I blame myself, not God: help me learn to like the Final Fantasy Tactics series

I remember the story of FFTA2 being kinda lame, but it had some really cool side-stories.

The auction minigame was a lot of fun. I think at the end, you can pretty much break it, but it's fun until that happens.

Final fantasy tactics is in my top five games of all time. I'm so jealous that you get to experience it fresh!
Part of the genesis of this thread is I couldn't sleep a week or two ago and was listening to old episodes of Retronauts, and your effusive praise for it reminded me I really need to give it another shot. My mother in law is here right now and I'm annoyed I can't go upstairs and play it right now, so that's a good sign lol

Once I unlocked the auctions for each region I spent the next several hours engrossed in it until I had pretty much beaten them all. by that point I had completely forgotten everything about the rest of the game and never returned to it

Got some time to play, thankfully caught up to where I'd been before, this time without any weird glitches. Almost beat the slums level without anyone getting knocked out, then the two enemy mages got instacast spells twice in a row, which is frustrating because *my* Black Mage doesn't very often lol. Oh well, still having fun. Looking forward to new content tomorrow! Lol

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if you press right on the dpad when the cursor is next to a spell in the command menu, it will show you when in the turn order it will go off.

A mage getting an "instacast" typically happens when everyone has recently exhausted their turns so everyone has a relatively low CT -- units get their turn when their CT reaches 100, then afterward it's reset by a fixed amount depending on whether they used their action and/or movement that turn. CT then counts up, with each internal "clock tick" increasing that unit's CT by the unit's speed stat. Many spells only take 4-5 clock ticks to charge, which is significantly faster than unit speed. For this reason, you're often actually a little better off having mages that are slightly slower than the enemy, because it makes it easier to land spells before enemies can move again.

Ooh, did not know about being able to see turn order under any circumstances. That'd be nice, actually, in general, not just when casting spells...

You can access the Active Turn list in general, too, but I don’t remember where exactly it is off the top of my head. I think it’s in the menu you can access when you have your cursor in an empty tile?

In either case, yeah, it’s a very useful tool. To quote Ramza: "Always check the active turn, it's a shortcut to victory!"

Alright, should I bother better equipping my guest characters? One of them just left (good riddance, prick), and I get the impression from the intro the other will soonish/eventually, too. Really wish I could control them, at the very least. Stop running directly at the enemy, dammit!

That depends on if you want to use spoilers to know when a guest character leaves. If you don't then I would say don't leave them completely gearless or you'll be making things way harder on your self but you don't have to give them your best stuff (for a variety of reasons). Also, there are some guests who are severely hampered if you try to use them without any gear.

good riddance, prick
I see that your opinion of Algus is the same as that of most other good and decent people.
you're right on about that Richie Rich-looking asshole.

IMO one trick for Chapter 1 is to really lean into the Guest characters. So, giving them equipment, keeping them alive if you can, etc. Money isn't a huge deal, really, so replacing the gear is a non-issue.

@Torzelbaum nah, no need for spoilers. If money isn't really a concern (and it doesn't seem to be, random battles are quite lucrative), I'll give Delita some decent equipment and mess around with his abilities a bit.

Anyway, Wiegraf is impossible lmao (I know he's not, I just got my ass handed to me). I took out all of his team without taking much damage at all, then he proceeded to counter and ability me into oblivion, and sometimes he blocked my attacks, too. I didn't bring my black mage with me this time (I was kinda scouting the battle out), which probably is the main reason I lost, though I was able to use my Time Mage to block Wiegraf from doing anything for a few turns, but I ran out of MP. I may have to change my Monk to a Knight or something, just to have more HP and/or defense, because Wiegraf's dumb sword spell or whatever that is seems to consistently do ~54 damage. I had two characters with Cura in that battle and couldn't keep up!

I really wish I could bring more characters to story fights, though. I don't think I'm shorthanded at all here like in some battles, but I'd like to replace Delita with someone I can control, at least. A mage would be much better than him running around, literally getting in my way.

Oh, you don't have to kill him, just get him to critical health. That's good, because I was just barely able to do that without losing any units lol. Whew!

Saw you ask about height further upthread, but Dorter Slums is the fight that is built to teach you how height advantages and disadvantages work so hopefully getting through that helped. Also, shading usually shows you where the height gradients are in a map.

And yeah, enemy mages getting unfair advantages happens, but that's a staple of Final Fantasy games in general, if not the JRPG genre as a whole.

To make things more confusing, some attacks have a different height tolerance depending on whether they're attacking up or down :)

Regulus

Sir Knightbot
I don't really remember the specifics, but I want to say in general a unit can attack downward more easily than upward. Like a 1 unit difference between though two or something. FFT can get a little weird about height, though, since tiles aren't uniformly level like most similar grid based tactical RPGs.

And one key thing to know about Archers and height is that crossbows can shoot up way more easily than regular bows.

Alright, I made it to chapter 2. I had no idea you could recruit monsters - I got a Goblin with my Orator in a random battle, and between chapters a monster egg appeared in my party. This is not a bad thing, right? lol

Reaaaaaaaally wish I could opt out of guest characters, or at least control them. Hopefully the new ones (who at least seem much more competent than the last two) leave soon.

Orator? Oh, you mean a Mediator.

Eggs are good. They're full of surprises (but really just a monster in the same "family"). Over time you can get a lot of monsters from eggs but they do fill up your roster so don't be afraid to dismiss them.

Speaking of the ator - One thing I've always enjoyed doing is recruiting human units from random battles, taking all of their gear and then dismissing them. I ain't got time to bring them up to snuff but I'll gladly take their better stuff.

When you guys play FFT, do you bother leveling up Cloud or is it not worth it
I've done it in a couple of playthroughs but sometimes I won't even bother recruiting him.

His unique skills are OK but there are far better ones. He still works just fine if you treat him like any other generic unit. Leveling him up is somewhat tedious if you don't use the FF2 method.

He needs Quick Charge to be any kind of useful with his higher-tier abilities. Otherwise they take so long to go off it doesn't matter.

I completely forgot that he is in this game. Even without playing it, having him in there sounds very gimmicky, similar to having Dante in SMT Nocturne. Doesn't really fit, and is very obviously just there because he is so popular.

I guess people who are more into the gameplay might get more out of him, even if he isn't good. But with my focus being very much the story, it sounds really weird.

Says the guy who has only played through chapter 1.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they justify Cloud of all people being in the game lol

And yeah, afaik the translation I'm using is from the PSP version, so you PS1 oldheads are gonna have to bear with me haha

I will say I'm glad I went with this version, though. I'm really enjoying the story so far. I'm pumped Delita got the killing blow on Argath, coincidentally, at least.

Cloud is not really "worth it", because you can break the game with less effort by that point, but he can be fun. He actually has pretty good stats in the NA PSX release (he was buffed in that version) and his Limit Skill has some decent options in it, though he really wants Short Charge/Swiftness to cut their charge times. Finish Touch, in particular, probably justifies his existence alone.

It's kind of tragic that War of the Lions wasn't based on the NA version of the game, because IMO most of the rebalancing in that version was for the better.

War of the Lions adds Balthier, who I think ended up being half-decent but still suffers from showing up way too late.

JP gaining question - when you gain JP after taking an action, does the JP you gain apply to the job you're currently equipped with, or the job that provides the action? In other words, if Ramza is a Knight but throws a stone (a Squire ability), does he gain Knight JP or Squire JP?

Also, I'm assuming the regular Attack command always applies JP to the currently equipped job, even if I'm using a weapon that job normally can't use, correct?
