I have fury! Let's play Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga!
Fresh from an LP about hamsters and heartbreaks, it's time to me to launch into the weird and wonderful world of...
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga! Another GBA title from 2003, everyone reading this thread should know who these two are already. Even if you have spent the last few decades living under a rock, exposure to the internet would have probably educated you long before you stumbled in here. In terms of gameplay, we're going to be looking at something more in line with Paper Mario or Super Mario RPG, a turn-based system where good timing goes a long way toward increasing the damage you deal and protecting you from the same. There's also plenty of teamwork involved, a fact which tempted me to reference X-Strike or another dual tech from the Chrono games for the thread title. I think I made the right choice though... You'll see why soon enough. As all you tyrants out there may have noticed, this Let's Play is going to be a little different... I've managed to snare a co-commentator to work with me for this one. Wanna introduce yourself to the nice people? // Hello! I'm just a friend of Kala's that happened to have played this game to death when I had finally gotten my hands on it. For all extents and purposes you can call me Talon13 as that'll be my username when I join here! Also I see Kala forgot to mention the "Bro Actions" which are really important, as this is really the first time (that I can think of off the top of my head) that Luigi and Mario's brotherly bond is actually a main gameplay mechanic. It can do anything from solving puzzles and doing tag team special moves, to hindering or slowing you down in battle when the last man standing has to heft up his fallen bro in an attempt to keep him from taking damage while helpless. After that all I can really say is get ready to have a lot of fun at all the weird goofiness this game will have to offer ^^ // As with last time, there will be links to music and important cutscenes, as well as boss fights. Updates will be whenever I can get my partner's commentary or all the videos uploaded, whichever occurs last. There's not much else to say for the moment, except that I hope you all enjoy the LP! |

I'm tempted to join in with a LP of Partners in Time, but I'm not sure if I could handle writing down the script.

I've actually been meaning to play this game again sometime soon, but I couldn't find my copy. It must be in the states. Anyway, I'm looking forward to following this LP! (Psst, change your avatar!)

POW! Now you're playing with power!
Looking forward to it. |

Hooray! This is going to be great.

Hm, never seen this one before...
That said, I was hooked on your last LP, so I'll be sticking around to see how this one goes. I'm ready to see you knock another one out of the park. Best of luck to both of you! |

Oh god, this series...
My opinion of it is, more or less, that it only got two million or nearly two million sales per game because it's Mario, not because the games are any good. (...Cos, honestly, they're fucking terrible.) |

Clarification: I only played a little of Partners in Time, and none of the third game. [/HK47] Quote:
I don't particularly care about the other two, but this one's a good game... Mostly pretty easy, but fun. |

Looking forwards to this because I could never get myself to finish this game. Probably because I'm a completionist and I always feel like I've missed out on some cleverly hidden secret every time I play the game. Also, stuff you can't get until you have the proper Bros. power.

Please forgive Aerdan's tactlessness. I'm afraid he's been dealing with the worst of the Romhacking.net forums for far too long, and it's left a bit of a mark on the way he expresses himself.
I, for one, am looking forward to this. |

This is a true statement. This particular game is leaps & bounds above the other two in quality, I feel—and I apologise that I didn't go out and say so earlier. I will stand by my original statement when it comes to Bowser's Inside Story, however.

I agree, this game is probably one of my favorite for the GBA. The other two, however, are only OK. Partners in Time sucked. Bowser's Inside Story was actually not that bad, though, just not even close the greatness of the first.
I am really excited for this LP! I was a closet reader of the Hamtaro one, but this one I'll be vocally invested in. Good luck, and I hope that this LP is just as great as your last. |

Man, Partners in Time was amazing. Nothing quite like one shotting every boss in the game with the incredibly broken "keep on going until you mess up" item attacks.
Though I admit those have nothing on Superstar Saga's Chopper Brothers + Shroom Badge combo. |

Bowser's Inside Story is the best one, though.

I only played Bowser's Inside Story (and loved it!), so I'm hoping this LP will help me understand why everyone loves this "I have fury" guy because I don't.

Everyone's entitled to their opinion.
(though I profoundly disagree with Aerdan's) Anyway, lookin' forward to this LP. |

The Shroom Badge series increased your attack power based on the total number of mushrooms you had in your inventory. This was obviously intended to make you judge whether staying alive was better than high attack power, but the fact that the badge also counts Super and Ultra mushrooms, and the fact that you could heal with Nuts, means there's nothing to really think about.
Anyways, if you have a bunch of mushrooms, your attack power increases by a lot. So much that one Chopper Brothers (the easiest to use multiple-hit Brother attack) one shots almost every boss in the game. |

Hmm... Hmmmm... This, I may have to look into.

Personally I like the Bonus Spring and Great Force combo. That just wrecks enemies later on if you know how to dodge moves, and makes the last dungeon a joke.

Great Force is just a formality compared to the sheer ridiculousness of the Shroom Mush Badge.
Total spoilers in that video by the way. |

Yeah, it's pretty hilarious how three consecutive posts claimed each of the three were the best one.

I said Partners in Time was amazing, not the best. Superstar Saga holds that position.

Wow, look at all this activity without a vote, or even an update! I hope this level of discussion continues... Even if half of it becomes "This is the best build" or "Hey, you forgot such-and-such!"
That spoileriffic video was pretty awesome too. I've never tried the Advance-attacks to any serious degree, but I see the appeal. |
#27
|
|||
|
|||
Really? I almost always used Advanced attacks, just because they looked more flashy. Guess that's just my thing, eh?

Even for Chopper Brothers?
what is wrong with you |

...The fact that I was set in my ways and couldn't bother figuring out when to switch up the combos I'd learnt may have had something to do with it. What can I say, I'm a horrible creature of habit.
I did find them in an FAQ since my last playthrough, so I'll be sure to try them out when we get to that stage. |

Replaying most of BIS earlier this year made me want to replay this game. But maybe this LP will suffice.
Why the BIS hate though? That game is awesome. A little too minigamey, yes, but great nonetheless. |
