The hat theme is not one I would have guessed even if given 100 tries but I'm very happy with it.

This looks really good and I'm so happy to see what may be something more free-roaming than the Galaxy and 3D games. 3D Land helped get me back into Mario since I never quite fell in love with the Galaxies the way others had. And 3D World is just magnificent. I still love playing it, watching my girlfriend play it, and co-oping with her too.

The one thing I'm sort of down about is that SMO looks like it might be strictly single player. Multiplayer and different characters were pushed hard in early 3D World material, so not seeing any of that angle suggests to me it might not be in there. Peach being kidnapped also probably means we won't get to play as her either, which is a particular downer for me because she's my second favourite character to play as in 3D World (generally I do Mario and Peach, girlonion does Luigi and Toad).

Still, pretty hyped. And unless some unexpectedly disappointing reveals come out about this game, it'll be the thing that I buy Switch for in December.

The only thing I wanted was wide open levels to explore like Mario 64 and Nintendo seems to have heard my cries.

I think my favorite thing about it so far is that the city area sort of confirms my headcanon that Mario is actually a refuge from the Roaring 20s that wound up in the Mushroom Kindgom somehow and decided "You know what? This place is fun. I think I'll stay here."

This sounds pretty good. I liked SM3D Land a lot, and I played 3D World until I beat its regular worlds, but honestly got burned out a couple times trying to finish it, even though I wouldn't call it bad. A change of pace is good because I'm pretty sure even the same team responsible for 3D Land/World and the NSMB games could still make a really good, compelling Mario 64/Sunshine/Galaxy styled 3D experience.

He's really the best.

I'm all over this. I just wish the rumors that it were coming at launch were true, but at least I have a game to look forward to this holiday season!

This looks pretty ill. The Land/World/New games were fun but felt kind of formulaic to me, and this is much more up my alley.

Like I said in the Switch thread, Mario games were best when they challenged the audience's conception of what Mario games could even be, but that ended with Mario 64. If that's an unrealistic wish, then to me the right path for the 3D Mario series is to settle down on exploration-based gameplay --- the style that only 64 and Sunshine adopted. While small gameplay iterations would be expected within this mold, making each game centered on a unique, fleshed out location would be the way of attracting interest and giving players a reason to pay attention to each new release ("the Sunshine model" as I called it).

I was not expecting that unique location to be "Mario enters the reverse-Twilight zone".

Glad to know I'm not the only one who got a serious Sonic Adventure 2 vibe from the city bits in the video.

But seriously, on board one-thousand percent for SMO. Inject it right into my veins please

I'm not sure I'm sold on Regular-Shaped People in a Mario game, but this looks like a lot of fun.

I'll brook no putting down of 3D World though, that game is a veritable fountain of awesome, fresh ideas.

The difference between this and the 3D Sonic games is it seems like the incongruity between Mario and the real world is the point, as opposed to Sonic Adventure's baffling decision to just plop Sonic and his Stupid Cartoon Animal friends in a normal city among normal humans and never acknowledge it and IT DRIVES ME CRAZY WHY WOULD THEY DO THIS.

Anyway, Mario Oddyssey looks cool.

Agreed. The game also has weird forest land with robots and vegetable world, right, so it seems like each area will be populated by a different set of bizzare boys.

I didn't love this trailer. The changes in aesthetics from scene to scene was a little too much for me. They were probably conveying the concept of traveling to different worlds or dimensions or something, but it just felt disjointed. The real-world scene in particular was jarring.

Despite that, I'm sure the game will be great, because all mainline Mario games are great. I'm just not sure that trailer would have sold me if I weren't someone who would've bought the game sight unseen anyway.

There's an Expresso Street in the city. Which is either the annoying misspelling of espresso, or it's named after the Donkey Kong Country pal and the whole city is Donkey Kong themed along with Dixie Street and Diddy's Mart (which would be really cool).

Or it could be a pun on Express and Espresso, which I've seen before on actual coffee shops...

I wonder if the rabbit nasties exist because some evil magician (Bowser?) pulled them out of an evil hat.
