Default Let's Design Demons Like PROFESSIONALS

IF YOU DON'T WANT TO READ ANY EXPLANATION, JUST GO DRAW YOUR OWN TAKE ON 'MEDUSA', THEN COME BACK HERE AND POST IT, GO GO GO

Oh, and demon design spoilers for SMT4 are ahead, if that perturbs you.

The demons and monsters and folk creatures and divine beings and assorted mythological figures in the Shin Megami Tensei series were known for being designed by a hip fella named Kaneko. The dude had a knack for doing really clever riffs on many of the subjects, often not stopping at just the usual, obvious, literal depiction but finding really fascinating imagery hidden in the concept of the creature and coming up with something stylish and new, and in some cases getting really deep and metaphorical with the representations. Other times they were just cool. And some of them were rare misses, but let's not dwell on those.

The dude didn't come back for Shin Megami Tensei IV, however, and a few different guest artists took his spot to cook up new designs for the game. Some of them, like the Minotaur, are fantastic, and exactly the sort of stylish, imaginative take that Kaneko might go with. Other artists, meanwhile, didn't seem to Get It, and folks hated them, and thought other folks could do better.

So YOU GUYS.

Do better.

This week, come up with some sort of design for Medusa, the first new demon design that everybody hated.

Here's what she looked like in the game:

Truth be told, I actually don't hate her design. It's a little too Death Metal Album Cover meets Saturday Morning Cartoon, but it's got some cool ideas, like the hair being snake skeletons, and the way they're mingled with chains and such, and compared to some of the other new designs which actually are just horrible, this one don't seem so bad to me.

But MOST PEOPLE hate it, and Medusa's probably one of the most instantly recognizable figures of the Bad Ones, so she's who we're starting with.

So come up with a design. You can actually try, or you can do some mspaint wackiness, or whatever. Just riff on Medusa...who has got some good concepts to riff on...however you see fit, but with an eye to doing at least something new or different with your take.

On the road to next week folks can come up with some sort of consensus about which they like best, and we'll move on to another demon. We will do this until Talking Time has its own Demon Compendium.

And if you don't want to draw Medusa, or would like to draw more than just Medusa, you may also come up with your own take on the demon Octopus Prime, because today is Octopus Prime Appreciation Day.

Or draw the two of them fighting, Octopus Prime being slowly turned to stone but fighting to the end and using his petrified limbs to strike Medusa extra-hard.

Or maybe suddenly think 'saaaaay, that gives me an idea!...Medusa could combine with some octopus-like imagery pretty well!...'

But no.

Too late.

I already did that.

Now go.

Surpass upside-down face octopus Medusa.

This...

This is actually a pretty awesome idea. Dunno if it should be in Pit of Flames, though, since I'd love to see some honest attempts, and I have my own ideas for a few Aztec divinities Kaneko skipped.

I made a Medusa for the game I'm working on:

I like to think that she can't control the snakes unless she does the Radical Edward arm wave thing to hypnotize them or something.

Though he is an inspiration, we are trying to put our own spin on things, not to just mindlessly ape Kaneko here, Wolfgang.

Well you certainly wouldn't want to be in front of Medusa.

please judge this artwork based on the merits of the concept and not its scrawled-in-a-three-ring-binder-during-pre-algebra execution, thx

although in retrospect the concept is pretty scrawled-in-a-three-ring-binder-during-pre-algebra, too

um

anyway

enjoy

TK totally drew that, dude. That's the exact kind of aesthetic he usually aims for.

Default This probably isn't as clever as I think it is

Scrawled in roughly two minutes on a post-it note, here we have the most brilliant Reverse Medusa.

That medusa (the one in the game) looks like she belongs in a Marvel comic from the late 80s

I have zero artistic ability, so I will not be drawing, though I did have an idea.

People always focus on snake-head medusa, which is great, but seems impractical 90% of the time. I'm picturing medusa incognito. A tall, slender olive-skinned woman in a flowing dress and a tall head-wrap like Erykah Badu. You wouldn't look at twice except that she is strikingly beautiful, but almost sad looking. And then you notice her eyes, and her pupils are dimond shaped, when she gives you tired smile you swear for second you see a forked tongue.

(I feel like this should be moved to the creating board, maybe?)

In this scenario, you are describing grad student Sisyphus. His labors are unending - he just can't get motivated.

THE BOULDER IS DEPRESSION.

I was thinking of a more tragic take on Medusa, where what you see at first is beautiful, but if you get too close you see her true form, which is horrifying, which further intensifies the cruelty of her cursed form.

And seriously, we are THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX™ here, or did you miss upsidedown octopus medusa?

Honestly, except for the face I really like the SMT4 Medusa design. Designing her to be a snaky dominatrix kind of makes entirely too much sense.

Now Diana... she looks like something from Heavy Metal.

No, you wouldn't look at her twice because you would be petrified the first time you looked at her.

Medusa's fine. The art is just shit, that's all!

Also, Deptford, I've made this thread official with the "cu chulainn" tag. You're welcome.

Here, I drew this completely unrelated demon for this thread.

Mascot Frosty Pop Kid
LIGHT-CHAOS

On hot summer days, he can be seen attending to the needs of parched children throughout suburbia, cooling them off with delicious Frosty Pop brand ice pops. However, he has absolute zero regard for any structure or person that stands between him and his target, causing some adults to question how beneficial his services really are.
