To be fair, his mother died well before he became Lieutenant Kickass, because it was very important for the narrative to kill her off at the earliest convenience to provide additional motive and conflict for the two men in her life.

I also admired the heroic courage of a Hollywood film finally willing to feature a protagonist who has Father Issues. And then, when the more interesting father played by a more charismatic actor dies and resolves that whole arc in a pat and abrupt way, the protagonist becomes even easier to relate to by being a non-entity, having no distinguishing characteristics or sense of personality or further development as a person at all beyond "has a family, would care if they fucking died".

IT IS A TRITE NON-STORY, TEDIOUSLY TOLD WITHOUT INSIGHT OR FINESSE

The human element of Shin Godzilla (and others, but that one did an extra-good job) demonstrated how to make the human element not only engaging in its own right, but an equally driving and vital part of the whole experience that is always tied into and interacting with the monster side of things in a way that makes them all symbiotic and complementary, and, you know, a functional narrative. '14 protagonist's whole story could be replaced by almost anyone or anything else without meaningfully impacting the monster side of things; the entire human element is just a bland curtain, lacking any depth or point of interest of its own, prioritized to obscure and put off and tease and drag out the giant monster stuff as much as possible. It's telling that the big breakthrough moment of the film is the "decision" to finally just let the giant monsters fucking fights each other, for God's sake.

Shin Godzilla also had women who "Did Things Besides Looking Worried In Reaction Shots" and "Mattered At All"...and for that matter, so did lots of older Godzilla and even Gamera movies, too! '14 actually handled gender representation worse than a bunch of frequently cheesy and un-woke decades-older Japanese films, when it was presumably trying to make something easier for a modern audience to relate to and take seriously. Which, in this case, unfortunately made their mission statement instead be "tell the most cliched and generic military-tinged conventional protagonist story possible", as opposed to trying to do anything adventurous outside the monster scenes.

I don't know whether they genuinely couldn't come up with a more effective approach, or whether there was some decree from above to make the human side as accessible and pandering to standard target young male audiences as possible because they were worried people would balk at the potentially-cheesy weird wild monster stuff without something gently generic to ease them in...but either way, be it lack of imagination by the filmmakers or lack of confidence in the material by the studio, it's a shame that it left so much of the movie so uninteresting.

"...I found it interesting--"

I MEANT INTERESTING TO PEOPLE WITH INCREDIBLY REFINED ARTISTIC SENSIBILITIES LIKE MYSELF, YOU IGNORANT CHILD

But nah, if somebody liked it that's fine, it's just that I

did not

Also Godzilla's atomic breath in '14 reminded me to a distracting degree of this music video's atomic breath, but that's not really anybody's fault I suppose.

Look the important thing about the human cast of Godzilla (2014) is that Garry "Optimus Primal" Chalk shows up for a few minutes.

One of my favorite aspects of G2014 was showing the military, not as evil or some lionized ideal, but level headed people dealing with something waaaaaaaaaaaaay outside their normal sphere. Also I cannot lavish enough praise on that bus driver in the bridge scene.

Also I will always love the jacob's ladder effect presaging the breath weapon.

I should get back to this thread sometime and review the Godzilla Anime(s) but that would mean I'd have to watch the second one (ugh) and rewatch the first one because it was so bland and awful that I forgot most of the plot shortly after watching it the first time.

There is now an official Godzilla constellation, visible in the gamma ray spectrum.

I'm a little nicer about them, but it's a weird mix to me of some really interesting ideas and just taking things a little too seriously while being a bit dull (the first isn't interesting until the last act, if I recall) and not nearly enough monster fights. That said, it has one really good idea: Mechagodzilla City. That's such a great idea and somehow wasted because at the end of that story the city doesn't turn into a dinosaur again! Dammit, why are you afraid of fun, Godzilla-anime!?

Jesus Fucking Christ, Godzilla: The Planet Eater is miserable. The Godzilla content is cut down to the bare minimum, but the pointless babble is turned up to 11. Fuck this movie. I almost want them to make another Godzilla anime to see if they can somehow continue the trend of getting worse with each one.

Yeah, I'm definitely not interested in any more of that crap. I think they obviously didn't want to make a Godzilla series in the first place but ended up with some kind of mandate to use the license.

The rumor is that Toho got in trouble for making Shin Godzilla, because Legendary has live-action rights through 2020. But since it was such a huge success, they wanted to follow up on it right away with... something... anything.

I'm a complete mark for Ghidorah but, nah. One was enough.

It definitely feels like it's trying to be ambitious with crazy ideas but not, like, being fun or... like, at least in the first one, there were ships buzzing around fighting Godzilla. Godzilla just stands there being attacked by an equally static death metaphor. You do know these are called "motion pictures", right?

And really, the big ideas about death, despite trying to add a lot of gravity to it are pretty shallow. And also, kind of confusing based on where the movie ends? I'm REALLY unsure what the movie is trying to get at, but it seems like it wanted to have a poignant ending that really just makes me confused about what the message is, here. The whole trilogy is an increasingly joyless slog that is reluctant to be a Godzilla movie, despite overtures to the franchise.

That could have been a really cool and interesting take on Ghidora

sure wasn't though

And that was the only part of the movie that even had potential

And the idea of Ghidorah being a sort of cosmic death egregore/tulpa (look it up) and Godzilla having to fight a being that bypasses logical rules of the universe could be interesting. But it's mostly Godzilla getting tied up and sort of struggling. I think even if you are into Godzilla bondage, this is going to be disappointed because he simply doesn't struggle enough!
