Default Guys Can't Resist a Little Leg: Let's Play Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure!

Someday

Welcome to the world of Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure.

In short: Rhapsody was released in North America in 2000 by Atlus USA, sold tens of copies, and became a punchline to critics, as well as legions of jaded gamers who are incapable of feeling joy. It was also the JRPG debut of Nippon Ichi Software (NIS), better known nowadays for the Disgaea series, which share a similar goofy and genre-twisting spirit.

As a freshman effort, it's far from perfect, but beneath the rough exterior, Rhapsody is a cute little game, filled with bright colours, silly characters, cheesy songs, and true love, so I have made it my mission to share it with you.

Disclaimer: If you (still) love Disney musicals for the sights, the sounds, the absurdities, and the spectacle, despite the baggage they often carry to adult eyes, you'll love this game. On the other hand, if you're looking for a game that brings GRRL POWER to gaming, and is a postmodern, feministic triumph in role-reversal in which a girl becomes a fully-realized woman, you'll find it problematic. Rhapsody is what it is, and what it is, is basically a take on Disney musicals, through the lens of a JRPG.

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

So, without further ado...

Characters - In Order of Appearance
(Bios courtesy of the Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure instruction booklet.)

Cornet Espoire
Age: 16
Height: 5'
Weight: 100 lbs.
Occupation: Puppeteer

Favourite Food: Fruits
Dislikes: Toads

Kururu
Age: ?
Height: 1 ft
Weight: ?

Favourite Food: Cherries
Dislikes: Anything sour.

Myao
Age: ?

Dislikes: Green peppers, onions, and carrots.

Ferdinand Marl E.
Age: 17
Height: 5'6”

Crowdia
Age: ?
Height: 5'7"

Likes: Anything that's beautiful, Caesar salad, and Marjoly.
Dislikes: Anything greasy.

Marjoly
Age: 20 (or so she says...)
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 110 lbs.
Occupation: Witch.
Personality: The most beautiful witch in the world (self proclaimed.) A very sexy witch with powerful magic. Due to her clumsiness, she isn't your typical psychotic megalomaniac bent on ruling the world.
Hobby: Looking in the mirror and taking care of her skin, laughing loud.
Likes: Pretty boys.
Dislikes: Ugly men.

Default Prologue - Into the Woods

We start off in the thick of the action, with our heroine being chased by something large and scary that wants to make her its dinner.

Fortunately, just before the monster can eat her...

A handsome young man swoops in to save the day, and light returns to the scene!

Well, it looks like we're just moments away from our happy ending. You know, the one where the handsome prince saves the beautiful girl, he kisses the girl, and they live happily ever after? I'm kind of disappointed that the game wasn't a bit longer, but what can you do?

But before they can kiss and seal the deal...

Oh. It was all a dream. Sorry guys, false alarm. It looks like Cornet's still getting lucky though!

Or maybe not.

Meet Kururu, Cornet's best friend, confidant, and enabler. Where would a musical (or a JRPG) be without one of these?

(Not seen: Cornet getting whacked so hard she flies right out of bed and ricochets around the room.)

Continuity Error! Cornet's face portrait is wearing outdoor clothes, but the sprite is still wearing pajamas.

It looks like Kururu is used to this kind of thing.

At least we won't have to sit through that song again.

As Cornet grumbles to herself about being interrupted during yet another overly-specific Prince rescue fantasy, Kururu opens the curtains to reveal...

A fancy title screen! (Note the conspicuously giant tree in the background of the palace, known to the people of the kingdom as the Great Not Appearing Anywhere Else in This Game Tree.)

After all that, Cornet finally gets around to going downstairs to see what her grandfather wants. Let's hope it wasn't anything urgent.

Downstairs, Grandpa Mustaki is staring bemusedly at a puppet with a large cannon, apparently waiting for Cornet to come take it away, or something.

That had to have been Cornet's imagination, right?

Wow. Snippy.

(In the interests of keeping this LP as classy and family-friendly as possible under the circumstances, I will not be providing a definition from a certain slang-centric internet dictionary of dubious repute to highlight what is wrong with the name “Sharte,” especially if you were to say, take the 'e' off the end. No, there's no need to thank me.)

Missing sister or not, can't she see that the wacky sidekick position has already been filled? By a puppet without a disgusting name?

It looks like thou must, Cornet.

(Interestingly enough, not every choice in Rhapsody is like this, as we'll eventually see.)

