Yae Kurosawa never came back. She kept running, escaping the village with the folklorist's assistant, Ryozo Munakata. And if those names sound familiar, it's because they are -- from Fatal Frame 1. Yae married Ryozo and together they had a child named Mikoto before Yae became plagued with ill health. A full-fledged folklorist himself by that time, he decided to both further his research as well as give his wife a healthy rest in the country by purchasing and moving into the Himuro Mansion. There Mikoto found the Camera Obscura, which Yae used until it drove her mad and she eventually ended her own life. Yae and Ryozo are Miku and Mafuyu Hinasaka's great-grandparents.
Imagine the fun they all would have had at family dinners.

We're gaining on Mayu now! Unless she left Tachibana House while we were trying to figure out how to get the front door of this place open. That would suck. Maybe her charm will give us a hint as to her location?

That's it, sis. I'm getting my own room. With a lock. And a deadbolt. And a guard dog. And a moat.

Anyway...

This is actually two ghosts, Dazed Twin and Dazed Doll. They appear immediately after the chapter heading fades from the screen. We should have gotten credit for capturing them both at once (center the camera on the space between the two) but we won't know for sure until the spirit list unlocks at the end of the game.

There's nothing of interest in here, and only one exit. The next room has dolls hanging from the ceiling. That's not creepy at all!

Another two-fer.

Mio bumped into one of the dolls on the way to getting this item.

The hanging doll room leads to a hallway, and another ghostly pair.

This hallway contains two large, nearly identical open rooms and a number of closed doors. Let's check out the rooms first.

These are good places to drag ghosts if we get ambushed in the hallway. Fighting in hallways sucks.

Here's the other room. Neither one is particularly interesting.

Here's a floor map. We came from the south, so let's start checking doors bottom to top, and left to right.

DOOR NUMBER ONE: Bleah.

DOOR NUMBER TWO: We've got a family altar room, and a couple items for our trouble.

I ask myself the same question constantly.

DOOR NUMBER THREE: Looks like a staircase landing. Up is for after fully exploring the main floor, so we'll come back to this one later. There's also a save point off to the side of the stairs, and another door leading north which is locked. Moving on!

DOOR NUMBER FOUR: No love.

DOOR NUMBER FIVE: Here we have a room for twins. Everything in it comes in pairs.

This is a shadowy dresser next to the door.

There's another door in the corner. Attempting to leave the room through it triggers another ghost appearance.

I can't imagine why these two didn't appear in those gum commercials.

It doesn't show up well in the glare of the flashlight, but the ghosts left behind a glowing item on this cushion.

I became one with Azami... But now she's gone.

I can't talk about it anymore.

Father brought Azami back.

All I could do was apologize.

She forgave me. The killing is over now. No more. I'll never hurt anyone again.

I'll never let anyone kill again.

Father says Azami has been possessed, and he's trying to kill her.

He's trying to kill Azami. I won't let him do it.

I won't let that happen anymore.
Holy shit, that's dark.

These girls look maybe eight years old, so there doesn't seem to be a specific age range for Sacrifice Time; just whenever the * starts acting up, I guess. I'd make a joke about toddlers or something, but there's honestly too much shit in the news lately about actual kids becoming accidental killers and I really don't feel like it.

So here's something to think about instead: how did Azami's dad bring her back to life? I mean, that's a good trick, right?

We were leaving the room before we were so rudely interrupted, weren't we?

WOULD YOU LIKE TO BUY SOME GIRL SCOUT COOKIES?

WE HAVE SAMOAS.

Throughout this cut scene, one of the girls has ordinary footstep sounds, while the other one sounds sort of clockworky.

Now it's time to beat up some little girls! Twin Spirit and Doll Spirit just want to give Mio hugs. Deadly hugs. And while they're both nicely in the shot here, they tend to split up and come at you from different angles. Their MO is to slowly walk forward and then run with arms outstretched when they get close enough. Not too awful, but to make things more interesting only the Twin Spirit can take damage. You can waste a lot of film snapping pictures of the wrong girl if you're unlucky. However, hitting either one of them with a zero shot will interrupt both and make them recoil. Once the Twin is defeated, they both "die" and the battle is over.

