Smiler and BEAT play Crystalis: The post-apocalyspe sure did mess with reality.

Crystalis is a zelda clone. YEAH I SAID IT WHAT ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT? Despite that, it came out on the NES, so it's only competition was the original Zelda and Spiritual Warfare, which meant that Crystalis was pretty much the only game in town. Now I really really liked this game as a kid. You got levelling up, quest chains, and cool sword lasers.

But you know what? Fuck 'em. Nowadays there's just way too much grind, the quests are all tied to weirdo event flags, and the fact that you need to plant your butt to charge your sword lasers is a total drag. This playthrough is going to highlight the things you can do to streamline your future Crystalis games. Besides, 1997 came and went and now the world's over, so who's going to tell us how to play this anymore. B)

This is why I did this LP basically.

The first defense number (Armor) protects against collision damage with enemies, the second one (Shield) protects against projectile damage.

There is a ROM Hack patch for this game called Crystalis Rebalance that removes the level check and made some changes to the spells and weapons.

Isn't that just Crystalis GBC?

GBC crystalis is also just terrible.

Some things to note about the last few episodes:

• I streamed it all
• I got lost a lot because it was a spur of the moment thing. We were all bored and I was like "Hey remember Crystalis maybe I should finish that."
• I missed a few items at the end. If I went back to Goa to talk to Akahana's friend (While magically being him because we have no sense of decorum when dealing with the dead) I would have gotten a ring that made me shoot level 1 projectiles every attack.
• I missed the psycho shield somewhere in the desert. It was the best shield stats wise and prevented paralysis and petrify, which would have helped quite a bit.
• I missed the fucking Thunder Bracelet which would have made the final section so much fucking easier. That of course is hidden somewhere in the desert.
• Azteca is Dragonia who is a FUCKING ROBOT THAT YOU MADE YEAH THAT'S RIGHT AZTECA IS LEADING THE FIGHT AGAINST HIMSELF AND YOU WERE THE ONE WHO MADE HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE GOOD JOB. Also he turns into a buff dragon man.

Seconded. I loved this game so very much back in the day.

The Game Boy Color's Lifespan was dotted with ports of NES games, transferred to the hardware at various degrees of fidelity. Thus in June 2000, almost 10 years exactly after Crystalis's original release on the NES, the game was released again in brand new portable form.

The new version came with a few changes. The glitches that Smiler was so happy to abuse are largely nowhere to be found. Continuing from a Game Over will keep your current location, but knocks your level down to whatever it was when you last saved. The art for things like the intro cutscene and game over screen is new hideous and hilarious, and there are even a few digitized voice clips here and there for some reason.

We're also knocked down from The NES standard resolution of 256 x 240 to the GBC's 160 x 144. It's actually a pretty big problem for reasons.

Also, pretty sure you don't need to charge Crystalis (I also just hold down the barrier button, very anticlimactic battle that way). Though I usually have the warrior ring for the entire tower so hard to be sure.

In which I discover the horrible game over mechanics, and visual boy advance is an unrepentant piece of shit.

The gameover stuff is baffling. You continue near where you died, but you only have the level you had when you last saved??? I haven't tested this thoroughly enough to say for sure.

Also the game itself is still okay. In fact it's easier to not play Y's with the enemies and ram right into them like an idiot while hitting them. The difficulty is balanced then by the tiny screen just spawning dudes in front of you. To give the game credit though the enemies do seem to persist farther away than your field of view.

Oh yeah and the music and sound is all horrible.

Yeah I haven't even gotten past the garbage ass music yet.

Lower quality versions of the original songs I could get, but what even....what?
