that the bad carpeting is a plot point. Maybe I should rip it up. I really have no idea where I am. The Daily Bugle? A building where science happens? But they have bad carpeting.

Please, PLEASE don't let there be any fuzzy space BS. Make directions have meaning this time. Anyway, I'm going to start by reading the sign.

Hmm... I'm not sure how I feel about "Spider-Man, I want you to..." I do like the idea I'm controlling Spider-Man, but I think I'd rather BE Spider-Man. Also, I think I'd prefer fewer words so as not to clog things up.

Wait, my mission is gem collecting and storage again? It couldn't be pieces of a device to defeat Doctor Octopus or something? Fine. I guess the premise of the game is that I'm on an Easter Egg hunt where the eggs are gems and villains keep getting in my way. Hopefully, I'll at least have some puzzles that aren't complete nonsense. Hey, I can wish, can't I?

I think I'm going to make this a short chapter, but first, let's see what this baby can do.

Oh, good start! OK, so maybe it doesn't mean anything yet, but at least it is something Spider-Man can do.

I also pull the carpet but am told Spider-Man is no vandal. This time, it doesn't sting quite so much.

Anyway, let's see what other Spider-Man actions this game can do.

It's like Scott Adams have never even heard of Spider-Man.

Oh well, I look forward to seeing what this game has to offer. BTW, where should I go next: North, East, South or West? I'll leave it up to anyone.

Next issue: Next time we finally begin. For reals this time.

Go WEST.

And commenting on the cast...

I really was not expecting Hydro-Man. I remember him from the 90s cartoon as some douchebag with stupid hair and a stupider voice who Spidey defeated by luring him far enough away from any water sources that he frickin' evaporated. Madame Web, I think was in the multi-part season series finale for that show.

Also who the hell is Ringmaster?

Still, very nice selection of villains! Lots of classic Spider-Man foes, unlike Hulk's game where they just drew random villains out of a bag.

Ahh, the Ringmaster, short hand indication that none of the Marvel writers felt very strongly about this storyline.

Also note that it says nothing about The Circus of Crime, so maybe he's confident that he can handle this one solo.

Or....

I don't know if Remembering Ringmaster would make Spider-Man mad.

Disapppointed, maybe, but not mad.

Questprobe featuring Spider-Man #2

Up the Down Elevator

Last time... I kind of took everything in and experimented a little bit. But now it's time to get stuff done. As per MetManMas' suggestion, I go west.

Wow, that's... cryptic. I mean, even if I didn't get a heads up on the villains in this one, the sand is a bit of a big clue, but that crib is... I feel like if this game had a soundtrack it might be like this.

BTW, when you look up scary nursery rhymes on youtube, everyone is trying to hard and it goes around to not being scary. This is the best I could do. Keep Internet Simple Stupids. Well, I guess I better look in a crib.

I'm going to be honest: I have no idea if this is baby formula or a formula like a magic science chemical from cartoons or if someone just wrote down a formula and left it in a crib. Maybe web formula? Why would a baby have my web fluid? So many questions and I expect few answers. I also try to mess around with the Sand, because if that's Sandman, I'd like to try to know now rather than later. While I can't kick sand in his face, I can kick sand so it becomes his face or... something. Anyway, nothing happens. I could go out the window, maybe... but I decide to try something else. I go the complete opposite direction and find this.

I... think the game remembered I've chosen to wall crawl, which is actually nice. But don't stick it in the middle of a sentence like that. I actually hopes this comes in handy when a baddy tries to open a trap door on me. I press the call button but aside from a "click" nothing happens. Thankfully, this game is actually better at knowing who Spider-Man is than I gave it credit for when I decide to open it myself.

And check it out... ANIMATION.

Keep in mind the version I have is less colorful and the animation is even weaker. But it's still something. So with the elevator open, I go inside.

I actually go up a couple floors, meaning this game is a little bigger than I expected. And hey, no fuzzy space BS (yet). The game describe the shaft as slimy and greasy so that might not matter, I'll keep it in mind.