Now we're in another long hallway. Here is a curtained alcove.

There doesn't seem to be anything else to do here, but if we look out the window through the camera viewfinder, we can see another room across the way...

ALSO THIN MINTS YOU KNOW YOU LIKE THIN MINTS!

I know that's a boy, shut up, boys can be Girl Scouts if they want to.

Since this ghost only appears if you use the camera to look out the window, it's easily missed.

The other end of the hallway has two doors. The first is -- ugh -- another doll room.

There are two life-sized dolls on pedestals, next to some kind of machine. One of the dolls seems to be half-finished. It's also becoming plain how Azami's dad "brought her back".

The headless doll is causing the camera to react.

That's the family altar room we saw earlier.

And we finally learn the name of the other twin. So far in the game we've got: Mio and Mayu, Yae and Sae, Itsuki and Mutsuki, and Akane and Azami. Clearly there is some kind of Japanese law enforcing twee matching names for twins, in addition to the coordinated outfits.

Before we head back to the altar room, there is one other door in the hallway.

We've been here before! This is the previously locked door in the projector room in the other section of Kiryu house. Now we can freely move between the two parts of the house!

And speaking of film projectors...

This film depicts the Repentance and the immediate events leading up to it. Which begs the question: who the hell is the filmmaker? Any villager would have stopped the fleeing girls instead of passively recording them. And it's not like camera equipment was small or silent back in the day; Itsuki should have noticed someone following them with a movie camera at the very least.

...am I overthinking this? I'm probably overthinking this.

Hey look guys, this is what happened during the Repentance! Moving on...

A quick trip back through the twins' room to the main hall gets us to the family altar room. The camera is definitely picking up something, but I'm having a hard time pinpointing where. There's also a voice mumbling incessantly, just low enough that I can't actually understand any of it.

Wait... what's on the wall there?

Ah. The room we're looking into is that first one, the one that was locked. Our ghost continues babbling to himself for a little longer, then goes quiet. A second later, there's the sound of a door unlocking.

Think we can get into that room now?

Guess.

I have made a grave mistake. The twins had at last become one again...

I was wrong to make that doll.

I think Azami was trying to tell me where the head and hands of the doll are hidden.

They're hidden in a box, somewhere in the house...
Do we have a new objective? I think we have a new objective.

Immediately after we finish picking up objects, Azami's ghost appears behind us.

And we have a new memo to read.

Twins are known to share each other's pain.

The Remaining bore a vestige on her own throat of the mark her sister received during the ritual.
Really? Someone who is forced to sacrifice their twin might not want to hang out and play Mario Kart with the people who made them commit murder anymore? What an odd reaction to have.

At any rate, we're looking for a doll head and two arms, likely hidden in boxes. There's a box right here and it looks full of arms and things -- how silly would it be if one of the doll parts we need were right here in this room?

...what, seriously?

Guess not!

This is neither a vanishing ghost nor an attack. Azami Kiryu wants to help us find the missing doll parts, so she occasionally shows up when we're headed in the right direction. She can't be photographed.

The first floor is pretty thoroughly explored already; time to go see what the upstairs looks like.

It looks like another hallway, mostly, part of which is inaccessible due to the roof having fallen in.

If that figure whips off the blanket and reveals itself to be David Bowie, I'm seriously done you guys.

While photographing the ghost we could see an otherwise hidden glowing item. Let's grab that.

There's something hidden in this table, too.

Back in the hallway, there is a corner that seems to have been used as storage. There are boxes here! Also:

Azami's spirit will hang around forever until we photograph her, regardless of how close we get or where else we decide to go first. Once we've snapped her, we get some autoloot.

Akane isn't a person anymore.

She looks so much like my daughter...

Azami must be killed, again.
Did I or did I not say that dolls are evil and steal souls? VINDICATION

Here's a map of the upstairs. That section to the right looks like it's probably the part of the house we explored earlier. Maybe we can unlock the door to that section, too?

On the way...

Yup! Now all the locked doors separating the two parts of Kiryu house are unlocked. The second floor is very small compared to the sprawling first floor, too.

Only one way left to go, and it's another staircase going down...

SPIDERMAN KISS Y/N?

I guess not...

