On the concert side of things, I saw DevilDriver on Friday night and got beat up in the pit (on purpose). Also have tickets to see GWAR at the start of November. It's been way too long since I got to really have fun.
I'm so stoked for the new GWAR album and show. They play here on my bday!

The new Vacivus dropped on Friday, and it's the best UK death metal album I've heard in years. (Not that I listen to much these days, being thoroughly obsessed with shitty punky black metal.) Mixed and mastered by Dan from Cruciamentum, who has done a boss job I reckon.

Reminder that the full album by Chelsea Wolfe who I mentioned earlier is out now:

Been listening to the new Vassafor a lot, too. It's reliably monstrous.

Ok. New GWAR

So for those of you who don't know, and certainly all who participated in the metal cd exchange do know, GWAR is my fave band. I like theatrics, poor taste and metal/punk/zappa like excursions.

In 2011 Corey Smoot died at 35 of a heart defect while on tour. He played Flattus Maximus for 8 years. After wards they retired the character and now the Lead Guitar Character is Pustulus.

2013 GWAR released Battle Maximus which is primarily a tribute to Corey and what he left behind. This is one of my favourite albums by GWAR and was quite touching.

A few months later in 2014 Dave Brockie (front man Oderus Urungus) passed on due to a heroin overdose at age 50. Total bummer and I just assumed the band was doomed. In the GWARBQ that year they announced former Beefcake The Mighty, Mike Bishop, would return as the new lead vocals character of Berserker Blothar. And shortly there after announced another character, Vulvatron (Kym Dylla) who would join Blothar as vocals.

Kym was fired early 2015, and Blothar has been the lead vocalist since. He is very different and listening to the classic songs as done by him is very weird. Some sound just odd, while others are improved. That said: Brockie's presence was missed. I remained hopeful that new original songs would better suit Blothar.

And they have????

The Blood Of Gods is a very weird album. Looks like main influences is 80s metal/rock. Lots of shades of AC/DC, Van Halen, Juda Priest. These are the kind of vocal stylins that Bishop is able to ape, where Brockie probably couldn't.

REVIEW

1. War On GWAR - feels very War Pigs Sabbathy. Slow and sludgy.
2. Viking Death Machine - this song gives me goosebumps. I'd say though that maybe the new lyrics person (unsure if bishop) is less rad than Brockie by a lot. Most of these are very a/b scheme, which is fine, but Brockie often more surprising and hilarious
3. El Presidente - decent song, one of the pre-release singles. Has some pointless horns in it, but nice guitaring!
4. I'll Be Your Monster - this song very very AC/DC. Love it though. The lyrics lifted from Where The Wild Things Are make me giggle
5. Auroch - OK. doesn't really ellicit strong reaction from me.
6. Swarm - this song is my MVP of the album. I usually listen to this like 6 times back to back before moving to next track.
7. The Sordid Soliloquy of Sawborg Destructo - vocals by Sawborg / Matt Maguire. I hate these like GWAR "end boss" songs, but this one is totally solid, and in the winners bracket
8. Death to Dickie Duncan - added vocals by MC Chris - on the other hand this one makes me want to puke. MC Chris' voice is what they make you listen to in hell.
9. Crush by the Cross - very capital M metal. I've heard it compared to Slayer Reign in Blood. I sort of hate Slayer, so. eh
10. Fuck This Place - awesome song, and first single. Let me know not to panic.
11. Phantom Limb - ballad style song to memory of Oderus. EMOTIONAL. HOLD ME
12. If You Want Blood - AC/DC cover. It's good!

TOTAL REVIEW:
GWAR will be ok, and hopefully they can survive loss of Derks (Balsac) as well.
8/10

Recently went on a quest to find a great doom metal album I had never heard and I found this really incredible thing:

Memento Mori by Sahg

I somehow missed Sahg in all my previous doom metal explorations and I am kind of angry at myself for it. They kinda have everything I look for in the style.

Chambre Froide's Rouges Chapelles was the BM album of 2017, IMO.

Listened to Megadeth's Endgame [2009] the other day and was pleasantly surprised to find it was a solid album. As someone who assumed that Megadeth's quality had steadily declined since 1990 it was a bit of surprise that Dave Mustaine and Megadeth could make quality records a quarter century down the line. But I'm also in the very small minority that strongly prefer Megadeth over Metallica so let that stand as a testament to my uncommon viewpoint.

Thanks for the rec - just bought it on Bandcamp! I love Iron Bonehead. Almost their entire stable is comprised of top-notch filthmongers.

Do you like metal? Do you like dogs? Buy my new single released under Blütfürz to commemorate a friend's dog that died. The skrill will go to a local animal shelter. Also it's not a bad tune!

If I had been paying attention on November 3rd of 2017, I would have been freaking out, because both Converge and Cannibal Corpse released their latest albums on that day. Instead I'm about 4 months late to the party.

Oh well! New material from Converge and Cannibal Corpse! Yeah!! "Red Before Black" may be a contender. Thrashy and chunky, it had me headbanging and air guitaring. Spinning "The Dusk in Us" now...I feel like this one has a lot to unpack. I have no regrets making these purchases.
