The only particular things I might dare to consider "galling" is a lack of Mega Mans 1, 3, and Castlevania 3 on a bit of kit that is going to have games from those series on it.

... I'd also swap out Double Dragon for River City Ransom.

Really though, it's pretty good. Pac-Man, Ghosts 'n Goblins, and a few bum first-party selections drag the whole list down, but hey, ~25/30 ain't bad. Heck, even if you only want to count 20 games in there you like, that's still three bucks a game, which is a perfectly fine deal if you want to math it out that way.

Still, this is a very neat product and I'll likely buy it. $60 is a nice price point!
The lack of CV3 MIGHT (and read this as a big MIGHT) be if they're using a Famiclone chip in the box with some roms baked into the board rather than software emulation. The Famiclone chips often have issues with CV3 because of a missing component on the board. Not sure Nintendo would make that same weird mistake though, unless this was farmed out to some shitty Chinese company and they didn't care much about the internals.

I'm particularly excited to play Zelda 2 (my cart's save battery died in the 1990's!) and Super Mario 2 (lost my cart somehow). I haven't played either since the early 90's.

Not to mention to fact that my whole NES collection was recently destroyed in an apartment fire anyway. Which renders the above history moot.

I love that the box design even mimics the original.

Edit: Important question: does the lid flip up? If so what's inside?

I assume Konami is holding back Contra and Castlevania III for an upcoming Contra/Castlevania Collection programmed by M2 for PS4 and 3DS.

Putting too many games in a collection like this destroys their perceived value, and perceived value is essential to Nintendo's business plan and entire identity. They want this to be cheap, but not to cheapen their properties.

More third-party titles would incur licensing fees and drive up the price. These games were licensed by Nintendo, but Nintendo does not own them.

Different game mappers require separate Q&A (hence the lack of Castlevania III, I would think — it used a mapper no other game in this collection does) and drive up the price.

It wouldn't need NES parts, right? Just a solid internal emulator and the ability to dump the game to RAM to load.

There is a flap there; what's under it?

So, what hardware is in this crazy thing? Any chance they just put a Wii without the optical drive in this?

$60 for 30 games is still just $2 a game and that ignores the not-inconsiderable added aesthetic value of TINY NES

I occurred to me that I have a full sized wii disc with just a dump of Mario All-stars on it so this is probably s better value than I give it credit.

Judging by the photos on Polygon, the cartridge lid seems to be just an aesthetic embellishment on the housing. I don't think it actually opens.

I'm guessing hardware wise it's something similar to a retropie.

Excellent points.

I wonder how much back and forth had to happen to settle on these 30 games.

Designer: "I was thinking a solid 50 games, all the best the NES has to offer"

Management: "Just Donkey Kong".

So do those controllers plug into and work with Wiimotes? That'd be interesting, and I might just pick one of those up...

That's why I was thinking Nintendo published only, but yeah I can see how a 100+ GAMES!! on the box would make it seem like cheap trash.

Well they're all by third parties that have been trusted to make games featuring Nintendo owned characters in the past. Well except Konami, but they did contribute to Smash Bros once.

Guys, there's no way that that cartridge flap is going to open.

And even if it did, there's nothing that they could reasonably put inside that wouldn't be a disappointment.

A tiny motorized Kirby that waved "hi" every time you opened the flap.

I'm still genuinely surprised that the game roster isn't just the pixel-box first-year NES games (or, perhaps more specifically, the GBA NES Classics games). That's the Nintendo thing to do, not... go out there and try to pick a top-to-bottom good lineup.

Now that I think about it, this thing would be a nice companion to the All-Stars re-release. They'd look pretty sweet on a shelf...