It's a battle! Having just watched her relive the plummet to her doom that took her life in the first place, we must now fight... Fallen Woman.

...

...

...

...

.

.

GOSH IT SURE IS A GOOD THING THAT THE OBJECTIFICATION AND SEXUALIZATION OF WOMEN IN VIDEO GAMES IS A MYTH PERPETUATED BY THE WHITE KNIGHT SJW FEMINAZI ZOE QUINN LOVING GAMING JOURNALISTS OTHERWISE SOMEONE MIGHT ACTUALLY THINK IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO INCLUDE A FIGHT WITH A HALF DRESSED GHOST LADY WHO GIGGLES AND MOANS AND HAS A HILARIOUS NAME THAT MEANS "HARLOT" BUT IS ALSO A PUN ON HOW SHE DIED LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

*sigh* Let's do this so we can move onto something else. Fallen Woman broke all of her bones when she died, so all she can do is writhe suggestively in our direction. When she gets close enough, she grabs Mio's ankles. While her movement is slow, the actual attack (and zero shot moment) is very fast. It's easiest to just whittle her health down when she's far away using cheap film; it takes a bunch of hits to down her, but it's very safe.

Periodically, she disappears and re-falls near Mio, presumably to prevent us from constantly staying out of reach. Although I tried to move away when she does it, it doesn't seem to actually be an attack.

And that's enough of that. Look -- items!

If this turns out to be a sex tape film reel, someone at Tecmo is getting a stern letter, let me tell you what.

It turns out that this room connects to that hallway with all the doors. We're out of new places to explore, so we might as well head back to the section of the house with the film projector and see what's on our new movie.

It's the Kusabi making-of video. None of these are really that impressive, but I'm committed to showing them now. They're totally skippable.

The hallway outside the projector room seems promising.

Yay! Where to next?

Wait... did we seriously never go down this hallway before? Whoops! That little dead-end on the left is that alcove with the window where the ghost kid popped up. Remember that there was another room visible through the window?

Are... are we actually assembling a Zooey Deschanel RealDoll?

Akane never leaves Azami's side for even a second, always whispering things to her.

I don't know what she says, but at least she seems to be slowly returning to her former self.

If we didn't have this ritual, Azami wouldn't have become a butterfly, and Akane wouldn't have lost her spirit.

This book is always obtained when you pick up the third doll part, regardless of what order you collect them in.

...Well, okay then.

That's the last of the doll parts. While we could probably head to the doll room to try and reassemble the broken doll, maybe it's a good idea to look for an instruction manual or something in the workshop.

This hallway also leads to the staircase room. Unlocking shortcuts is important!

The girls attack again in the main hall. This is actually a random encounter.

The differences between the twin and doll are incredibly subtle. This is the doll; her face is entirely obscured by hair. The ghost of the actual girl has a visible mouth and chin.

There are no more interruptions on the way back to the doll maker's room. Looks like there's something here!

Between the two notes it looks like we still need.... something.... to get the doll mechanism to work. The dollmaker says he'll keep the doll's "soul" with him, but where is he? This was his workshop.

Well, there is one other doll-themed room to try.

Bingo! The doll maker's ghost mostly attacks by animating the various dolls that are hanging around the room, sending them after Mio.

He goes semi-invisible to protect himself while he's spellcasting. Dodge the dolls and find him! The dolls can't be damaged with the camera anyway.

He looks like such a nice old man.

Another new function, and a nice recharge of Type-14 film! This function allows us to equip up to three lenses at once, instead of just one. We can switch between them with a button press in battle.

We definitely have all the bits now; time to brave the doll room.

And here's the puzzle. There are only a certain number of moves we can do before it resets, but like all the other puzzles we can keep trying as long as we need to. Given the instructions above, it's just a matter of math; use the right button until the dolls are facing opposite directions, then keep clicking left until they face each other.

Who would have guessed that one of the mechanism dolls would come to life and attack us?

Akane is about to get a zero shot to the face here.

Now that we've gotten the twin ghosts out of the way -- again -- the panel behind the dolls slides up, revealing a ladder going down. Looks like this is our ticket to Tachibana House!

Here's a Memo to wrap up the Akane/Azami storyline.