Cornet then starts to play her horn, which causes the horn's magic to animate Sharte, and allow her to join the “party.” This apparently also shrinks her enough to fit into the magical space where JRPG protagonists are always shoving their spare party members.

(In a neat little bit of musical flavour, Cornet can actually be heard playing the horn every time she uses it in a cutscene. Specifically, she plays the chorus notes of “Let's Go On,” aka. the 'reprise' song of the game.)

Grandpa doesn't seem to bat an eye at this spectacle though. In fact, he's still got chores for Cornet and Kururu to do for him.

Cornet, sensing another round of “But Thou Must” in store for her if she doesn't agree, says yes.

Grandpa then thanks Cornet, and nags her to EQUIP items and TALK to the VILLAGERS before heading out to the WOODS to get R.INOT for the FIR.

Jokes aside, that actually sounds like pretty good advice. One never knows who one might run into in the Woods. Let's see what she's got:

Hmnm, some candy to restore health, some cocoa to restore sanity, and a couple pieces of jewelry. Let's slap that on!

... It's only slightly offensive.

(Sharte doesn't get anything to wear just yet. As we'll soon see, she hardly needs it.)

On Grandpa's coffee table, we see a little generic puppet, who has something interesting to share.

It looks like it's not every day that puppets get up and walk around, let alone talk to people. But Cornet has certain responsibilities as a JRPG protagonist. Responsibilities to be Mysteriously Powerful, that is.

Cornet notices a letter half-hanging out of the mailbox. Maybe Grandpa forgot to bring it in, what with all the excitement over Sharte.

Wow. Not only did Grandpa not even bother to bring in poor Polin's letter, he immediately regifted her (apparent) token of love to his granddaughter. That's pretty cold.

Ah, the classics.

Cornet takes a moment to talk to little Alfred, who's looking for his lost puppy, Koro. Only to be a good and caring neighbour, because this will never be important, ever.

Then she and Kururu decide to follow Grandpa's advice and go for a stroll through town before they leave. It's not as if they're in a big hurry, and it's a nice day to go expositing visiting, anyhow.

Cornet, just like every other JPRG main character ever, is also an orphan. She's only reminded of this fact twenty times a day by various NPCs. Further bulletins as events warrant.

Speaking of bulletins, on the town bulletin board, Cornet sees something of interest.

The Miss Marl's [Kingdom] Contest? Now there's a random bit of flavour text that will probably never be important.

Also of note on the bulletin board is the Melody Square, of which there is one in (almost) every town in the game.

Not bad.

(Playing the horn at Melody Square will usually bring everyone in town running over to listen, and to give Cornet a very small tip. I say “usually” because there is exactly one circumstance in which the Melody Square will do nothing...)

One house in town introduces us to a tragic tale of star-crossed lovers...

It's enough to break your heart.

At the north end of town is a lush orange orchard, in the middle of which is a church and a small cemetery.

It looks like Cornet's found Koro. For some reason, she can't be bothered to take him back to Alfred, but it looks like he's okay here for now.

(Goddess Statues are the Inns of Rhapsody, restoring health and magic to Cornet and her puppets for free whenever she talks to one. The only thing they can't do is fix broken puppets, but that service is provided elsewhere, for a price.)

Finally, Cornet stops in at the elegantly named COMMONER'S SHOP, to grab some supplies for the trip.

That's a pretty wild story. Besides, Cornet and Kururu go to the woods all the time, and they've never seen anyone like that before.

(The guy on the left is a Monster Master, who stores any monsters Cornet catches in the wild. He has a much more useful counterpart elsewhere, so we'll be ignoring him for the rest of the game, for reasons that I'll explain once we get our hands on a monster or two.)

The Commoner's Shop itself doesn't have a whole lot that Cornet actually needs right now, but she does end up buying something that no adventurer in Marl Kingdom should ever leave home without, just in case.

Finally, Cornet and Kururu strike out for the Wonder Woods...

Located in verdant Greeneast, the Wonder Woods!

(The names of the various map locations constantly wiggle around in a “fanciful” manner when you highlight a place. Cute, but terribly inconvenient for making screenshots.)

Once inside the woods (and past an NPC who's very eager to tell Cornet all about the CIRCLE button), we see that it's a beautiful day in Wonder Woods.

Then Cornet stops and gets a dreamy look on her face, and floaty hearts appear in the air above her head, visible as such only to those who can make out sketchy spritework also understand pure love. Kururu knows what's up, and she calls her out.

Seeing Cornet looking so love-struck seems to strike a chord with Kururu, and she starts doing a little reminiscing of her own.