I get to the top floor that the elevator shaft will take me to and find a hallway nearly identical to the one a few floors down. I decide to keep going forward and into the room opposite the elevator where I find...

Wallopin' websnappers, our first supervillain. Say hello to the leader of the Circus of Crime, the Ringmaster! Wow, something actually exciting to end on. Looking forward to the next one where I also get to explain exactly who this guy is. But not what any of the following nonsense is...

Huh, wonder why they inverted the colors on Spidey's suit. They got the coloring right on the title screen, palette limitations in your version considered.

And I was not expecting a baby crib.

Questprobe featuring Spider-Man #3

A Room With Two Knobs

OK, since we've just met our first villain, let's talk about... The Ringmaster.

Wait, I got a better picture.

There we are.

The Ringmaster's deal is what the name implies: he's an evil circus ringmaster. He was the son (though retconning for time, probably grandson) of some Nazi criminals who had an evil circus. Though he did not harbour any of their hateful beliefs, he did also have a desire to be in the circus industry, which wasn't dying yet when the character first appeared. However, the circus was unsuccessful, so using a device that his parents gained from Nazi supervillains, he turned his regular hat into a hypno-hat! And thus the Circus of Crime was born!

As you can imagine, these guys aren't powerhouses. The Circus basically just goes to a town, holds a show, hypnotizes everyone, steals from them and is on their way. The members often change but mostly they all have skills and abilities that, well, definitely make them formidable to your average joe, but these guys get stomped all over by superheroes.

I will say some positive stuff about them: they mostly seem to get the fact that they aren't powerhouses. These guys are only punching up and they usually figure out that their only chance is to just keep the hero distracted long enough for either the Ringmaster to do his thing or maybe get Princess Python's snake to take someone out. It often works... very briefly. Just enough for the Circus to almost seem like a threat.

Another nice thing is that they are one of those villain teams who aren't tied to any one hero. They just sort of float around from hero to hero, getting curbstomped. And I think they mostly get that they work best just avoiding the superhero scene altogether, though sometimes they get a bit more ambitious than they should.

That's a bold move Circus. I will also say this in their defense: despite being relatively weak adversaries, for some reason the Circus is never wholly put into the "loser" villain box. Marvel has fun with that. Often there are goofy dumb villains, usually ones originally introduced to be genuine threats and then after they don't go over well enough (or only as kitsch) they re-emerge often as comic relief characters. I'm talkin' the Gibbon, the Grizzly (who recently became a co-star in an Ant-Man comic), the Spot (who Marvel likes to goose with genuine coolness every now and then largely because he does have cool and visually interesting powers), The Walrus. And yep, most of them are Spidey villains. But the Circus... again, certainly not winners, but there is something about them that lets them completely avoid that category.

But here, Ringmaster is alone. Not smart. The Circus of Crime's only real advantage was numbers. There wasn't even a lot of them, but the fact is that alone, these guys don't have a lot going for them. Still, he does have hypnosis. What awful deeds will he do while Spider-Man is helpless?

Oh. He tells me to leave. And I do, because I am hypnotized and/or polite.

Well, I know enough about comics to know that his power comes from his hat. Maybe I should just take his hat.

I cannot get ye hat. Um. Well, maybe I should just talk with him. That's actually a pretty Spidey move (I don't even mean just quipping. Spidey often does just try to talk to his villains)

Oh. That was helpful. Thanks, Ringmaster. I should point out that this Questprobe improves things by allowing me to do two things. However, Ringmaster keeps hypnotizing me before I can actually complete my task. I'll need to find a way around this. I'm actually kind of happy with the puzzle so far in that there is a clear goal (though... Ringmaster doesn't seem to be doing anything particularly evil. Just sort of hanging out. Still, he is a criminal. But I guess I should move on until I think I have some ideas. So I go North.

