How would she do that? She doesn't learn Mirror, only Jerin learns that.

The things you be frightened of are her Sunder and Thunder spells. Thunder especially, since she's wearing the Flash Ring. Oooooooh, scary!

...Or you would be scared of that, if Sol didn't explicitly mention that Guard Daos was the final battle.

Spoilers!

I've always really loved how the game doesn't replace Lufia with a 4th party member for that section. Actually putting some gameplay weight behind it really adds to the impact of events.

Fun fact: The Sinistrals' "wave" attacks weren't actually called "Foo Wave" in the Japanese version of this game. Instead, they were Destruction Strike, Silent Chaos, and Memory of Terror.

Well, guess that clears up how they somehow got the word "Amnesia" out of Daos' Paralysis spell.

This LP has made me consider picking up the game again and finally getting through the alumina quest.

Also, no annotation to note when the party became 16.7% elf? Still not as much elf as Maxim's party, but Maxim's levels were higher so they could afford it.

I was going to do this but I forgot. It shall forever be my secret shame.

I know I beat the game once, and I certainly knew the twist, but I had completely forgotten how they implemented it. It is pretty cool, although I'm sure if it happened in a modern game I'd be annoyed.

Why? Lufia's game-play isn't relevant enough that putting it in service to the plot huts it. I know years ago I once said on this board that I liked Lufia better than FFV because it had the balls to make the loss of a party member matter. But in FFV not getting a perfect replacement for Gaulf would have absolutely hurt the gameplay. in Lufia your three member party can take down the remaining monsters and bosses and deep game play isn't really the point, so...

(First time I played Lunar I didn't know you needed to do that. I was playing the SSSC version where the Ocarina opens a Sound test, and I thought this was its only purpose. Unsurprisingly I was very angry a few seconds later.)

Wait, you didn't hit the bug where you can pass the Ocarina to someone else during the demo and then have it not on Alex when you need it, did you?

No, I had the ocarina, I just didn't know I needed to use it. Lunar didn't typically require item use as part of problem-solving, so it caught me off guard and I got myself smote for my trouble.

It was pretty hilarious.

Edit: Wow there have been like three new versions of Lunar since then. I guess the secret to success in the video game industry is to make one really good game, and then keep making it over and over again.

I think it wouldn't work in a modern game because now it's overdone--the later Lufia series ran it into the ground, even without the other games that did the same thing. But back when this came out, it was a new idea that hadn't been done before. Heck, this was still early in the period when jrpg characters had individual personalities, much less backstories and secrets.

By the later games you just mean, Lufia III? Because Lufia II doesn't do that, and as we all know there are no other games in the series after III.

No others.

Ruin what? You crazy son.

Can we get rid of Lufia III as well while we're at it?

LIII is at least unintentionally hilarious, and gave us a pretty great LP on this forum.

Any other hypothetical game that doesn't exist can't claim as much.

Oooh,now you finally revealed your true colors.

Seriously though, I'm rather curious what part of III you don't like. Sure, the game could use some more polish and there's that obvious technical downgrade from SNES to GBC, but otherwise it has most of the elements that you seem to really enjoy in Lufia I (breezy gameplay, excellent character dynamic, charmingly written dialogue...)

Lufia III gets my eternal adoration for making Spiritual Force an actual game mechanic, at the very least.

I always kind of thought IP in Lufia II represented it well. Their power rises as they get angry and can be channeled through magical weapons to give unbelievable attacks? Sounds about right.

Default Epilogue: Priphea

And so it came to be that our journey had come to an end. We had traversed four continents, found the secret forbidden elf land that no human had ever found, conquered the earth, the ocean, and even the sky, murdered an army of clowns, found a relic of ancient and forbidden power, lost it, found it again, and rose to the heavens to challenge God himself, because he was a major prick. And then God went Super-Saiyan, but we killed him anyway.

Our quest was finally fulfilled. The Sinistrals had been destroyed before they could cause any serious harm to the earth.

Prophet

All except one.

Epilogue: Priphea

I guess Medi was hoping everything would just be fine at this point, and he seems completely taken aback now that he's actually forced to confront reality.

Man, you guys are looking at the glass half-empty. Lufia is now the only remaining god in Estpolis! I'm sure a few decades under new management would do wonders for the image of the pantheon...

Yeah, I'm with Medi on this one! Who says you have to do evil!? I'm sure that through the power of the human heart, even the Goddess of Slaughter can be reformed! This is a JRPG, people!

Umm...okay, that's definitely a problem, yeah. But surely there's some other solution! Power of the human heart! Right?

...right?

Final Battle

Did it just get really cold in here?

You just always have to have it your way don't you?

Default Epilogue: Priphea

But... you're like, the sweetest most adorable JRPG heroine I've ever seen, and one of the very few who doesn't make me want to hang myself. I wouldn't kill you in a million years!

No, nothing doing, woman! You can't make me! I don't care if you are God! You're not the boss of me!

..why is my God-killing sword moving of its own volition?

Don't you do it.

DON'T YOU DO IT.

With its awesome deus ex sword powers, the Dual Blade floods the chamber with waves of reality-warping rays, and a surge of cosmic energy explodes outward, shaking the entire fortress. Aguro and Jerin are thrown from the platform.

In a blinding flash of light, Lufia disappears.

The Dual Blade, its purpose fulfilled, vanishes from the earth, to await the day its power will be needed once more.

Sorrow

Where'd Lufia go? :'(

Oh no!

Default Epilogue: Priphea

Ravaged by the Dual Blade's power, Lufia finally explains just what happened to her back at Glasdar Tower. The endless memories of her days as a Sinistral drowned out her brief, fleeting time with Medi.

The time she was the happiest.

But when Medi called out to her while Daos tried to take her power, she realized she couldn't go through with it. She couldn't bring herself to fight Medi, the only person in an eternity that she called her friend.

In the end, even though she was scared, she chose to destroy herself rather than ever let any harm come to him.

Medi is really good at this whole “denial” thing.

Don't talk like that! We still have to have that tea! And then we'll go to Lorbenia and I'll buy you that ridiculously overpriced dress you really liked.

I'll buy you a million of them.

Default Epilogue: Priphea

Parting

With the death of the final Sinistral, the Fortress of Doom shudders. The glass bridge shatters and falls apart, and Lufia plummets into the darkness below.

And Medi tries to go after her, and has to be forcibly restrained by Aguro.

I'm sure Aguro and Jerin would be more supportive if they were a little less concerned with the imminent destruction looming over them.

Medi's reaction to Lufia's death is probably one of the most heartbreaking things in the history of games. =(

~~~
Elsewhere, the world watches as Doom Island plummets from the sky...
Good to know you believed in us there, Professor.
~~~

From his vantage point atop the Tower of Grief, Flake, the Elder of Arus had a splendid view of our battle.

With the destruction of the Sinistrals, he heralds the beginning of a new era of peace and prosperity.

Though the price was great.