Cornet, understandably not wanting to hear Kururu's anecdotes about all the wild puppet-on-person action that was all the rage back in the day, starts to cut her off, but gets interrupted by an ominous croaking from the bushes.

It's time for our first battle!

The battle system in Rhapsody is an odd duck. It looks like a Breath of Fire-style isometric battle view, but in practice it plays out more like an SRPG. Later games in the series drop this system entirely and go back to a more old-school Final Fantasy-style battle system. To be fair, you can't fault NIS for trying something new... In theory. In practice, this system leaves a lot to be desired, especially in regards to how long it takes for even the lowest-level encounters to wrap up.

(Notice that only Sharte is helping in the fight: Kururu's role in battle is to basically act like a tiny, anime Vanna White, zipping up and down the screen to “help” input battle commands.)

For example, Cornet and her puppets must Move across the screen until they are next to an attacking monster...

But it looks like Cornet can't get close enough to attack on this turn. Since Cornet can't (yet) perform any long-distance attacks, she'll have to End her turn for now.

Next, Sharte's up, and since she can reach the Toad on the right, let's have her Attack. She hits it pretty hard, but she can't quite kill it off, and it goes to torment Cornet. It looks like she's going to have to bring out the big guns, or face having to actually touch one of the icky things... Let's select one of Cornet's two unique battle commands, Horn.

Horn increases the power of all puppets in range, and adds a note to the chart on the top right of the screen. When the chart fills up, it resets, and the number to the right goes up by one, unlocking a new Reward for Cornet to use in battle. More on that later.

Now Sharte can make short work of the Toad, no problem. Cornet will have to recharge Sharte during her next turn though, unless she wants to finish the other one off herself.

They won! Not shown: Cornet and Sharte gaining a level each, and Sharte getting her first spell, Heal.

After the battle, Cornet is still freaking about how horrible toads are. Kururu steps in to remind her that she could have just run away, if they bothered her so much. Even if it wouldn't have made a very good first impression as the Heroine of the story, she does have a point...

Cornet Espoire: Comeback Queen.

(Cornet's general ineptitude at life will be one of many recurring jokes in the game, as will her toad phobia.)

Whether out of contrariness, or sheer practicality, Cornet won't stand for that. After all, they just got to the Woods, and they haven't found a scrap of Inotium yet.

Then her stomach starts to growl. This does not go unnoticed by Kururu.

Cornet agrees, and the scene fades to black... Then fades back in to Cornet and Kururu, who have just finished lunch. Not yet satisfied, Kururu asks Cornet for another favour.

Cornet decides that she's still mad about that whole thing from before, where she was called “stupid”...

(Refusing to sing for Kururu is our first actual choice of the game, though this one ultimately does nothing except make Kururu mad, and make me feel kind of mean. Let's rewind...)

Well, why not?

The music starts, Cornet takes a dramatic pose, and we have our first (mid-game) musical number, “Let's Go On.”

And it feels so good to hear.
Sounds a little sad, but sweet just the same.
Lovely melody.
Whenever I hear this song, I really don't know why
It makes me shed a little tear
But I know my tears will soon disappear
Because I know you're here
Whenever I am feeling sad
And everything around looks bad
All I have to do is think of you
I know my dreams are waiting to come true
Let's go on with hope in our hearts
Love will surely show us how
Let's go on, our hearts filled with dreams
Let's go on and find them now.

Let's Go On – Cornet's Solo Version

The song stirs up some old memories, as songs tend to do, and Cornet asks Kururu about her parents.

But Kururu soon changes the subject back to the business at hand.

In the very next screen, the duo come to the first fork in the road.

Thinking that a cave might be a good place to look for Inotium, they opt to go South, to the Cave in the Woods.

Aw, it's a bunny! Undisturbed by the fact that it's asleep, and floating in the air, Cornet goes to say hi. But just as she touches it, it disappears in a flash of light.

Maybe he'll be in a better mood, at a mysterious point in the future...

Soon, Cornet comes to the Cave in the Woods.

(Now, I know that this LP has been low on audience participation so far... That's why I'm going to do you all a big favour.)

(Just like that, I've shown you every Cave Dungeon in the entire game. Just print these pictures out, and colour them red when we get to the Fire Dungeon, blue when we get to the Ice Dungeon, etc. while listening to the soundtrack to your favourite Off-Disney Musical, and you'll be able to play along at home, whether you own your very own copy of Rhapsody or not! Let it never be said that I've never given you anything.)

