DISCO Season 2 is officially in production, and there's a nifty little trailer that got released for it:

For those of you who are region-locked, click here

A few things of note from the trailer:

-Revamped classic TOS uniforms look swank; there are skirt-type versions too.

-Blueprints for "L'Rell's Garden/Chambers" set construction

-Trailer is using TOS voice samples from Pike & Spock, heavily hinting at their involvements in the next season. Pike would have been captain of the Enterprise at this point, and Spock would have been its science officer.

-More blueprints with "Section 31" written on them.

-Hallways and computer screens with "USS Enterprise" or "1701" written on them.

Definitely yanking really hard on the nostalgia-lever. I don't mind that much, but look forwards to all the hot takes that do.

Discovery showrunners fired over budget and abuse issues.

The article mainly talks about them being over budget, but the verbal abuse of the writers (and attempts to cover it up) seem like the last straw.

I would be more concerned, but this is pretty classic trajectory for a Trek show to be taking. Maybe everything will be ironed out by Season 3 on the production side and we can have the classic Season 3 leap.

Season 2 trailer!

While I'm lukewarm on the music choice, I'm actually rather encouraged by what I've seen so far. It looks like it might even be..... fun?

I'm not gonna pretend that I think this looks good, but like, I'm not remotely gonna begin to pass judgement this early on before actually watching the show. Because nothing is gonna stop me from watching it.

Yeah, that was a dire trailer, tbh. I'll give the show a fair shake, but yikes.

That’s cool.

L’rell still looks like Giger though.

I'd come to terms with weirdo-Klingons. I really could care less if they got hair back or not.

But *this*. This trailer makes me tingle with excitement. How long do we have to wait? Until January? I really hope the world doesn't end before then.

I finally caught it, Space was gracious enough to air it immediately following the first new episode of Doctor Who.

It was good. Tilly solves a problem in a very Tilly way, it was the sort of incidental character beat I wish the first season had more of (or at all).

The whole thing about the alien and her entire race being born at the same time as her planet was weird, how does that even work? Is the planet only 17 years old too? But besides that it was a nice little short. I'm looking forward to the rest.

I do not have access to CBS All-Access, so no. Not yet.

Edit: I read nothing but complaints about it from Star Trek nerds online, so it must have been good.

It was ok. I’m not like super stoked. Feels like that “tales of babylon 5” thing from way back. Cheaply produced, but ok.

So once I actually saw the show properly and not just from screenshots, I realised that the Klingon design in Discovery isn't "weird", it's pretty in line with Next Gen's design. I figured that they were shaving their heads for fashion. Looks like I was right!

Finished a rewatch of this show. I've come to terms with a lot of its idiosyncrasies. But on a small note, it's damn weird that they'll pin the Medal of Honor on Saru - a man with career aspirations to become a captain - and then not give him command. It's actually pretty messed up!

I finally got access to it. It was weird. Rather nonsensical, but it was fun to see Tilly be Tilly.

The second episode of these Short Treks came out a few days ago and man. I think Michael Chabon is confused? Because he basically wrote a Doctor Who episode instead of a Star Trek episode. It was still pretty good though. I’m now a little more optimistic about him helming the new Picard show.

I liked it. It was really nicely shot, and a fun way to do a lot with basically just one actor. And it’s nice to have this “short story” format for a bit, in the setting of a show that’s very serial.

The third Short Trek episode came out a week or so ago; I forgot to comment on it. This one was about Commander Saru's origin story. Which was not exactly what I was expecting, but it was interesting I suppose. I assume we'll go back to his homework this upcoming season.

Speaking of, new trailer dropped. I am VERY hype:

Loved the Saru short. Best one yet.

So I watched the first 3 episodes of this show and I really want to know what the background is for production of the 2-parter "movie" thing that doesn't have anything to do with the actual environment of the core show. I understand it gave a lot of backstory and context for Michael and the Klingon war, but I really really didn't like it and thought the third episode, the actual pilot of the show, was a lot better. IIRC, the "movie" was originally shown on regular TV to try and hook people into CBS All Access?

Yeah.

(The elements those two episodes introduce will matter more later, though. Think of it like a prologue, basically.)

Yeah, The Vulcan Hello/Battle at the Binary Stars may not seem immediately connected, but they're important as the season goes along, and it's better to have the introduction than flashback to it for background.

Also, don't look at any Star Trek Disco news from the past day or two until you get to the end of the season because hella spoilers!

Yes, I quite enjoyed the season premiere. Pretty much every character felt more, I dunno, at ease? Less awkward? I'm not sure how to articulate it but they all just felt more natural and comfortable with each other.

A couple of the jokes fell flat, but I appreciated the effort all the same. Though Pike's bit at the end comparing himself to Lorca was maybe just a touch too cheeky, but I can forgive it.

Is Doctor-Engineer lady joining the cast? I like her.

Also I saw the death of Science Officer Douchebag coming a mile away. Nothing of value was lost.

Tig Notaro is on this show now?!

Dang it, she’s like my favorite person. I hope they don’t kill her.