Neat, a science lab. I feel like I called out Scott Adams a little too soon, a couple chapters before, as a science lab totally belongs in a Spider-Man game. I'm a little excited for where the game is headed. OK, nothing to use in here yet. Let's head south, then we will have covered all of the third floor.

OK, so before you said it was odd the lab had no chemicals, but I think it's weirder that there's an empty office with chemicals just lying on the floor. So, I guess I just scoop them up and put them in my pockets or something. OK, Spidey does have a utility belt with compartments so I guess he put them in those. Still, where the chemicals just... there? On the floor? That's very weird. I hope the acid was in a bottle or something. And that it was labelled so no one swigs some acid.

Well, I got some chemicals and an empty lab. Let's make some magic. I mix the carbonate and the acid together to make some hydrochloride, a drying agent. It's not useful yet, but it will be. I try to throw the powders into it but no can do. Anyway, I decide to check out the second floor

Oh, a mirror. Let's take a look.

AH! Clone saga! Oh, wait, that's just me. I bet this has something to do with Mysterio, but the game won't let me break it (BTW, after I finished this round of the game is when it occurred to me I should try to take it and use it on Ringmaster. It looks too big but that never stopped games like this before. Let's keep going in the other direction.

Oh. I'm outside. Cool. But the game won't let me go up and down so... thanks for running the fun of wall-crawling, game. That's all there is on the second floor. So I guess the game is actually smaller than I expected. Let's go back to the first floor. And head North, I haven't been there, yet.

Whoa, another C-list Spider-character. It's Madame Web. I think we are going in order of quality, except I haven't seen the Chief Examiner or Hydro-Man yet. Seems like a good place to stop.

Next issue: Oh, what a Madame Wed we weave!

EDIT: Also, a lot of villains.

My favorite memory of the Circus of Crime was when they warranted a two-parter in an early issue of Thor. Shortly after Thor managed to blow Ego The Living Planet to smithereens.

Because right after beating an entire planet to death in a Fist fight, that’s when A Clown Who Steals comes across as a big threat.

"By the beard of Odin! Is that clown... capering? Never in all the nine realms have I ever felt such delight!"

*Claps very hard, which breaks open a safe, which the Circus begins to steal from.*

Was that the story of the comic? Just wondering.

Been a while since I read it, but as I recall; Thor got amnesia and was wandering through the city when he stumbled upon the Circus of Crime, and the Ringmaster just convinced him that he was their missing strongman. And decided to use his Asgardian strength to steal much heavier things than what they usually target.

Closing your eyes helped stop ants from attacking them in Hulk's game, maybe doing the same in Spidey's will help you defeat the Ringmaster? I mean, the guy's hypnosis powers are reliant on you staring at his hat.

I didn't get into it (or rather, I didn't take any screen grabs so I forgot I tried it) but I did try that and it didn't work. The game screen did go dark but I guess the hat still worked somehow. But good idea. IO might try it again later in case there was a step I was missing. I'll also try the mirror later but I have my doubts it will work (of it it can be taken), especially since this game doesn't like the verb "use".

Yeah, I guess closing your eyes to defeat the Ringmaster would make too much sense in this case, unlike the utter madness that was The Incredible Hulk (Tm) closing his eyes, holding his nose, and putting wax in his ears to keep ants from attacking his face while he blindly moved towards the hole where Ultron caged up Ant-Man.

Questprobe featuring Spider-Man #4

...And the Spider Washed Him Out

OK, so last time out, we found Madame Web.

She's, like, an older lady with the power to see the future and sometimes shows up to give Spider-Man vague warnings and stuff. That's really about all I remember about her. Let's start the game again.

This game really knows how to bury the lead. It really wants us to know about how each office is empty with furniture removed. It takes them a while to get to whatever oddly-dressed goofball is standing in the room. Also, hey how about all the fucking machinery. You don't think that requires comment? Is that Web's future telling tech or life support or what? It's the craziest thing that basically anything you look at, the game says "you see nothing special", when whatever you are looking at is definitively special.

Anyway, Web's an old friend of mine, so lets talk to her.

