Default The All Purpose Sonic the Frickin' Hedgehog Thread

We will need a thread like this considering Sega's plans on upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog games that are coming out exclusively on Nintendo systems. So here we can discuss all things Sonic old and new.

We all know Sonic's reputation suffered greatly in Sega's awkward attempts to bring him into 3D environments. Let's hope the new stuff is a vast improvement. I'll start by linking a just-released video that shows the first actual gameplay from Sonic: Lost World.

Dare I say this looks pretty good?

I don't really like the abstract look coming from Generations, and tbh I'm a bit sore-arsed about it being Wii U exclusive, since I have no interest in the console.

FWIW Sonic games sell better on Nintendo consoles. You may want to ease that knowledge into your arse, so it's not so sore.

Or a more reasonable "I am slightly aggrieved when a single game I might want is announced for the Wii U because at the moment there aren't any other games I want to buy a piece of expensive hardware for, though this is subject to change"

It was done by the same guy who was responsible for that fantastic Sonic CD port.

Yes! They are both really great. The new port features:
-widescreen
-60 fps (upscales beautifully to my TV)
-some redrawn objects
-special stages run without slowdown (it makes them harder)
-SPINDAAAAAASH
-Tails, Knuckles, Sonic + Tails mode, each with their own title screen.
-Various and sundry extras

And it's $3! Also, if you had already purchased the crummy iOS port, you get this update for free! IT'S A FESTIVUS MIRACLE

Wow, that actually sounds...really good. I don't own very many games on the iOS, but having a good 2D platformer would be nice for those boring commutes.

And I won't deny that the seperate title screens is one of the primary appeals for me, don't judge me!

There's also a 3D rendered Genesis cartridge on the start menu that you can swap between US, JP and EU versions. They even added the slot on the side when it changes to a Mega Drive cart :I

The JP cover art is aces, it looks like the opening for Saved By The Bell exploded all over a Genesis cart.

I don't want to have to beat the game first to play as Tails >:|

This awesome port fails to meet my highly specific tastes!

I'm jokey serious. I'll buy the port but feel grumpy that I won't get to play as who I want right away.

But it's rad that he's in the game at all, and that the porter apparently tweaked some of the stages in Tails and Knuckles's modes to incorporate their abilities.

I'm actually with you guys on this. Unlockable Characters is kind of bullshit.

Didn't stop me from downloading it the second I learned about it though.

Which was when I read this thread. Today.

There's also some sort of debug mode?

You have a number of ways for trying out the debug mode yourself. First start a “No Save” game and choose a character. If you have a controller plugged in you can use the traditional method of entering the cheat codes (Up, Down, Left, Right, Hold A + Start) or on the touch screen, after selecting. Otherwise, on the touch screen, tap the letters S-E-G-A in that order and listen for a ring chime. Then hold two fingers on the bottom of the touch screen. When the title screen appears, slide both fingers to the top of the screen to enter the level select.

Here you can enter the sound test for some additional cheats.

04, 01, 02, 06 – Obtain all emeralds

01, 09, 09, 01, 00, 06, 02, 03 – Debug mode.

To activate debug mode tap the GUI in the top left corner of the screen.
And I remember reading something happened if you tapped out A-G-E-S instead? But hell if I'm going to dig through a Sonic Retro thread to find it, those people are maniacs.

EDIT: oh, so you can use the debug screen to change characters. So there.

Yeah, I just figured that out. Neat!

Can't save in that mode, though :/

Every system I've ever bought myself was because of a single game (Except the NES, which was a Birthday present when I was too young to buy my own consoles, and the Wii, which I mainly bought for the VC).

SNES: Final Fantasy II(IV)
Playstation: Final Fantasy VII
Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia (though I never got around to playing it much)
PS2: Final Fantasy X
GBA: Metroid Fusion
Gamecube: Zelda Collector's Disc
DS: New Super Mario Bros.
360: BioShock

I would have bought a PS3 for The Last Guardian, but that game may never happen, so there went that.

Thanks to recommendations lately, I picked up Sonic Colors. I've played the first world and I'm not quite sold. They seem to have excised the non-Sonic parts of the games, so that's all pretty good, but there have already been tons of disorienting camera movements that make knowing exactly what direction you are supposed to be running difficult. I'll stick with it, but its starting out more tolerably good than anything really memorable.

That seems accurate from what I took away from my (admittedly limited) time with Colors. It's a pretty good game, but after ten years of awfulness, well, let's just say the bar was set pretty low by the time it came along.
