Oh damn. Maybe my last new 3DS game purchase, but a heck of a good one.

Okay, I'm willing to take a risk on another Blaster Master game. Inticreates' recent works may not be spectacular, but they've done great stuff with retraux style games in the past.

Being that blaster master is one of my favorite series, and the PSX one left me so.. Hurt.. I'm hopeful.

Still need to try that wiiware one again. Got stuck in one of the top-down sections, as one does in a blaster master game.

I actually enjoyed the PSX one, for what it's worth. It's the Genesis one that's awful.

If you can stand some bullet-hell sections and some cheap-looking visuals, Overdrive is pretty solid.

I love that the PSX one is a direct sequel to the World of Power book.

Genesis Blaster Master is about what you'd expect it to be, given that it's an outsourced port by British devs Software Creations

They don't say it's a remake but it looks like a remake.

Ditto. It's not a great game, but everything works well enough.

The Game Boy Color game also looked like the NES game but did its own thing.

I'm down with the art of Jason and Sophia the 3rd, but I'm quite confused by cat thigh suit lady (Eve?). Oh well. God, can I dream Naoki Kodaka will come out of retirement to score this?

The WiiWare Blaster Master needed the following things:
  1. more location diversity and better level design in general
  2. less cheap enemy design
  3. a camera that doesn't make "right in front of you" a blind spot
  4. 2D visuals of a better or more aesthetically appealing quality than "Tarted Up Flash Game"
  5. an option for controllers besides Wii Remote only 'cuz SERIOUSLY, WHAT THE FUCK?!

I think that's actually a sword and not a tail.

I still feel burned over the 'meh' Wiiware version, but I will remain cautiously optimistic about this.

Because I want to believe.

My lifelong complaint about this series still stands: too much blasting, not enough mastery. Adjust that ratio and I'm in.

Looks remake-ish, but modernized in various ways like letting you swap out weapon upgrades - which hopefully will make the top-down segments a lot more playable. If we really get the classic tank action paired with some actually good interior sequences, this could be completely fantastic. Fingers crossed.

Now I'm going to have to disagree; the amount of Mastery required gets in the way of all the Blasting.

Tweak the top-down sections so they aren't unfair, very prolonged moments and drop the dumb "lose gun power when you get hit" mechanic and the game will already be in better hands.

Also, a password/save/suspend system.

One of the screenshots showed a weapon selection menu, so I'm optimistic on that front. Or At least I'm hoping it has a Cave Story-esque solution where weapon upgrades are super common.

And it being on the 3DS means that a mini-map is almost a gimme, which would help a lot for making the top-down sections more tolerable.

It had its own map layouts though. All of these screenshots - %100 of them - are replicas of areas from the first game. That could still be a starting point for a new game, but I'm just sayin'.

Every time I see the concept art on this page, I think I'm seeing preg/vore fanart because of the way the lady is cradling that globe.

The main problem with Blaster Master is that the coolest upgrades all come at the very end of the game. Driving on walls/ceilings is always the coolest part of the game but it's also the shortest part. Also the swimming one is really cool but it becomes useless almost immediately after acquiring it as you get it from the only level that requires being in the water.

This game has always had so much potential. The NES game is awesome in its own right but even as a huge fan of the game it is admittedly flawed. Here's to hoping they decide to give more meaningful upgrades earlier on!

Was Fred a part of the original Japanese version? I find it interesting that they have that in some form here, for how different everything else is from the U.S. version.

No, Fred as a character was not. They added the pet frog angle in Blaster Master for the NES localization. The Japanese Meta Fight fell into sci-fi anime tropes...but still had giant frog bosses! Just not your radioactive pet Fred. Link is to my site, BTW.