Quote:

But Mr. Kiryu never managed to destroy the doll.

In the end, his daughter Akane, controlled by the possessed doll, strangled and killed him.
Wait. I thought the doll was definitely not possessed by Azami, as evidenced by that diary and the way she appeared and asked that the doll be killed? Also, how does Mio know how Mr. Kiryu died? I really don't like when the game gives her knowledge that she shouldn't have.

Well, nothing left here but random encounters. Time to check out the earth bridge to Tachibana.

This passageway doesn't seem to have much going on, but there is one thing we can snag.

Cheery! Welp, only one way to go now.

ohcrap

Mio stands there fish-faced while Sae advances in that slasher movie / Pépe le Pew saunter.

Good idea! Let's exorcise her and end this!

Wh-where'd she go?

Mio scans around frantically, then lowers the camera and --

Run away!

Wait... why is your hand empty there, Mio?

Mio?

SERIOUSLY? YOU PICK THAT CAMERA UP RIGHT NOW YOUNG LADY

...or run away like a scared little girl that works too...

Good going, Percy.

Yeah, got that, thanks. Wait... the flashlight too? OH COME ON

The game is just gloating now.

Look, if I were being chased by some psychotic killer ghost with jam all over her kimono, I sure as hell wouldn't stop because I dropped my vintage Polaroid camera.

And besides, I'm pretty sure the dangerous ghosts didn't even start appearing until Mio and Mayu actually found the camera. There might be a connection here.

I was already somewhat behind on turning the video capture to screenshots, and then my mom called last night and informed me that she's going to be in Michigan this weekend. Surprise!

So.... update will be next Friday instead of this weekend.

Sorry!

When last we left Mio, she had spectacularly failed her DEX check and wound up tossing her only weapon at the feet of Sae, the scary murder ghost.

Well done. Now get your butt back in that tunnel and fetch that camera.

... Of course it's not that easy. We're going to have to find the "Heaven Bridge", run back through Kiryu House, and reenter the tunnel from the other side. All without any means of defending ourselves. Buckle up!

At least we made it into Tachibana House. We're in what appears to be a storeroom. And storerooms mean loot!

I guess we can't put it off any longer. Let's go check out the rest of the house.

OH COME ON

As always, Sae will one-touch kill us. Mio runs along the hallway, but the first door she comes across is sealed.

The curtained alcove is a dead end. Sae is slow, but having to backtrack is still not a great idea.

Using the map during this chase sequence is useful to help spot doors, as well as to make sure we're facing in the right direction. Fixed camera angles can mean sudden perspective shifts, and accidentally charging straight into the arms of the death wraith is an embarrassing game over.

This looks promising...

... or like a closet.

Only one place left to try.

Phew! A return to color means we're safe for now.

We're at the bottom of a staircase. Another door leads to more of the first floor, and while I would normally insist on exploring the entire floor before changing altitude, we're kind of powerless right now. And we know that the bridge between houses is on the second storey. So...

We go up.

We need to have a serious discussion-slash-intervention about this habit you have of disappearing from locked rooms. For someone who never wants to be alone, I've sure spent most of this game trying to track you down.

Remember earlier, when Mayu turned into Sae? Yeah, she's doing it again.

And now it's time to run. Again.

Only one way to go.

This is the first of a series of interconnected chambers. They all look pretty much alike, and we won't be exploring until the immediate danger has passed.

Two doors out of here, but the left one is blocked.

Second room.

Entering the third room triggers a cut scene. Mio hears something at the door and turns nervously toward the sound.

It's Mayu's voice!

Of course we will immediately rush forward and let you in, dear sister!

For a given value of "let you in" that actually means "keep running" because exactly how stupid do you think we are, anyway?

Another closet.

Maybe we should pick that up..? But then we would be walking around with a creepy doll in our inventory. Let's just leave it here instead. It's not like it looks immediately useful or anything.

Back to Sae speaking, now that she's figured out she can't fool us. We're actually safe in this closet, but we can't stay here forever.

That door straight ahead leads to the last of the connecting rooms.

We just so happen to have a key for that!

The door starts to creak open behind Mio.

Mio spots a closet. What the hell, it worked the last time!

She crouches down amongst the household goods while footsteps echo ominously just outside the closet door.