Oh, neat. OK, I got to say that despite the fact that this is about gem collection, this FEELS a lot more true to Spider-Man than the last game did to the Hulk. In the last one, you had to type "Hint", which I never figured out. In this version, a character uses her in universe power to give you hints. I am way down for this. Let's start with the villain we met already.

Oh. OK. That didn't help as much as I'd like. But maybe I'm not in a position to beat him yet. I could ask about other characters I know will be in the game, but I'll play it like I don't know these guys are here. So instead, I'll keep heading south to the other end of the hallway. There are two more doors and I explore one. Remember the last game had an exploding egg I couldn't disarm until near the end of the game? Well, there's another one of those deals. So I restart and decide I'll visit that room when I know I can disarm it (and no, eating the egg didn't work this time. Anyway, I go to the Southernmost room and find...

THE LIZARD. Kind of. I mean, body wise, yes, but the head looks a little chewed up. As you can see, I tried to fight him but he's too much of a match for me. He doesn't actually seem interested in retaliating though. He's just... standing there. I decide to talk to him. I expect him to complain about humanity and to go on about his plan to turn humans into lizard men but instead he merely says "You won't get MY gem." Duly noted Lizard. Seems like this game is having me fight the Lizard over his property. "Who is the REAL monster?" Asks Scott Adams. I maintain it is the Lizard, but point taken, none the less.

Hmm... Well, I stand around for a while and it's getting hard to maintain eye contact with the Lizard and no one wants to make the next move, so I sort of... slink out. I decide to head out and ask Madame Web about this situation.

Oh, neat. I actually like this. It require some science knowledge. Though this is probably harder to understand in the pre-internet age. I'm guessing it is the Chloride, but I'm going to look around a bit first. I check the room with the crib again and find...

I'm seeing a pattern. It also occurs to me that when I was in this room last time, I was crawling on the wall. Which could be why Sandy woke up this time and not last time. (I also don't remember spotting a gem last time, so I'm not sure). Man, this game feels so much more thoughtful than the last one in that respect. If I'm right, wall-crawling actually matters. Though you think Sandman would be keeping his eyes open rather than waiting to see if people are stepping on him. Anyway, as Spider-Man villains go, Sandman isn't super-evil or anything, just a crook. Heck, there were occasions he was a superhero and a reserve Avenger. But I'll get into Sandman's backstory later. I'm running into a lot of villains today and am trying to limit myself one extended character explanation for post (though here, I'm doing two smaller one's for characters I don't know that well). Anyway, my point is, maybe I can talk to this guy.

"You'll never get MY gem!" he replies. I'm seeing a very children's book like pattern to this adventure. Seriously, I read a lot of kids books these days, and that's exactly how it reads to me, especially since everyone seems to say it. Before I head to Madame Web for some advice, I check one more room. Let's see...

WHY DO YOU THINK I CARE ABOUT THE OFFICE FURNITURE! Also, oh, hey, Hydro-Man. Or an unfortunate looking facsimile thereof. Yep, this is the other guy I'm wasting a small amount of space explaining.

Hydro-Man is a man made of water. He's kind of an asshole. There's not a lot too him. A scientific accident turned him into Hydro-Man. Spidey was kind of responsible by accidentally knocking him into the water where the science happened. That's about the size of it. He's really a c-lister despite having a really useful power.

Let's look and talk.

Ugh. Really? The baddies couldn't say anything slightly different? Even some colourfully cliched taunting? Well, who cares. I got a drying agent, so I can take this guy out.

That must be an embarrassing way to die. OK, maybe Spider-Man didn't kill the guy, since the character keeps coming back but... can you really be sure. Anyway, let's get the gem from inside the aquarium.

What? *Sigh* I try a bunch of other shit before doing this...

Putting aside that the aquarium doesn't seem empty, that seems excessive to get a gem out of a fish tank. I decide to take my booty (and the gem) to Madame Web.

