Default it was lost but now is found

Shioda: I vividly remember a comment next to this part back when I read the scenario saying ĎThis might not be in the spirit of Megatení.

I posted some generic mumbly noises here

mumble mumble

Doi is a good designer who needs better people picking from his potential designs, or something

To run with my favorite interview quote above, I wanted to give people a way to fully express what they feel isn't "in the spirit of Megaten." So here's a PNG of that quote's original Japanese, 「メガテンシリーズらしくないかも」:

"Megaten series rashikunai kamo."

To get the ball rolling, I started with a spoiler:

But that's no fun. Here's some more:

Let's be expressive! What do you think is メガテンシリーズらしくないかも?

I liked Inanna's concept and final designs and wished that both could've been incorporated into the story. Find it hilarious that they used Inanna as a mother goddess to rationalize Toki's feelings. "It's not in the spirit of Megaten, but Toki was possess by a benign mother goddesses, that's why she say those things!"

Miroku is another demon who's concept and final design I both like. Unlike Inanna though, poor Miroku is usually seen as Matsuko Deluxe by Japanese players.

Still wished Barong and Rangda were the leaders of the Divine powers.

Just realized I do not have a lot of time to finish my third path of IV before this comes out. Gotta get on it to get silly save transfer bonuses!

"The tears under his eye stand out by showing a certain number of people, but are also proof that he is a demon."

"Yamai: From the perspective of Shin Megami Tensei, the Stephen of Shin Megami Tensei IV is one of the possibilities, but we can say it was possible for him to have met the Great Reason. Of course, from the perspective of Shin Megami Tensei IVís Stephen, I think we can say Shin Megami Tensei is also a possibility."

what do these even mean

also what does the trimurti have to do with vishnu by himself

The second quote sounds to me like a generic debunking of the notion of any one game's universe being "the prime universe".

Nerd shit.

I like to be a little more optimistic and say that the future of SMT is uncertain. The otaku bubble and the whole moe genre can't last forever, it's gotta crash sometime.

Maids have been a thing since the early 2000s.

Moe has been a thing since Card Captor Sakura.

Megaten has always been, and will always be, anime

(don't play Megaten)

Or hope for more Nintendo x Atlus crossovers. Personally I'm rooting for Devil Savvy: Style Survivor

At some point, Japan is going to get sick of moe and want something else. Just battle epic shonen, moe's going to go extinct. Something Eirikr said on his tumblr had me thinking: could the decline of Megaten have more to do with the lack of Science fiction and cyberpunk in media?

To be entirely fair, what was once "cyberpunk" is becoming increasingly "real life".

Huh. Yeah. Megaten did spring out of a sort of...early fascination with computers and conviction that they could do anything, like a lot of sci-fi works from the 90s I've read. As computers become commonplace, they lose that mystique that drives the cyberpunk setting.

The internet used to be magic, but now you have to put literal magic into the internet to justify it behaving in ways we all know by now it doesn't.

hey so does shin megami tensei iv apocalypse use playcoins in anyway. i realized i have A Bunch because of how much walking i did while listening to theatrhythm final fantasy's music box and i wasn't sure if i have anything to use them for.

(alternately: does dragon quest 7 use them?)

I actually don't remember ever using play coins. I think Dagda just revives you straight up. They probably decided it didn't make in-universe sense for him to charge you for services he's already shown to have rendered for his own benefit.

To answer your alt question: Don't think so. I don't recall anything that used play coins in DQ7, at least, but it could have been a feature I skipped entirely (though doubtful, given all the time I sank into it).

Wait, if he'd just revive you without charging Macca or PCs, what's the penalty for a Game Over? Is there one?

I booted up the game to confirm: No penalty. I died three times in a row, and the only choices you get are for to Dagda to revive you at no cost, or to accept death and game over.

And trying to die was difficult at this point, mainly because Hallelujah has an Endure skill he can cast EVERY turn. And just walking into enemies I was made aware of tweaks to subsystems as it took three oafish collisions before the enemy started with the first turn. The odds were never that good in 4.

This game comes out in a few weeks, but I can't stop thinking about this idea from the interview for some reason so I need to talk about it to get it out of my head:

Quote:
Miyata: Time flowed differently because of Masakado. That is why, rather than saying that time outside Tokyo was faster, itís better to say that time flowed slower only in Tokyo. This was needed so people could continue their way of life from before the War of the Gods, and is also the reason the water and electricity infrastructure hadnít really changed.
I had assumed that the time dilation was happening in Mikado since:
  • Masakado is just a fucking dead guy and isn't a Time Lord
  • Remember that one NPC who says "America and China have their own problems"?
  • It's just simpler to say that the relatively small area of land that the angels hijacked was affected, and who says YHVH couldn't manipulate time somehow?

But now this means:
  • Worldwide in the game's present, it is now the year 3504 (2012 + 1492), give or take a few years because I can't remember how much time passes after the 2012 stuff and Akira
  • "America and China have their own problems" = they have long since been pounded into concrete paste

So did absolutely no one else in the world survive? Even if most major cities were atomized and a nuclear winter formed, surely someone in, like, the Yukon or Alaska should have survived. Probably no one in those off-the-grid areas would be too interested in summoning demons (maybe Chemtrail). Point is, by 3500 surely a whole new worldwide culture should have developed--a plot twist that could have been pretty awesome.

This isn't a big deal, but, again, they had an easy choice but instead picked the one that bends logic.

True, but since when has SMT given a shit about non-Tokyo Japan let alone the rest of the world?

This is true, but my point was that they had two options (1. time advances normally worldwide except Tokyo or 2. time advances faster only in Mikado) and they chose the one that leaves the door open for you to wonder what's happening elsewhere. All this for a fake medieval city that's pushed aside ASAP.