I wonder if Sae sucked this badly at hide-and-seek in life, too.

In a rare display of common sense, Mio stays put for a little while longer before exiting the closet.

The game informs us that a draft coming through the cracks smells like outdoor air.

What's this doohickey over here?

Oh noes, the door-opening puzzle is missing a doll! If only we had not left that one in the closet in the next room over! Not that there was actually an option to pick it up at all, mind. I'd complain again about lazy fetch quests, but the point of this segment is really the tension of being pursued while helpless, not exploration.

Back to get the doll...

Which we obtained without incident! Maybe Sae got bored and found some other living twin to torment.

Or not.

Mio jogs determinedly back toward the northern door, and Sae does not follow her in quite yet.

This puzzle is similar to the other one, though the buttons move the dolls by different degrees. We aren't given a refresher on the control scheme, so if we didn't write it down before we just have to do our best. To make matters even more annoying, this puzzle has a 60-second time limit, after which Sae will burst in and murdilate us. I was prepared to try it honestly a couple times before using the internet to cheat the hell out of it, but to my surprise I actually got it on the first try.

And safe. Tachibana House can't be reentered from the bridge; the door locks automatically. Both of the bridges between houses are one-way.

Some hostile ghosts appear while we're navigating Kiryu House back to the tunnel. They're all of the slow-and-easy variety, and don't pursue farther than a room or two.

There's a new item in Azami and Akane's room.

This is a Woman In Dark, who we have not actually met before. It's super frustrating to not have a camera handy, since we need her to complete the spirit list. This is her only guaranteed appearance in the game, so we'll just have to hope we encounter her randomly when we can actually fight her.

Back in the Earth Bridge (Tunnel)! A vanishing ghost guards our missing stuff. Shouldn't the glowing filament be absent while we're cameraless? Way to break immersion, game!

Finally. We should tie those objects to Mio's wrists, like mittens.

Back inside Tachibana, with the camera!

We were not able to examine this door previously, as Sae had appeared between Mio and it, but it has the same plot seal on it as the other one down this corridor.

Most plot-sealed doors require us to go find and photograph something before they unlock, but not the doors in Tachibana. The seal is strictly there to bar access to players who haven't retrieved the camera yet.

This... looks familiar. In case it's not obvious, Tachibana and Kiryu Houses are mirrors of one another, though only some of the rooms are identical in function. Tachibana also has a much larger upstairs, as most of the second storey of Kiryu was cut off by the collapsed roof.

Anyway, the projector is pre-loaded with a reel of film, which starts playing as Mio walks into the room. It's more highlights from the Repentance.

I keep expecting one of the figures to step out of the screen and attack. That this does not happen is kind of disappointing.

This is a well. You might think that there is something to it.... But in fact it is just an ordinary well.

Another movie! Fire up the popcorn popper and check out Woman In Box... crawling out of her box. Again, the fact that she does not crawl out of the screen is seriously a missed trick.

There's a kimono crate at the top of the stairs, mostly obscured by the dialogue box here.

We haven't looted explored this section of the upstairs yet.

This is like the Blast lens, only more powerful. It damages ghosts and causes knock-back, even without a zero shot. This one will be upgraded as soon as possible.

I whispered to Yae that I would come for them on the day of the ceremony.

Yae tensed for a moment, then acted like she didn't hear, and left. It seems they may really be planning to leave before the ceremony occurs.

That means Itsuki must still be somewhere in the village too.
Green diaries belong to young Munakata.

This house is absolutely chock full of closets.

Some areas are still inaccessible, though like with Kiryu House, locked doors can be opened from the other direction.

Back downstairs again, here's that sealed door from the chase sequence.

This is another twin room. At a guess, this was Itsuki and Mutsuki's room.

Itsuki's friend came to the house.

I got scared, so I hid.

I couldn't give him the key.

The middle dresser is partly open, and a glowing item ball can sort of be seen inside it.

Examining the dresser through the camera will cause the doors to swing open by themselves.

In the hallway outside the twins' room there's another sealed door.

But then I got distracted by this item and didn't enter it after unsealing it.

This house seems much better preserved than Kiryu. All of the internal sliding doors are still intact.