Ah, so Madame Web is the new fuzzy place. Again, so much better, despite the fact that the villains seem to have no actual plan and are just standing around, taunting me with all their gem-havery. Good thing I murdered that one guy so I could take his jewels and work solely to earn points on some weird scoring system for unknown reasons. SPIDER-MAN!

Well, that's humbling. But it promises to be a much richer game. Also, gems aren't just... sitting there, waiting to be found. Hey, let's get some advice about Sandman.

Looks like I'll be trying to take out The Lizard and Sandman next. Wish me luck.

Next issue: "You'll never get MY gem!" (probably)

my chief memories of Hydro Man were that he was inexplicably a major recurring villain in the 90s cartoon (WHY?!?!) and that he was Shockers only actual friend in Superior Foes of Spider-Man, where they bonded over their mutual D-List Spider-Man Villain status.

The weird part is Hydro-Man is just a less interesting Sandman... who never appeared in the 90's show.

I had that exact thought when this LP reminded me that Hydro-Man existed. Dude's basically Sandman if he was an asshole jock and had a weakness to evaporation.

Questprobe featuring Spider-Man #5

Mystery Science Theater 2018

Last time I ran into a bunch of super-villains and defeated one of them: Hydro-Man. But I still have Sandman and The Lizard to defeat and a bunch we haven't even seen yet. So next, let's try seeing if my very simple plan to defeat the Sandman will work.

Sandman is one of Spidey's toughest opponents and one of the game's A-listers, despite the fact that his goals are usually pretty modest (financial gain and occasional revenge or misguided personal mission). Flint Marko was a regular-type criminal who made the mistake of hiding from the authorities in an area with a lot of sand and a lot of radioactivity and one thing lead to another and boom, guy is made entirely out of sand. That's all he needed to become a super-criminal after he realized how powerful he was.

Sandman is pretty powerful. He can't be KOed and he is in complete control of ever molecule of sand. Plus, if he is near more sand, he can make that part of his body to make himself bigger and more powerful. He can shapeshift and make his body hard or soft as needed. He might not have any world conquering aspirations, but he is a force to be reckoned with. Luckily, Spider-Man is such a smart guy, often coming up with alternative solutions to taking him up. In his first appearance, he just sucked him up with an industrial strength vacuum. Also, dude gets turned to glass a lot.

(That was from when he was wearing his ugly costume that was, and I can't believe I would EVER say this about a character design, was overly-Kirby-esque.)

Though the villain doesn't have some big tragic origin stories (save for some stuff added in after the fact that most folks don't remember), he is often is produced as, well, not likable by any stretch, but often has stories where he is more sympathetic than a lot of Spider-Foes. It's not unusual for him to be involved in stories where he is on some misguided crusade or his own power is out of control and a danger to everyone about. More recently, his own powers and how they are defeated tend to feature stories where it's really messed with his mind. And as stated before, Sandman even reformed and became a superhero for a little while.

But here, he is an enemy. What can I do to take this guy out? Well, I know the end game are gems for some reason so I follow Madame Web's advice and crawl on the wall. Sandman doesn't bother me. Then I take the gem from the crib. OK. I decide to wake him up, as I'm curious if he's going to try to steal his gem back or something

He seems fine with just chatting. Actually, I think he wants to give me a high-five! "Way to go!", he probably says. Next, I decide to check the elevator shaft. I decide to give each part a look, just in case.

Hey, I found something!

This game is better, but it really is just a glorified Easter Egg Hunt, isn't it? I feel like I've found every major room, so now it's probably time to look for secret doors and stuff. I get off on the second floor, a place that I suspected was weird due to the mirror and the weird geography that doesn't match with the other floors, because as soon as you leave the elevator, you are outside. I leave the elevator and instantly...

Hey, it's Mysterio. This is another a-list villain. He doesn't have any powers but he's a master of special effects and bamboozles his foes with illusions and trickery. He's a lot of fun.

