Hey Beat, I was wondering, what do you think of Luke Cage and Iron Fist?

Meet 'Marvel's The Offenders,' as M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, Tigra, Dazzler, and Howard the Duck get Animated on Hulu

A bevy of notable creators, including Kevin Smith, Patton Oswalt, and Chelsea Handler, are behind four upcoming Marvel Television animated series coming to Hulu, leading into a special animated event!

Marvel characters M.O.D.O.K., Hit-Monkey, Tigra, Dazzler, and Howard the Duck are all getting animated at Hulu – and hopefully you’re not (too) offended!
Huh.

I . . . like the concept of M.O.D.O.K, Tigra/Dazzler, and Howard the Duck cartoons in theory, but "This is going to be so offensive!!!" is uhhh not the approach I would want with this material.

M.O.D.O.K./Patton Oswalt seems like the most promising match of material and creator here.

love when cartoon ducks aren't afraid to get a little "politically incorrect"

I don’t get the sense from these brief blurbs that they’re even really going for bad “that’s so offensive!” humor. It’s just a play on the Defenders. That’s not to say this sound promising.

You can't just have Kevin Smith write a Steve Gerber character and have former longtime South Park staff work on Tigra and Dazzler and tell me not to be offended.

the blurb for tigra/dazzler already used the descriptor "woke" so
it's already dead
either they genuinely mean it, but you can't self-label and pull that off, or they mean it ironically, in which case fuck off

also what really frazzles me is that they're using marvel c and d-listers in this wry way as if their mere existence and someone paying attention to them is the joke and that's always such a dishonest way to engage with fringe material like this

My read is that descriptions of the shows and some of the people making them suggest that it's probably a little of both.

I wouldn't hold this against a woman breaking into comedy writing, and I don't think it's accurate to describe her in that way.

Mark in her favorite, if anything. South Park was a commendable show 20 years ago.

Well, more commendable.

Not condemnable.

Oh, you know never mind. I was only looking at writing credits, but later she was a producer on it from 2007-2012.

I'm still a little hesitant to judge her based on that without knowing whether or not it was Just A Job or not because it's very much Parker and Stone's baby and they set the tone, but that's uhhh less exculpatory.

Sorry.

Her recent writing work is Girl's Trip, Trolls, and Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 though, so . . . my guess is that her work as a writer won't be similar to South Park.

If the basic idea was, "Can we get anyone who wrote for Girl's Trip on this Dazzler/Tigra show?" then I still do think it's one of the better staffing choices.

My impressions are informed by how they've chosen to promote this and if a highlighted creative voice's past works fall in line or in association with that tone, then I have reason to be wary.

I guess my impressions are informed by how hard it is for women to break into comedy. I just don't know enough about her own personal sensibilities as a writer to brush her aside so easily.

I think her post-South Park work is a potentially a decent match for the characters. It could be fun.

The blurb is very bad, though.

I just feel bummed they couldn't have turned this into an opportunity to resurrect Donald Glover's Deadpool series but I'm sure it's mired in legal shit (plus Donald probably feels burnt). In theory, any of these could be fun (hopefully Kevin Smith is just the money man and a genuinely funny/intelligent writer with something to say about modern society is put on showrunning duties on a Howard show.).

Super down for a Patton Oswalt MODOK show. If Patton somehow doesn't have time to star, reminder that John Hodgman REALLY wants to play MODOK.

BTW, for funsies, who would you like to see as showrunner for any of these shows.

I’m cautiously optimistic about the MODOK and Tigra/Dazzler series.

The rest... I am more cautious and less optimistic about.

I started watching season 5 of Agents of SHIELD.

It’s been a long time since this show was able to convincingly claim it took place in the background of the MCU films, but even so... season 5 is a bit much to swallow in that context.

Iron Man and Thor should have probably been given a heads up before things reach this level.

I don't think it's a spoiler to say that they do kind of address that complaint when the time comes to explain exactly what happened.

If you're really curious (light spoiler) the bad thing happens exactly opposite Infinity War, so everyone was a bit busy that day.