Yes, one of the ways in which Rhapsody was horribly dated since way before the date it came out was in the dungeon design. Cave Dungeon and Brick Dungeon repeat themselves incessantly, and never with any more landmarks or outstanding details than the ones seen here. As a result, getting lost is a very real possibility for first-timers, and an almost certainty in a dungeon we'll be visiting later. That's why I bought a Teleporter before we left town, so I'd be assured of having at least one in case of emergencies.

For this reason, I won't be showing much of any given dungeon from now on, unless there's something of interest within.)

Cornet and Kururu search the Cave in the Woods thoroughly, and don't find a scrap of Red Inotium, but they do find:

Let's take a look!

Ha ha! It's Cornet in a clown outfit! How wild!

(There are Illustrations for every important character in the game, and while they show up a lot in chests, you don't have to collect every one of them if you don't want to. The Gallery in the startup screen updates independently of your collection, and you get no other type of bonus for having them all, except for the satisfaction of having found them all. Since the Gallery already has spoilers in it, I won't be showing it off until later.)

Generic Inotium doesn't burn very well, no matter how much one has, so Cornet's going to have to look elsewhere.

Hmm, there's that Witch again. Cornet decides to go down to Natalie River, for now.

On her way there, she runs into some more Toads...

... But this time, she has enough musical power to use her other unique command, Reward. (Note the number next to the musical chart.)

Just like that, Toad guts everywhere.

(As the above menu says, there are several Rewards that Cornet can use: SugarCandy is the Level 1 reward, but the more Reward power she collects, she gets access to more and better Rewards. I'll be showing each of them off throughout the game, as events and dramatic license warrant.)

... Well, that doesn't look very friendly. Cornet decides to just move on.

Why is it called the Natalie River, anyway?

In a clearing at the end of the woods, Cornet digs through the dirt in search of the Red Inotium, while Kururu looks in the bushes and trees. After a few seconds, Kururu calls Cornet over.

Before Cornet can respond, they're interrupted by an... interesting set of characters.

Meet Myao and her enchanted cat servants. They're very anime.

While she monologues her monologue of mischief, her little cats dance around and repeat back everything she says. After a while, even she gets fed up with it, and starts scolding them, seemingly forgetting about the robbery she's in the middle of committing. To say that they don't make very intimidating figures would be an understatement.

Cornet and Kururu decide to leave “before their stupidity rubs off on [them],” but that turns out to be the wrong move...

Cornet's comeback doesn't exactly help matters either.

Myao demands their Inotium again, but Cornet and Kururu continue to play dumb. After a few moments, the cats pipe up again, this time with a sinister suggestion...

An evil smile spreads over Myao's face...

The cat in front walks forward a few paces, but faced with the intimidating spectacle of an unarmed teenage girl and her fairy puppet, loses its nerve. Myao's tender and understanding response?

(The cats (or as the game calls them, Nyankos) aren't too tough, thanks to Sharte's Saint spell. Their only attacks are (adorably) throwing bombs and landing flat on their faces, and (adorably) pouncing. It's worth noting that even though we haven't exactly been grinding out levels or anything, most of their attacks whiff, and it only takes a couple of rounds to beat them. Rhapsody's battles aren't very well balanced in general, but nowhere is this more apparent than in boss battles.)

After the battle, the Nyankos run back to Myao, crying. She doesn't feel very sorry for them at all. Instead...

Myao starts chanting, and her wand starts giving off an eerie glow...

(Rhapsody was one of Atlus' more “Working Designs-esque” translations, in case it wasn't already apparent.)

Well, at least Cornet got to meet one of the men of her dreams today.

(Mr. Scary Dragon here bobs his head up and down throughout the scene, making it hard to get a clean shot.)

Myao once again demands all of Cornet's Inotium, but Cornet won't have any of it.

Kururu errs on the side of caution, and rushes to hand Myao their hard-earned Inotium, which pleases her considerably. Cornet, however, is not so thrilled with this turn of events.

Ignoring Kururu's perfectly legitimate (and 100% accurate) point, Cornet comes right back at her with the sage advice given to her by her “Inspirational Quote a Day” Calendar.

How very Maya Angelou. Still, Kururu fails to be touched by the sensitivity of Cornet's spirit.

Kururu rambles on about how Cornet might be able to make her dreams come true someday, if she defeats the dragon that will probably down her in two bites, caring little for the fourth wall she left crumbled in her wake.

