Awesome! Where did those come from?

I'm at a complete standstill as to what to tackle next. I haven't watched Hill Street Blues in weeks, and my avatar is growling specifically in my direction. I think I need a break from Mega Man, but I loved the detail of those portraits so much.

I admit, I didn't even think of Zelda 2, but I imagine it would work for similar effect.

Pepelogoo's second form is bigger than Asha when it's in perler form!

I had some extra translucent beads, so I made a day-glo metroid

But that was just because I bought a big jug of thousands of beads and needed to separate out some black and browns to do these guys:

Because almost every later rendition, from SMB3 on through 3D versions and Paper Mario and Mario Kart, had the spines as white. But in the original SMB:

Holiday gift for my parents - Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here cover. The pattern I found online has a yellow sky instead of the original blue for some reason, but it makes for a pretty cool palette.

I came up with an idea for making double-sided perlers that you may have seen the results of in the Festivus thread, but I thought that I'd share the technique here!

The first test was an Oddish, which I neglected to get any pictures of. The first task was to find a sprite with front and back views where they were more or less the same outline. I'm not sure what game the ones I found were actually from, but they were very close to having the same outline, so it only took minor editing.

Then, I laid out both versions on pegboards and ironed as normal. For Oddish, I did an open bead. After the sides cooled, I picked the side of each one that looked the worst and laid them back to back, using masking tape to hold them together.

To connect them together, I used a woodburning pen and ran the barrel along the outside of the beads. With Oddish, the design is small enough that I only really had to make sure it connected in a couple of places around the outside, then as long as each layer is held together, the whole thing would stay there.

The problem I ran into is that my wood burning pen runs WAY too hot. If I touched it to the beads directly, they'd begin to melt like a birthday candle (and smelled about the same tbh). When I ran it along the outside of the tape, the tape began to scorch, and it kinda looked like some of the sticky material adhered to it. The best approach I found was to hold parchment paper up against a relatively straight segment, but then it would begin to scorch pretty quick anyway.

The second attempt I did was for a larger sprite to refine the idea. With Squirtle, I had to do quite a bit more redrawing to get the outlines to match. I also decided to try doing a closed-bead ironing, thinking that having flat edges would make it easier to align when melting the sides together.

Unfortunately, I didn't really review the best practices on how to iron in order to fill the gaps, so squirtle looked pretty messed up. Even with 2 layers, he's about the same thickness as a standard perler sprite.

This is where I did more experimentation with using the woodburning pen over tape, and you can see how well that worked out. To be honest, I was pretty disheartened by the results here. However, Kishi advised me about a more effective way to completely fill in the beads (iron lightly, hot, and fast), which I used for the Pidgey for my Festivus victim:

I ended up doing the open edges on the outside, but since the insides were filled, the effect is a lot less transparent than a wholly open bead like the original Oddish. I think for connecting the sides (which hasn't been done yet in this pic; You'll have to ask Lukyn for one :] ) I ended up doing the parchment paper for all the areas that are reasonably straight, then just applying the wood burning pen as lightly and carefully to sharpen up the corners where a round barrel can't really get into.

The result was very satisfying, and it was hard to part with Behind it is a coffee cup and a tin can so you can see the scale.

Here's the latest offering to the double-sided perler shrine

The pikachu sprite I wanted to use didn't fit on a 28x28 board, so I had to redraw it a little to fit and then draw the back altogether, but it wasn't too hard.

That Pikachu is adorable as heck, Lady, nice!

I attempted to make my avatar, but didn't have anywhere near the right colors for the weapon, so here is my avatar holding god knows what (certainly isn't a weapon from Final Fantasy XIV):

I connected it today. It turned out great! I tried a new method of holding parchment paper over the edges, but it was much simpler just to use the tip of my wood burning attachment (the "shader" tip, which has a flat body that comes to a pretty narrow point, just about the width of 2 bubbled out edges of a perler bead) directly with a medium low heat. I think next time I'll use a slightly higher heat, as I had to make a few passes for the edges to seal.

Other innovations and advancements were to remove the beads from the board as soon as they were connected enough, then finish the ironing on a surface that won't deform (the peg boards are bad about warping under high heat, which you need if you want to fill the holes all the way), and also to shake the board like the triangle before a game of pool so that they are all oriented the same way. I tried to take into account what direction that would be for the reverse side, but I'm not sure if I got it right.

Anyway, there's not a whole lot of point in showing another pic, since you would only be able to see one side at a time, but I think I'll play with my phone and see if I can export a video using the "virtual picture" mode on the camera.

[edit - you know what, in order to make some pretty pics, I'll show the 2-sided sprites I've been using.

Mostly I'm building off of these sprites from the games: https://www.spriters-resource.com/ds...e/sheet/34110/
but it's important that they make sense as a static image (no one foot out as in walking) and that the silhouette matches front to back. Pikachu is also a lot bigger than the other ones since it was based off the Pokemon Yellow sprite, but scaled down to fit a 28x28 board https://www.spriters-resource.com/ga...ow/sheet/8789/ ]
