More Obscure THAN the Spectrum: Let's Play PC-8801
Welcome to my first ever LP, where in you may marvel at my random stumbling through the catalog of Japan's favorite retro computer the PC-8801. I've been more preoccupied by life then usual lately, so it might be a few days before I can get anything proper up, so in the meantime, here are some random screens that I would otherwise have no place for.
Some weird Back to the Future text adventure. Sadly, this is as far as I could make it. Final Funtasy indeed... A disturbingly common theme on the PC-8801. Exactly as exciting as it sounds. An early game by Nihon Telenet, interestingly enough. Last edited by Mr.Slump; 02-02-2011 at 08:32 AM. |

I don't know what that guy thinks he's going to accomplish with those dainty hands.

Are you going to be playing the PC-88 versions of Ys?

Probably, but I warn you, there's nothing to terribly exciting about it.

And that's about all the history for the PC-8801 you'll ever need. Speaking or rape, why don't we take a look at one of the PC-8801's most infamous games, 177, which might just the first ever rape simulator. I promise this will (probably) be the only rape game I'll post about. Those are some hot scanlines! Ah, Macadamia, the most delicious of all PC-8801 publishers. In case your wondering, 177 is the Japanese police code for rape. For a rape simulator, this thing plays an awful lot like a sub-Mario platformer. Basically you just chase the girl around the map, avoiding rocks, cats, birds, and various other enemies of rape, graping arrows to take a different path on the map. You can also throw bombs, but I honestly have no idea what they do. If you don't catch her in time, the girl gets back home and does a happy little dance, which is actually the most entertaining thing about the game. I'm really not sure how to catch her actually, I did once on accident, and then I somehow lost at the rape minigame. All in all, the game is an extremely primitive platformer, with a rape theme to just to the terribleness of it all. Next up will be either Super Mario Special by Hudson or Lolita Syndrome by Enix, I'll let you decide. |

I found a higher-res version of this, but you really don't want to know. |

The fact that they aped Osamu Tezuka's style for that makes it extra vomit-worthy.

I vote for the one with fewer instances of underage rape.
And I hope with every fibre of my being that one is Super Mario Special. |

The "then" in this title is going to bug me every single time I view this subforum.
The scanlines give these games a distinctive look. |

I've always wondered, with screenshots like those, how those systems did their graphics. Why are there so many black lines?

The PC-88's basically the birthplace of a number of PC genres in Japan, including the eroge. I know that a number of the upgraded Win9x ports of some of them got brought over by the people who would eventually become the Peach Princess company.
Well, scratch that, I'm not sure if it's the same people, but they were brought over. |

Can I request the horror that is ラプラスの魔 (see also: Laplace no Ma and/or Diable de Laplace)? All versions of it are pretty much awful, but the original PC88 version has got to be a special brand of suckage.

Didn't know that Enix started out as a hit-or-miss Japanese home computer game developer, eh? Not that many people do; Enix before Dragon Quest was pretty obscure. The worst part is, Lolita Syndrome wasn't the only, ah, "questionable" game they published back then...

Okay, let's leave the ugliness of 177 behind us, and look at that's bizarre and terrible in entirely different ways. I speak of course of Super Mario Bros. Special, Hudson Softs 100% official PC port of Super Mario Bros.
I say port, but it's an almost completely different game. Instead of scrolling smoothly the game is made up of a series of single screens. This, compounded with the fact that there is no run button, makes playing the game an exercise in masochism. The whole game really seems like Mario done as a pre-Mario platformer. There's more yellow in this game then Persona 4. Mario is using his Octocamo. After the first jarring screen transition, I'm met with perhaps the most terrifying creatures I have ever seen in a video game. Seriously, what the hell is the deal with those turtles. After kicking one of the shells, I was surprised to find it once off the edge of the screen, rendering me once more into small Mario. After dying a few times, I eventually reached this completely nonthreatening screen. At least it would be in normal Super Mario Bros., but this game is Special, and requires absolute precision, which I obviously lack, and thus: Well, I can either keep plugging away at this monstrosity, or move on to something a bit more...interesting. So what should it be, More Super Mario Special, or is it time we finally see what this Lolita Syndrome thing is? |

I'll definitely look into this, though it might be a bit to Japanese intensive for me.

I would like to see something of Super Mario Special beyond 1-1, if it's all the same.

More Super Mario Bros. Special would be nice. I think it's made on the same engine as the past 2 PC-8801 Mario games, which were supposed to be really good. Maybe you could give those a chance if you're tired of dying at Super Mario Bros?

I keep reading the title screen as "Super Special Mario Bros."
And it proved Super Special indeed. |
