Trees can not speak and they certainly can not unionize or make use of hatchet, axe or saw. I don't know what you're going on about, Rush, but it's farcical

I do like the 80s Pink Floyd album, Momentary Lapse of Reason, and for the most part David Gilmour's kinda half-baked lyrics don't stop me from enjoying it(not as much as the drum machines, anyway). But there's one line I just can't overlook:

"Was it love, or was it the idea of being in love? Or was it that hand of fate that seemed to fit just like a glove?"

You can just imagine the thought process here. Hand, glove, fate, fitting, aha! Metaphors! Double meanings! Just one problem, though, you don't wear a hand! If a hand fits like a glove, your love song has gone to a very strange place.

Disclaimer: I kinda feel like any complaint about A Momentary Lapse of Reason that doesn't begin with "Dogs of War" is itself fundamentally flawed.

But anyway, the reason classic Pink Floyd worked was because Gilmour only cared about music and had no lyrical aptitude and Waters only cared about lyrics and had no musical aptitude. They somehow cancelled out one another's failings and combined strengths. Take away one and the other's work was pretty bad... although Gilmour could occasionally get away with not writing lyrics, so his post-breakup stuff isn't universally terrible the way Waters' is.

That being said, Gilmour's worst has nothing on the insipid banality that is a Greg Lake lyric.

No, air is the air that supports the eagle. Love is an abstract concept, and cannot provide any lift for physical objects, including birds.

How can your soul be a hat in a high tree top if you've already established that it's a little black spot on the sun, Sting? How is your soul a hat at all? God damn it, it's not a hat!

And while we're on the subject a skeleton can not choke on a crust of bread. Or much of anything else, quite apart from being dead and thus not able to eat or breath anything, it has no throat muscles for a crust of bread to block off.

Total Eclipse of the Heart has two characters. One, the first person narrator, describes being in the shadow of her love for a second character. However, a total eclipse requires three celestial bodies, the Earth, sun and moon; thus the song should logically have three characters, with one disrupting the relationship of the other two.

Either that or the sun in this metaphor represents hope/happiness/life/etc. and this is actually a song about an abusive relationship, but I don't think that's what they were going for.

The lyrics to Stevie Wonder's Saturn suggests Stevie's grasp of the composition and atmospheric conditions of gas giants might be shaky at best.

Packing my bags, going away
To a place where the air is clean
On Saturn

Going back to Saturn where the rings all glow
Rainbows, moonbeams and orange snow
On Saturn
People live to be two hundred and five
Going back to Saturn where the people smile
Don't need cars because we've learned to fly
On Saturn

"Excuse me, while I kiss this guy"

I mean, it makes no sense in the context of the song.

If just occurred to me that if Johnny B Goode did really play the guitar just like ringing a bell, he must've played some fucking weird concerts.

I Want a New Drug- Mr Lewis' preferences for his medication are needlessly strict. It is likely he will be prescribed a placebo.

The lyric "Ninety-nine miles per hour baby, is how fast that I've got to go" is stuck in my head, and I can't shake the feeling that's probably an unsafe speed for an infant to travel.

Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

So good-bye, yellow brick road
Where the dogs of society howl
You can't plant me in your penthouse
I'm going back to my plough

Back to the howling old owl in the woods
Hunting the horny-back toad
Oh, I've finally decided my future lies
Beyond the yellow brick road

The use of "howl" and "howling" is repetitious, and it's not even justified because owls don't howl.

is this the thread where I complain about "I gazed a gazely stare" from The Man Who Sold the World? Because that line kinda sucks.

My headcanon is that Mssr. Bowie saw someone staring as a Gazelle might.

And his accent just makes the word "Gazelle-y" sound much stranger than usual.

"I know there's something much more/
Something even unbelievers can believe in."

Apparently Burt Bacharach thought that writing a song to a silly name like "Alfie" would be doomed to failure. It shows.

This was covered in another thread last year: it's actually about vampires.

And I'm sorry, Smash Mouth, but all that glitters is not gold.

Is Hotel California also about vampires?

Because I've never been able to read it as being about anything except vampires.

I firmly believe that it is only possible to enjoy the Counting Crows' "Mr. Jones" if you interpret the line "Gray is my favorite color - oh I felt so symbolic yesterday" as sarcastic.

As time goes on and Adam Duritz' hair gets more and more ridiculous, I have a hard time giving it to them.

That song makes significantly more sense when you know that it was originally titled "Vampires In Love". (Not a joke. Actually fact.)

Probably. Also, Elenor Rigby is a horrifying monster that Father MacKenzie has to put down.