Finally back to that door we unsealed earlier. It leads to a clock hall exactly like the one in Kiryu.

Let's head back upstairs.

If Mio had any sense at all, she'd quietly slip away from the girl who can spontaneously turn into a supernatural insta-killer.

See? We can't even get in anyway. It's fate.

Really getting tired of getting blamed for all of Yae's shit over here. Seriously.

Anyway, this is a good stopping point. Tune in next time where we spend some time with Chitose Tachibana, who is actually good at playing hide-and-seek.

And here's one last photo op for the road:

You're fucking cold sometimes, Mio.

Hey, look -- an LP update just in time for Halloween!

... a year late! Sorry about that. >< Life exploded last October, and then surgery happened, and then moving, and now I've finally just about gotten my shit together. A little.

So, where were we? Oh yeah:

Mayu is once again on the other side of a locked door, and a new ghost is blaming us for things we didn't do. For us, this is Tuesday.

Following the ghost girl in the red kimono, we reach a door at the end of a hallway. It's barred on this side, so Mio is able to unlock it.

The door leads to a hallway with some stairs and a little open room. There is a jingling noise like a bell, and as Mio explores the room there are also thumping and rustling sounds.

What happened on the day of the ceremony???

Itsuki gave me a bell.

My eyes are not too good. The bell will tell him if I go near a dangerous place.

Itsuki said he will always come when he hears the bell.

He said even if I am hiding away and crying, he will find me.
Is it kindness or cruelty to keep the little girl in the dark about her brother being sacrificed? I honestly can't decide.

There's more stuff to be found here before we go investigating weird noises.

To find the source of the odd sounds, we need to go back into the hallway and down a short flight of stairs. This little storage cupboard is directly below the room that we were just in.

This seems like a good idea that will end well.

I did not see that coming. Did you see that coming? I did not see that coming.

Here's our first battle with Crimson Kimono. She's shown in the upstairs room here; fighting in the hallway sucks, so luring her into a relatively open area is important.

This ghost spends a lot of time weeping motionlessly, only to teleport and then cry some more. Occasionally she rushes Mio with outstretched arms. Despite the fixed camera angles in this little room not being the best for visibility, Crimson Kimono went down pretty easily.

Defeating her automatically wins us that diary that we saw in the cutscene.

This is a child who could really have used a therapist and some meds for her anxiety. Forced to live without them due to being alive during old-timey rural Japan, she spent a lot of time hiding out in small dark places like closets in order to feel safe. It... kind of backfired.

Continuing to explore the hallway.

Quote:
What were they trying to keep from getting in...?
Mice. Epic mice.

The next room hasn't been boarded up, and it's somewhere we've been before -- this is the series of interconnected rooms that Sae chased us through at the beginning of the chapter. We couldn't explore them properly before, so let's do so now.

In the second room:

I wonder how Itsuki and Mutsuki are doing? The letter Itsuki sent worries me...

I asked around, and was told that Itsuki and Mutsuki died of an illness. There was no mention of anything like this in the letters we exchanged
You think maybe if your pen-pal died he might not be able to write about it on account of being dead? Just a thought.

I wonder if he ran away from the village?

If not, then he has to be here somewhere.
Again, that doesn't really follow. Munakata is kind of bad at logic. If you know that Itsuki was looking for a way out of the village, and you don't believe literally everyone in the village when they say that he died, why wouldn't it be a possibility that he did in fact leave the village? THEY'RE HIDING HIM FROM ME is a pretty ridiculous conspiracy theory on the face of it.

I mean, yes, okay, the village was actually hiding Itsuki from the outsiders, but it's still a stupid thing to suspect given the host of way more likely scenarios.

There's one more diary in this room, hidden in the corner. This one was a pain to get, requiring some annoying pixel-perfect clicking.

I wonder if he was trying to help Yae and Sae escape from the village?
Munakata doesn't seem to question the notion that "escaping" the village is way more complicated than knotting some bedsheets and climbing out the window one night with a polka-dotted hobo pack slung over your shoulder.

The third room is empty, but does contain that closet where Mio hid from Sae.

And the final room...

Super film! That'll come in handy later.

Crimson Kimono is hiding in this closet as well! And she still doesn't like us.

