I just read First Strike. It was at least slightly more coherent than Revolutions, but on the down side didn't have anything even slightly as good as the Revolutions MTMTE tie-in where the Scavengers get involved with the Dire Wraith who wants them to help him perform the ritual of The Crossover to raise Awareness of The Brand.

The whole "Hasbro Universe" thing has been a huge bust for me. It's just way overcomplicated the TF titles I was following, resulted in a MASK series that was one of the worst-written comics I've ever read, and produced two dud crossovers.

I don't even get what they were trying to accomplish. It's not like MASK, ROM, Micronauts, or Visionaries have toys on shelves, even collector-grade stuff.

I kind of didn't like that MTMTE tie-in because it just felt like Roberts telling everyone that he was on this other level, so much better than your silly crossover, and that's pretty well indicative of where he's gone as a writer.

Not that Revolution was some great thing, but it was pretty fun and not bad as far as IDW's past TF events have gone. It was better realized than Combiner Wars, for example.

I missed First Strike and I've been kind of picking up the pieces of it in the other books I read.

I'm kind of on the fence about that. He's done a lot to elevate TF above where it was in terms of fiction, and certainly has written some of the very best TF stories in the past decade or more. But the last year of material has been much more divisive in terms of its quality. Some would say that he's escaped pretty far up his own ass.

I don't know exactly where I stand yet, because I don't think I can judge until Lost Light is done. And regardless I'm sure I'll still find something to like about it. There's only one piece of TF media that I actually hate.*

*Yes Kiss Players is worse than this but I haven't actually read it, and I never will, and I only feel qualified to hate something that I've experienced in full

Personally, I don't see this year as being any different on that front than any of the MTMTE stuff, especially sicne so much of it is based on plot elements introduced in that series. My main concern with Roberts is that I feel like he's wrapping up a lot of his plotlines at this point, so I'm hoping his tenure isn't coming to an end.

If you put a gun to my head, I'd have a hard time choosing between the Energon cartoon and Drift: Empire of Stone as my least-favourite TF media.

I'm not exactly sure what IDW's plans are for Roberts, but the current ongoing titles will be coming to an end soon and there will be another big event. The rumors are that it will be Unicron, and people are also wondering if they may reboot the whole continuity. Nothing known for sure.

(Yeah Energon was pretty dire!)

I know they've already announced Unicron: The Darkest Hour as the next big event, with issue #0 coming out on Free Comic Book Day, but I hadn't heard they were ending the ongoing titles. Looks like they've at least been solicited through April.

...I liked Regeneration One.

I thought the whole Hasbro universe was because they were reviving things for movies and such.

Even there it makes no damn sense. The Bay movies were the first exposure of many people to Transformers in years if not more, and certainly had no connection to the preceding francishes.

It drew elements, though, and that seems to be what comics are largely viewed as with relation to movies: Idea farms.

The Fallen, Drift, the Wreckers -- all originated in comics.

The way they were used in the movies barely related to the original concepts, though, and the Bay movies have had plenty of their own concepts.

Sure, but I mean, I'm pretty sure Marvel and DC have outright said the comics are basically idea farms for the movie studios, so why must Hasbro, who's been trying to get their own cinematic universe off the ground, be any different in that regard?

Other media make their own things as well, I know that. I'm just relating what appears to be the prevailing mindset with regards to this stuff right now.

Man, I bought one of those Image Turtles comics as a tween, back when the franchise was more-or-less totally dormant. It probably goes without saying that I was very confused by its contents.

I thought they finished off Forever War a while ago, or was that just announced and it never went anywhere?

"It was intended to be revived in 2009, but it was plagued by several delays and was ultimately cancelled again by the Nickelodeon buyout."

Ah, I get it now. I thought you meant IDW was doing reprints of the eurocomic adaptation of Haldeman's book.

Yeah, that's Titan doing those. Or did those. They're now in the process of putting out the comic-book version of Forever Free.

The Optimus Prime annual with Thundercracker's movie about Starscream is delightful.

I did not read that, but I remember chuckling at the solicitation copy when December's Previews came in:

Quote:
THUNDERCRACKER IN: STARSCREAM: THE MOVIE! The good news: somebody finally gave Thundercracker money to make a film. The bad news: it's Starscream, and he wants a biographical picture to win over the people of Earth. Will Thundercracker stand by his principles or... well, no, he makes the movie.

So, Chief Creative Officer and Editor-in-Chief Chris Ryall is out.

As is PR Manager Steve Scott.

I wonder what the hell is going on over there. Hope this doesn't turn out to be a bad thing.