Mysterio is Quentin Beck, a special effects man who, after his career stalls, decides to become a super criminal, using clever trickery to over come Spider-Man's spider-sense and webs. Spidey uses his wits to beat him and Mysterio from then on divides his time to regular criminal behavior and looking for revenge on Spider-Man. Often it is forms of mind-fuckery, such as tricking Spider-Man into thinking he's been shrunk, or that time he created a psychiatrist persona, trying to convince Spider-Man to unmask (only to be interrupted by J. Jonah Jameson).

Mysterio is rarely sympathetic, but he is a fun villain since his plans are often creative (when the writers are good) and he is visually interesting (there's something novel about the fishbowl head). He's going to be in the next movie and part of me wonders why they've held off on him for so long. My best guess is that he's almost TOO interesting, since you can have all sorts of visual flair (that later is revealed to be flim flam and humbug).

Anyway, it looks like I was right about this floor. Let's take another look.

Yep, this is probably some sort of illusion. Initially, I wrote this off as the limitations of a Scott Adams game, but this is actually a clever bit of trickery. Unfortunately, I don't know how to convince Spider-Man to get on the floor. Dude's too scared. I say "get down" and "Stand up" and the game says no. Better chat with Madame Web for ideas.

"ly", Madame Wed. "It maps oddLY". Well, pedantry aside (and a mistake I've probably made variations of countless times), that does confirm my suspicions. I go back and try a bunch of other stuff. Eventually, I decide to take a literal leap of faith.

I close my eyes and jump. The game is fine with this.

OK, Spider-Man, you should realize that you are aware this is some sort of illusion, right? Just.... Stand up. You're embarrassing me in front of Mysterio.

Oh, hey dude.

I decide to close my eyes and crawl to the walls. I then feel around for doors.

I find a couple rooms with gems in them. I don't know if I'm also supposed to try to catch Mysterio or not, since I seem to just straight up murder Hydro-Man, yet leave Sandman to his own devices. He does seem to appear and disappear repeatedly, so maybe later I'll stop him or leave him to run around this room forever.

But he might be running around for a reason. I'll try to catch him later. He might be holding onto a gem.

Anyway, I go in the elevator and decide to look around. I realize the reason I couldn't go higher is because there's an elevator in the way. As far as I know, the call button doesn't work. I wonder if there's another way to move it. Let's see... Wait, am I strong? Listen, bud!

Yes.

So I move it and move up and find...

Yes! YES! This whole adventure was taking part in J. Jonah Jameson's apartment building! For some reason! (But it also has a lab? I'm really curious about this building now.

Next issue: I rummage throw J.J.J.'s stuff!

Hydro-Man strikes me as a guy who tries to high-five too hard. To prove some sort of dominance. Same with Sandman but I hate him less.

Of course, Hydro Man giving a too-hard high-five would take his entire arm off.

He really needs to be more mindful of when to act like a jerk.

The image tag for reformed Sandman is broken.

Anyway, I don't know much about Sandman 'cuz he wasn't in the 90s cartoon and I haven't watched either Spider-Man 3* or much of other Spider-Man cartoons. But I do know Mysterio. As we've also seen from the Scarecrow's fear gas in Batman's Arkham games (well, two of them), a master illusionist can be a very dangerous thing. In Old Man Logan's alternate reality, Mysterio No.3 tricked Wolverine into slaughtering all of his fellow X-Men.

* Yes, I know Sandman being the real killer of Uncle Ben was an invention of the first Sony movie-verse. It's like how Joker being the man who killed Batman's parents was an invention of the Tim Burton film, an attempt to try to give the hero more personal stakes when it comes to the bad guy.

I... I wasn't going to go into that. Actually, I never got around to seeing Spider-Man 3. As much as I love Spider-Man, the bad reviews scared me away. But I really don't have a particularly strong feeling about making the Sandman as Uncle Ben's killer.

It’s honestly the biggest problem I had with the movie.

“Hey kid, hope you didn’t make any important life decisions based on the identity of the man who killed your uncle. Because it turns out it was some other guy who did it.”