Here she breaks out one of her nastier attacks. After a particularly heartwrenching wail, CK (can I call you CK? Great, thanks babe. *fingerguns*) huddles in on herself, causing the lights to go out. That gray blob in the center of the image is Mio's flashlight. CK starts charging around under cover of darkness, trying to grab Mio. We have to keep moving until the effect wears off, around thirty seconds or so.

This is another reason not to fight this ghost in a hallway if we can at all help it; we need room to maneuver.

Defeating CK is satisfying, but we still haven't found the key that Itsuki gave her. We'll need to keep looking.

That's it for this wing unless we want to try to cross back over to Kiryu house, but there are still some areas on the eastern side of the second floor that we haven't visited yet.

Such as this pointless tiny storage room. Why are you even here if you're not going to provide Mio with the loot she needs to give her life meaning?

wait what.

... Yeah, so now we're locked in this closet. No attacks appear to be forthcoming, though... Maybe the camera?

Fortunately, seeing the writing on the walls triggers the door to unseal itself and we're able to continue on our way.

The final hallway to the east contains another room with a closet, which means another CK battle.

Three Fatal Frames to the face and she was down. But still no key.

The second floor having been explored to exhaustion, it's time to head back downstairs.

A V.I.L.E. henchman! We must be on the right track!

This door leads to a room that was previously locked when Sae was chasing us around.

Just the one glowing orb in here.

We're not going to be anywhere near a film projector for the remainder of the chapter, so you'll just have to wait to see what indie masterpiece the villagers have produced for us this time.

Please try not to hold your breath.

Another previously inaccessible room. The mirror to Kiryu House's entrance hall, this is how non-doomed people get into Tachibana House.

This did not look like a closet to me. I thought it was a stack of crates. But examine it and...

You're starting to get on my nerves, kid.

Obligatory Fatal Frame shot. KC is nowhere near as difficult as I remember her being the first time I played this game. In fact, I have actually wondered whether I started the game on Easy Mode by accident because I'm finding many of the ghosts to be easier.

Or maybe I just suck less than I used to! Yes, I like that narrative. We'll go with that.

Another KO, still no key. But hey, since this is an entrance hall, maybe trying the front door might be a good idea? At the very least we could go find a Woman In Box or two for some variety?

Oh, dear. Cinematics never end in puppies.

It's a battle with the three villagers, and they are seriously pissed.

This is a hard fight. All three ghosts have a ludicrous amount of HP, and the room we're fighting in isn't large enough to outmaneuver them. Waiting for Fatal Frame moments is a good way to get killed, at least at first. The best way to handle this is to get more than one of them in the frame and go for Core (head) shots as often as possible. When at least one of them goes down, things get much easier.

This is not a post-battle reward; we just couldn't approach the urn to search it without triggering the cut scene and battle.

There's a little random hallway off the entrance room, which looks like it was used for storage.

At this point, the entire house has been explored. But there are still some closets on the first floor that we haven't checked for Itsuki's sister, so I guess that's our next move.

WELP NOTHING HERE I GUESS I'D BETTER GO SOMEWHERE ELSE

Yeah, this series has pulled that trick more than a couple times.

Here's a shot of KC charging around after pulling her darkness trick.

Woo, finally! I mean, of course when we get back up to the locked room Mayu will be gone, but the beating-up-children segment of this game is over and that's a good thing, right?

She kind of sounds less "scared" than "tripping balls"... or is that just me?

We also have a new memo:

Quote:
Originally Posted by Memo: Chitose Tachibana

A delicate child, she always hid in the closet whenever outsiders came to the house to visit.

When The Repentance came, she hid in the closet to get away from the darkness.

Too afraid to come out, she witnessed the entire massacre from inside.

Chitose died in that closet...
Well, that's enough exposition. It looks like I forgot to screenshot using the key to open the door, but -- shock and surprise -- Mayu wasn't there when we got there.

Mio hears footsteps!

...Of course it's Sae.

Sae walks past the window...

Mio has nowhere to go.

And Mayu comes barreling through the door into her sister's arms.

You're turning into a scary murder ghost. Please try to keep up.

You'll forgive me? I feel so much better now, thanks!