Then Myao reminds them that she's the one with the hungry dragon, and she still wants that Inotium. She finally sics the dragon on Cornet, but just as she's preparing to be turned into dragon chow...

After several moments of stunned silence, Myao demands to know who this strange intruder is.

Oooh... This guy's probably got an “Intimidating Quote a Day” Calendar.

Just as the Nyankos start to freak out and cry, Myao recognizes the crest on the boy's sword as being the crest of the Royal Family. She makes a hasty retreat, but not before getting in an ominous parting shot.

For now, satisfied with having sent the witch that was terrorizing the Wonder Woods packing, Cornet's rescuer takes a moment to make sure that she's okay.

Unfortunately, all she can do is gibber uselessly, rendered practically mute due to the shock of her ordeal (or perhaps the styling skirt that Ferdinand is rocking.) Luckily, he doesn't seem to take offense, supposing that she's just too frightened to speak.

Suddenly, voices call from offscreen, shouting for “Prince Ferdinand,” who apparently wasn't as far ahead of the royal guardsmen as he thought he was. Amazed that they actually found out that he was missing from the castle already, he prepares his escape.

Cornet and Kururu are left standing alone in the clearing. Realizing that it's been several moments since she's run her mouth, Kururu starts barfing out exposition like there's no tomorrow.

... And we fade to black, before she can get back onto the topic of her wild and callow youth.

Next Time: Cornet and Kururu figure out the best way to a man's heart. Sort of.

Extras:

Wonder woods concept art. Note that Ferdinand is wearing pants here, and Cornet... is not.

There is precisely one fight in the entire game that is actually difficult. And it's only because it has a weird game mechanic, and not because it's a tough fight.

Rhapsody is one of my favourite RPGs, even if it really is kind of awful. I'm pretty sad that NISA bungled the DS localization.

That's the oddest intro to a game I've ever seen. I can deal with Katamari's hallucinogenic mushrooms, but... a musical!?

I get the feeling that this is one of those "hidden treasure" type of game, if only for the presentation and concept. I don't think I've ever seen a video game musical, let alone one that gleefully whacks at the fourth wall like that.

Her name is really Sharte? Oh man.

Do you have some kind of graphic filter on this? The pixel work seems a little smearier than I remember from the 30 minutes I spent with the game.

The DS version is "better" "balanced" (it's still busted in the player's favour, but it's closer), and is an actual RPG instead of an SRPG. The actual localization is... competent. It's not Atlus or XSEED, but it's ok.

The big thing that burns me, though, is that not only did NISA remove the English music from the game (claiming... I don't know. Memory or something.), but they also didn't add in the extra scenerio from one of the Japanese remakes that they promised to include in compensation.

I only played this game on the DS.

Not really the best first impression to make, that.

Both of the extra scenarios were present in the Japanese DS version. They were removed without warning for the US version, even though they had previous listed them as features on their official website. Even NISA employees were confused and believed they were supposed to be in the game.

But hey, the DS version maps the dungeons for you, so there's that.

The DS version is terrible.

The translation is okay, because NISA basically dumped Atlus' translation into a DS ROM, but everything else about it is terrible.

Buggy transitions, game freezes, inexplicably-cut content, battle mechanics that don't work the way they should, awkwardly shoehorned-in DS minigames, generally lifeless new art, and no language choice option.

There were a few good additions that the PS1 game sorely needed (like dungeon maps), but I can't honestly recommend it at all.

Edit: Umbaglo and Turnip had it covered.

Also; at one point late in the game, you enter an unwinnable boss fight that doesn't end until you lose.

And it is against a recurring foe.

And the enemies stats haven't changed since you first fought them near the beginning of the game.

That one boss fight took me LONGER to finish then any other part of the game.

I think it's an emulator issue. I've been fussing with the settings so that future updates look a bit better, with mixed results.

... And I discovered that 2D PS1 games really, really don't look so good on an HDTV, so capturing from the console is right out.

You know, I haven't finished the DS version yet. I wonder if the only hard fight in the PSX version was made not so annoying in the DS one.

The boss where you need to kill it at the same time as Etoile. Except you have to guess at what exact turn that actually means, because there's no way to know.

Guys, I've been meaning to ask. Is NISA a supervillain?

They're not quite that evil. Incompetent, yes, but not really evil.

Awesome. I played the original version of this when a friend loaned it to me back in the day. Good cheesy fun all around.

Also, nice extra pics!

It's like she saw the Female Geomancer's outfit from FFT, and decided it was a great idea!
