Also, my bud Zach has just got the first print copies of his most recent self-published comic, Petrichor! It's a really gorgeous little bit of art.

RIP Mark Fisher

I remember reading his blog k-punk a lot in college and learning all this weird Theory stuff combined with pop culture.

Hey TT parents of young children! My good friend and colleague's sister is officially a published author and illustrator today with the release of Not Quite Narwhal! I got to read an proof copy and it's got a lot of heart and charm, along with a great message about alternative families. If that sounds like something you're interested in, I hope you'll check it out!

Super last minute, but I have two tickets to a Cory Doctorow/John Scalzi book signing in Santa Cruz, CA on Wed 4/26. They had originally and mistakenly tweeted out the date of 4/29, when I am in town, but I can't go on 4/26 because I will be very far away.

I've made arrangements with the bookstore for them to hold my signed copy of Walkaway, and I'll be picking that up separately, but they said I could have someone else use the tickets so they don't go to waste. I'm sure you'll have the opportunity to buy their books and have them signed at the event.

I read the hardback collection of The Eltingville Club . It's nice to see somebody show the worse parts of nerds. And the spinoff, Northwest Comix Collective reminded me of some people I know.

I went to CAKE today! I got a few cool little books:

I bought Travelogue and a little Zelda Zine from Aatmaja Pandya. She forbid me from reading the Zelda one until I play BOTW, so now I have to buy a Switch.

I got this rad-as-hell Earthbound Postcard from Andrea Bell:

I got Ben Sears's Towns, Townspeople, and Towns 2, which are basically D&D inspiration catnip:

And I bought this awesome Pizza book from my friend Beth. There are like 4 different ways to read it, it's amazing.

And finally, Evan Dahm was on the list of artists, but he cancelled at the last minute, so I again missed my chance to buy Rice Boy from him. One of these days I will own that book.

Final rating for CAKE: A+

Why would a comic publisher even bother getting the license to Atari's Centipede

the entire premise is "there is a centipede"

just make a comic about that, no one can stop you

they licensed a font

According to Chris Sims, who is writing a Swordquest comic, they apparently approaching writers with a list of Atari properties and asking them to pitch something.

The Swordquest Retronauts episode details this. It's definitely worth a listen.

For those who enjoyed Ann Leckie's Imperial Radch series, there's an excerpt from the early parts of her new novel, Provenance, on Motherboard.

So did Kieron Gillen. Although I guess he writes a lot of Star Wars stories these days.

I’m excited to announce I’ll be doing a signing at New York Comic Con on Friday, October 6th, from 10:30–11:30 AM at the First Second Books booth, #2239. We’ll be giving away free copies of this 11x17″ poster for my upcoming graphic novel series Threadworlds during the signing. If you want to bring Avatar/Korra stuff I’ll be happy to sign that too.

TO BE CLEAR: Threadworlds: Volume One is not finished, nor is there is a release date yet. I’m still hard at work on the layouts, which should be finished this year; then I’ll be tackling the final pages and color next year. But I’m excited to share the above artwork with you to give you an updated look at the characters and a glimpse into the world; and to poke my head up out of the ground for a bit to say hi at NYCC!

(I’ll also being doing another signing with Dark Horse at NYCC on Saturday 8/7. I’ll post about that separately soon.)

See you soon! Love, Bryan

So for last Festivus Buge gave me the first volume of Rat Queens, which I enjoyed, and I've since bought volumes 2 and 3. I just finished volume 3 and it had such a 'what??? noooooooo!' cliffhanger I had to look and see when volume 4 is coming out, and it turns out it came out just now! Hooray!

And it also looks like the series had a hiatus at some point and the issues contained in volume 4 are a sort of soft-reboot.

Nooooooooo!

(also something about one of the original artists being a real bastard? I didn't get the whole story)

So, how does the soft-reboot hold up? I'm super bummed I won't get to see what happens with the original cliffhanger, maybe it will eventually hit some of the same story beats?

Also it looks like Braga is one of the main cast in the soft-reboot, I can get down with that.

I don't know, SB. I had basically the same reaction as you, and, as I understand it, a lot of people. I thought about reading the soft-reboot, but ehhh... it's just not the same.

So I picked up Rat Queens Vol. 4 to see how the soft-reboot turned out, it collects the first five new issues of the series.

Honestly, with some of the doom and gloom I read about it, it was alright? First off, it's not a total reboot, and even 'soft reboot' might not be right. It doesn't reboot the story, everything that happened in the first three volumes still happened here. It just picks up some undefined amount of time after the end of Vol. 3, and after Hannah rejoined the group, and I guess everything is cool at Mage U (cool enough for her to carry on her business anyway), and also her father is alive (though we never saw him die, we only had the word of a demon to go on and, well, he didn't look super trustworthy anyway).

It's like they just wanted to brush aside all the drama and the Vol. 3 cliffhanger and get back to a point in the story where the Queens just go back on ridiculous adventures again, which is simultaneously relieving and frustrating. It's relieving because I was bummed at first at the news of a soft reboot, since the first three volumes have some really entertaining moments and I didn't want them to no longer 'count', but it's frustrating because I want to know what happens between the end of Vol. 3 and Vol. 4 and the series doesn't look to be in any great hurry to tell us.

As for the tone, it definitely leans more into silliness than the first three volumes did. It's not sanitized by any means and still has some of the innuendo and raunchiness that it had previously, but it's like its default state now is 'comedy'. There's some good comedy to be had, but I am looking forward to it getting back to some more dramatic stakes. It does seem to be building up to something, whether that something will be as dramatic as sky-Cthulhu or Mage U intrigue remains to be seen.

Braga makes a fine addition to the Queens and I'm glad she's now a regular.

So yeah, Vol. 4 is better than I feared, though I can totally understand if it puts off longtime fans. I guess I'm lucky to have only started reading it this year, I didn't have any long hiatuses nor drip-drip-drip of bad news to worry over.

Tomato/Clyde Mandelin's new book is out. It's about machine-translating FFIV, and if anyone followed any of his tweets/streams while he was playing through it then you know that some magical things happened.

Hey, does anyone know if there are any good books about Eugène François Vidocq or Pornthip Rojanasunand. I see one book written by the latter, but I'd like to specifically know about any quality books on these subjects. I'm looking for a gift for my sister.
