The last several Best Pic winners have been genuinely great movies (Moonlight, Spotlight, 12 Years a Slave) or at least distinctive enough that they seem likely to be remembered (Birdman, Shape of Water).

My actual complaints with this year's nominees:

(1) lol how did beohemian rhapsody get nominated, what an embarassment

(2) Kind of sad that Roma will inevitably take best foreign film because it had more widespread distribution stateside and is nominated in so many categories, because Koreeda is great and this could have been his year. (Have not seen Shoplifters yet because . . . who has, honestly. There are not many screenings! But, I would be shocked if it's not amazing.)

I have very little opinion of the Oscars (I think the last time I actively watched them was when Return of the King won some stuff), but this thread is making me kind of glad that my breakup happened *before* we were thinking of seeing Bohemian Rhapsody, if it's really as much of a mess as everyone here is saying.

It's less the quality of the movie itself and more Bryan Singer himself.

Just . . . read the room, Oscar voters.

Oh.... oh, somehow I'd been out of the loop and completely not connected the fact that he directed that film. Welp. Retroactively glad I didn't spend money on it, though I feel bad fro Rami Malek who by all accounts is awesome.

I almost get the Bohemian Rhapsody affection, because while it is a bad movie, it is a bad movie made about some really good music and you walk out the theater not as disappointed as you should be because you just spent two hours listening to Queen.

Yes, but I could just put on some Queen music at home and save myself the drive and the ticket cost.

Good riddance! What has "cinema-too-grafy" ever done for film?

Maybe they were just embarrassed by that viral BoRhap clip, especially because... it will win. (I dunno)

Anyway, yes, stupid. Cinematography, too? Weird.

Man, I dunno, I think the editing in this scene is pretty strong.

After reading Boots Riley's evisceration of BlaKkklansman, I'd really rather not see it honored for anything.

From what I've heard and read, Roma should win BP anyways.

Also if Spiderverse does not win best animated feature we riot.

I mean, if the Academy itself is going to such lengths to devalue its own awards (and they plan to "rotate" this year after year, by the way, and they're obviously going to subject only the technical categories to it) is there really any point anymore in paying attention to the results?

The results are primarily interesting as a reflection of what The Academy thinks. If that doesn't interest you, then there was never a reason to pay attention to them.

That's a separate issue from whether or not the ceremony itself has ever been interesting or worth paying attention to, which is probably mostly a reflection of how into pageantry and musical numbers you are. It's not for me, but I get why someone might enjoy it.

For me, I'll continue to be mildly curious about the former (what movie makers think about themselves, something I can read in list form in a minute or so after it's all over), and continue to ignore the latter (the ceremony itself), so it doesn't really change how much attention I'll be paying, personally.

I have pretty much zero interest in "what The Academy thinks" because I don't really find the opinions of what a collection of ancient, bigoted, rich, white guys in LA thinks is in their industry's best self interests is really all that insightful or interesting or useful. The Academy Awards exists for the sole purpose of promoting and perpetuating Hollywood as a thing.

They’re not doing this anymore. So happy for all the filmmakers and media twitter people I follow, with whom I have one-sided parasocial friendships.
